Is there any difference between this and pisao?

they r both side kicks. its just the entrance thats different. also u can strike with the heel, the knife edge (side) of the foot or the entire bottom from heel to ball.

i just started capoeira and i'm having a hard time distinguishing between a martelo and a chapa. can someone help? what is the difference?

the striking surface is different, watch his foot. This looks cooler on tape.

with martelo you hit, with chapa you push ;)

And with martelo you should come in from the side... chapa comes from down to straight push as metalchrist said :)
