man. both the rockets and blazers made a mistake here. the rockets got ralph sampson, and they chose another center. they should've chose jordan. imagine what it would look like if a prime sampson plays along a young mj.
@pinoypogi1983 The Rockets drafted Hakeem (then simply Akeem) Olajuwon that season. The history of the NBA up to that point said the smart pick is the big man, and Houston was rewarded with a Hall of Famer. It's hard to say that Houston made a "mistake," even if Jordan turned out to be better.
On the other hand, Sam Bowie was a mistake, no doubt about it.
@mrmacross I agree on that 1 Akeem was Amazing player amazing one of the greatest of all time. Always Remeber the 1995 Playoffs Robinson vs Olajuwon then you know what i mean. Sam Bowie WTF Blazers have always been in a Nightmare when it comes to NBA draft here are some Names Larue Martin 1971 NIGHTMARE 1974 Bill Walton Fantastic player and he showed us what he could do on the court hisi njury got Portland a nightmare.. 1984 You know what i mean. 2008 Greg Oden.. Blazermania are completely Dead
Imagine what would have happened if Portland would've chose him instead of Bowie. This draft was Portland's biggest blunder. Not really the Rockets cause they got Olaguwon, but Portland, oh they messed up.
when you see stars like kobe, michael, wade, etc. you think how are they not first pick? ok iverson was drafted the same year as kobe so one of them had to be first but kobe was 13th so who knows i guess
I kind of like this draft. Low key... No hoopla, 18 year olds dressed in expensive suits, making more money than I'll probably ever make who haven't proven anything yet. The league is getting watered down with these 1 and done college players who get drafted in the lottery and average 8 points and 4 rebounds for their career.
@saintssupernova14 I may need to argue with you on one of the two teams not selecting Michael Jordan, I mean Houston did select Hakeem Olajuwon which although Houston only got two titles out of it they still got more than what Portland got in Sam Bowie, then again I kind of see where you went with this
Who were the 2 moron teams who didn't pick him? I'd make sure whoever made those decisions never worked another day in the NBA for the rest off their pathetic lives. Same with those idiot hornets trading Kobe
@filahohi well the blazers drafted sam bowie with number 2 so that was insanely stupid, but the rockets took olajuwan with the number 1 so that wasnt that bad, im sure if they could have a do over theyd take jordan, but it wasnt a bad pick at all
@filahohi rockets had first pick and drafted hakeem olajuwan. so you cant say that was a bad pick. the trail blazers had the 2nd pick and drafted sam bowie which turned out to be a dumb pick
@BoomBoomPowDatBitch For some reason I think they did you heard him say teams were trying to buy that pick and Jordan, I bet teams were offering anyone one the roster and draft picks to the Bulls, but for them to say no they knew what was going to happen.
It was a rumor that the Rockets had a chance to get #1 and #2 picks by trading Samson to Blazers. They would probably have used it on Jordan even though they were stacked with guards. I think Drexler might have been in that deal, but I'm not sure of that.
Could just be a myth, but that would be one hell of a lineup. Jordan, Hakeem and Drexler would make the Miami big 3 look like high school players.
Houston picked Hakim Olajuwon at number 1 and Portland picked Sam Bowie at 2. The mentality of the 80s was that "Big men win championships." Paid off for the Rockets in 94 & 95. Portland didn't pick MJ because their shooting guard spot was already filled by Clyde Drexler. This was Chicago's chance for vengeance as they lost the rights to the number one pick in 79 to the Lakers who picked Magic Johnson.
The Blazers failed then and when they got Greg Oden in 2007. Durant is all ready better than Oden will ever be. Yet Durant still has a lot of potential that will be evident in the next couple years. I feel bad for Blazer fans because they can never seem to get the draft right...
@DonRonter oh yah he was a bust all right he just one six titles everytime he was in the finals and became the best player everywhere. But thats not good enoguh for you.
Blazers took Drexler the year before this draft. That's why the drafted Bowie. They already had a star guard. Lets remember that Clyde the Glyde was no slouch. He is a hall of Famer. Houston took Olajuwon with the first pick and Bowie was highly talked about when he came out of college so portland went with need. I just looks worst now because what Jordan has become. who would have known he would become the greatest of all time!! i wonder if head gone to any other team, would he had done the same thing? would he have won 6 championships?
it's almost a FACT that Jordan would have been great on any team. If Jordan went to say...the Dallas mavs of the 80s he would probably "only" have 1 or 2 rings. maybe just 1. but he would have been a great player regardless
I personally think Hakeem Olajuwon was a great first overall pick b/c u knew wat u were getting drafting him. MJ was a draft steal b/c nobody expected him to be as great as he was. MJ was one of those guys that played better in the NBA than he did in college. Still 6 championships nobody else in that draft class accomplished that.
in that spot. You had to pick the dream. Of course if houston could have seen what they would have got, they would have picked MJ. Sometimes its better to not have that 1st pick still
The first one was pretty happy since they got one of the greatest centers in history in Hakeem Olajuwon. The next one is still kicking themselves for not picking MJ, John Stockton, Charles Barkley, even Otis Thorpe.
What a horrible pick that was. It's not like he's going to win six NBA championships and go down as one (if not THE) greatest professional basketball player of all-time.
Kobe was 199 pounds and they said he was undersized coming out of high school and MJ was 195 pounds out of college. Both amazing players and so to be honest very excited to be alive to watch both of them play.
Kobe was undersized height wise not weight. Kobe was only 6'4" coming out of high school and I doubt he was 199. He currently weighs 205 and he was way skinnier back then and 4 inches shorter. He's definatley gained more then 6 pounds.

Sam Bowie was the bad pick at #2- almost as bad as when the Pacers decided to pass on the top Indiana collegiate player Larry Bird for Rick Robey....

The two best Centers in the draft were taken and the Bulls were pretty much left to take the best Collegiate player in the country. Carl Lewis was taken in the 10th round by the Bulls but never played.

A lot of those boos were coz Chicago were looking for a Center. Back then Bulls already had what they viewed as being competent athletic guards. The two best Centers in the draft were taken and the Bulls were pretty much left to take the best Collegiate player in the country. Back then, the common consensus among coaches was, you built a championship team around a good/dominant Center. Just another challenge to Jordan. Carl Lewis was taken in the 10th round by the Bulls but never played.
