Frenchy - I know plenty about GWS. If you look closely, there is water running out its mouth, not the gills - that's bad. GWS have been transported in tanks, and so have killer whales, so why they can't have some sort of harness or restraining device IN THE WATER is beyond me - I think they pull them out for the camera. Without DNA, you will not be able to compare how this species compares to other similar or disimilar species. maybe further along the line is the possibility of cloning. also, other tagging methods are rudimentary and not designed to last 6 years. National Geographics and affiliates do nothing but good to bring awareness to the plight of animals.

Frenchy - I know plenty about GWS. If you look closely, there is water running out its mouth, not the gills - that's bad. GWS have been transported in tanks, and so have killer whales, so why they can't have some sort of harness or restraining device IN THE WATER is beyond me - I think they pull them out for the camera. Sorry, but hooking and fighting a 3000lb shark and setting it on a hard deck for 20 min can't be good for it.

Well if they had them restrained in the water, it would be difficult to make sure there was enough water flow for him to breath, since they need constant movement. But yeah, its got to be horrible for that heavy dude to just lay on that hard deck, they aren't designed to withstand their own weight crushing down on them.

I watched this show on discovery channel and it was friggin amazing to see these monsters so close up. They had two huge females up on the cradle and i mean these things are enormous. I love sharks in general and they were as humane as possible in treating them. I dont see how they could have applied that transmitor without taking the fish outta the water so to speak. Good show.

Well, if it's impossible, I don't think they should be doing this. On such a high-tech ship, it shuld be possible to have some kind of harness or tank to contain the shark - the burden is on these clowns.
Did you see the water pouring out of its mouth? That was water that should have been running through its gills.
Allowing a hook and line capture of a protected GWS and then plopping it down on the deck of a boat for 20 minutes is scandalous.
This is a publicity stunt, that's all.

u r really blind and uneducated on the matter of great whites. the water runs through its mouth and exits the gills. thats the only way it gets oxygen and also y sharks cant swim backwards if u think about it. also this is not a publicity stunt. great white sharks are the most mysterious and unknown creatures on the earth today despite however much info u find in a library or website. also a great white shark cant live in a tank. they always die. and its to heavy for them to lift it by harness.

Why do they have to hook the shark and drag it out of the water? Because it looks cooler for the camera - that's why. This is a ridiculous tagging method. Why can't they keep the shark in a harness in the water so its weight won't crush its organs or any pups if it's a pregnant female.
I think great whites sharks are awesome creatures that need to be protected and studied, but this TV show, featuring handsome movie star Paul Walker, is nothing but a publicity stunt masquerading as science.

If you do not bring the fish out of water, how will you get a blood sample? Without a blood sample, you will not be able to sequence the shark's DNA. Without DNA, you will not be able to compare how this species compares to other similar or disimilar species. maybe further along the line is the possibility of cloning. also, other tagging methods are rudimentary and not designed to last 6 years. National Geographics and affiliates do nothing but good to bring awareness to the plight of animals.

Sharks should be left alone - this relates to fishing them for sport, food, or out of fear. Not for research that helps them. And leaving sharks alone is not enough. The things we do to the ocean (directly and indirectly) are harming most life.

However, we've been tagging sharks with methods that have less potential for harm to the animal for a long time now. I really couldn't be more heated about this and I hope there is a huge backlash against them from the public and academic community. After years of shark week and other shows of grandeur deifying them, I have to say this show was appaling. An absolute sellout by NG, this was completely made for t.v and a tragic example of how quickly we are able to digress. This expedition was led by a redneck fisherman, a carpenter, and a D-rated actor. They basically took a concept from JAWS to wear out a palagic fish and THEN, expect a 4000 lb creature that lives in a world of antigravity to thrive on a hardwood floor...for 20 min, w/o H20
