There needs to be more discussion on how hard it is to launch and stay afloat. IMO, it's too easy to sell start up owners packages that fit mid size to large company ideas preached in biz schools. Also, who wants to read a book or get consulted on how your company is going to crash and burn because your spending too much on the crap they want to sell you on how to run a mid size? Finally, try to get a loan without the stuff your warning about. It has to be saturated in the business plan.
Oh yeah, on the logo...I freaking hate this new trend of making websites using Gothic Greek letter crap. If it pains me to read, I move on. Just an analogy to your keep your start up neat and simple comment.
Newish, Here's the reality. Make second rate product, hype them, become a pump and dump IPO ie the car companies, The only thing that matters is the stock holders and getting my huge bonus. Lay off everybody I've got mine the stock holders have thiers and fuck the little guy. The world you described is long gone.
Given your previous yt videos, I wouldn't expect you reincarnate into the role of an enthusiastic business coach. But if your coaching is a good product, its price is cheap and you find your way to new customers, why not try it. Good luck, anyway.
Though, I do find your original set of statements running in opposition to what the government has been doing (both sides) with their legislation for the past couple of decades... and currently the health care bills.
"Why did you even bring politics into this?" Well, putting aside that Newsish has, in the past, been on the cutting edge of political views/humor and that Bri and I had a major discussion about Health Care and Medicare a while back, the branding problem was a major part of President Obama's campaign, and a part of Congress and McCain's as well.
A little over a year we still see business as usual in DC. And looking back decades, politics has always been the most obvious of hyped branding.
I certainly agree with what you are saying. I've been building a company slowly, trying to make a profit through product and customer service rather than branding. I've made error, but I don't spend money to fix these, I fix them myself (including a refinement of the website and look of the graphics). And my day job is realizing the same thing, moving to offer something the market doesn't have, among the sea of copies and clones.
Not necessarily make the product cheaper, but make your product more affordable. China made toys with lead for a time, but that was frowned upon for health dangers. So, now they make them with cadmium. A material that's just as toxic. Why? Because it's cheaper that way. Lead poisoning or carcinogen exposure to children? Irrelevant.
Tech firms want to be first in their category to get public recognition. I think they use cobranding to get a faster channel to target markets. Being well-known also gives them good feedback for product improvement.
i already knew what u where talking about i am starting up my own business but my computer is giving me problems so i have to switch computers if i am going to finish doing what i am doing and i think this upload is completely ha bisky for the people who dont understand about businesses and who might think about starting their own
"People should be forced to buy products whether they like them or not, whether they're any good or not."
I recognize the sarcasm but isn't this what the government did with the stimulus.
Well... instead of forcing Americans to buy American goods and services, the government took taxes (money) from Americans, bought American goods and services, then distributed them back to Americans...
so yea... they basically forced us to buy shit we don't necessarily want/need.
"Site an example please." Of the gov't taking the money or of gov't spending the money poorly?
I'm certain if you look you can see taxes and spending bills, so there's your taking money (not to mention taxes on banks who paid back their loans, to cover banks that won't payback TARP).
As for spending, I know a multi-million dollar outhouse and a turtle bridge I can sell you, both unused.
Just wondering what goods and services were distributed back to us. To the banks, yes. Regular Americans, no. That was all. Not trying to start something.
I think Five Guys is a perfect example of what you talk about in terms of success. Despite the market being flooded with cheaper priced options, despite the super-trend being healthier options, they took a burger joint with fried everything and massive proportions to a booming franchise.
I would have to disagree with your concept of branding. Take your example, Google, the simplicity of their homepage WAS their brand. Take Coca Cola, the distinctive text type was and continues to be, their brand. I agree that branding should not be goal one, but it should be close.
I see what you mean, but I would actually call Google's minimalism "product design" rather than "branding." Product design definitely should be a huge focus for start ups and for internet start ups, product design = web design.
I actually cut out a bit about Coke's bottle design. I lauded their decision to change their 2-liter bottles to the skirt design as it successfully increased sales 2%. That's a great example of a company with an already successful product using branding to increase sales
Interesting, how do you distinguish "product design" from "Brand" in a situation like Google where they are so interrelated? Was the product designed as a brand? Unlike Coke, where their product design became their brand. Oh, before I forget, great to see you back on the tube!
@vedlatigid You can definitely design your product to follow a brand, but you can also create a brand out of your product design (as Google has done). When Brin and Page first created that homepage, I don't think they intended that it would be the first in a network of products (or a company) characterized by their white, textual, minimalist design. Most importantly they didn't spend $100K to hire some one to tell them to do that or spend hours debating. They simple said, "this works" and did it
yep. you are totally correct. plus they tend to be spoiled morons with a silver tongue and a golden throat that can get those loans that should have gone your way. this is where the banks did the dot coms et al a disservice, falling for the glitz, and not the grits. now its next to impossible to get a start up loan. of course, i would loan you anything, i believe everything you say and love it when you say it. how much do you want????
your channel is not avalible you tube tells me :/

Very true. We have a legislative branch in brand only.

Gov and business are different and would require a different video.
So I dont see what his statements in any part have to do with government.

This guy's basic idea is, when your product doesn't sell as well as you thought, consider things you might change.
WTF??
Like 8 year old kids selling Kool-aide don't fucking know that.
If you need this guy's advice, if you are so stupid you don't already question how you can improve your product or sales, your are doomed.
ItchMyFoot 2 years ago
All my advice in all my videos is obvious to eight-year-olds, yet sadly their forty-year-old counterparts never seem to share their wisdom.
Newsish 2 years ago
and yet that is the majority of businesses.
In fact, 90% of business fails. Not all for this reason, but many are very stupid as thats human nature.
Why do you think so many of us dont trust capitalism.
Businesses are no better then government, but at least we can exert some control over government.

People should be FORCED to buy products whether they like them or not, whether they're any good or not.
