Finland lost 70,461 men (KIA, WIA, POW). As for the Soviet Union, 87,506 men were KIA and died at the early stage of evacuation, 16,292 died of wounds and disease. One must note that most of the Soviet casualties in the Winter War were inflicted by DISEASE and POOR SANITATION, so they should NOT be attributed to the Finns. As for the military failures of the Red Army, this war was a disaster because it was ill-prepared, not because Finland was such a hard nut to crack.

Finland lost 70,461 men (KIA, WIA, POW). As for the Soviet Union, 87,506 men were KIA and died at the early stage of evacuation, 16,292 died of wounds and disease. One must note that most of the Soviet casualties in the Winter War were inflicted by DISEASE and POOR SANITATION, so they should NOT be attributed to the Finns. As for the military failures of the Red Army, this war was a disaster because it was ill-prepared, not because Finland was such a hard nut to crack.

Instead i would like you to note that NEVER trust anything told by the different leaders of the Soviet Union. Finland was a mere "incident" compared to the scale of the eastern front (not to mention the pacific one too!) and not very much was known of ww2 even if millions of Soviets had experienced it. And the investigation into ww2 has only more recently become "reliable". It would not amaze me if he had never heard of the Finnish front. After all, he had the cold war to think about.

When 25% (450 first, and 750 000 next) of the forces of the standing army is involved, it surely is more than a mere "incident". Also, SU was waging no other war at the time; so, impact of 1/2 million killed and wounded in the Winter War was no small matter.
Khrushchev knew alright. When intewieved, he tells of how Stalin was fuming because of the slow progress of the winter war.

Which all proves that he was very close to the "action" during the Winter War. Also, being a liaison officer between Stalin and his generals, he had all the information available to him about the progress of the war, troop strengths, casualties, requests (men & equipments), etc. By the virtue of his position, he KNEW the goings-on.
