  • One of the defining scenes of the series and I agree with one of the top comments about Bodie's arc. After seeing the show, you watch scenes like this again and they have even more depth.

  • Its the same sixty-four-squ@res on either board. The Qu33n can't move like a Knight does...

an She can't dance with the King on a Castle. And Pawns can do the "Speci@L-P" word maneuver...and when one becomes Queen,

    its always more apprieciated...

then that Bitch U married to your left.

The games simple, but there r sum rUles.

  • who shot snot

  • what about Them bald headed bitches over there

    (sigh)

  • The tragedy is, all the characters in this scene die.

  • Why did "The Wire" have such a shitty opening?

  • ~Bodie~ "What about them lil bold head bitches right there"

  • @getitup11 HAHA! I just burst out laughin at the comment that bodie dropped!

  • For some reason this scene seems 100x more profound being on a show like this than if I were just chillin next to them in real life lol

  • better not be off duty in uh gay bar...

  • better not be black and live in the US.

  • what about them lil bald headed bitches LOL

  • its crazy everybody in this scene died before the 5th season

  • Baltimore's ragitty Police Dept. resembles the Pleasanton, CA Police Dept.

    Lotta illegal activity there...

  • Pretty much a metaphor of the american dream.. Let's you believe that you can get to be the queen by getting to the other end.. But really you will most probably stay a pawn and die for the king..

  • a bit cliched, no?...chess as a metaphor for life...not very original

  • @pem82sox It's a little bit overdone alright, a rare moment of melodrama in what is a steadfastly gritty show. I guess the justification is that it's not really metaphor for life, it's more of a commentary on 'the game' so to speak. It's laying out how we dance like puppets within institutions. All of us, whether we realise it or not.

  • Very Underrated show. Amazing writing

  • BEST SCENE IN TV HISTORY

  • "Yeah you-com'in-up-in-the world... Long as you ain't F@LL in wit' the

    trash 'dey tak'in out..."-Bodie

  • "Unless they some smart ass pawns" - But Bodie, you weren't smart enough to make it to the end.

  • its insane how all of these characters develop, in the short span they get, i feel like i learned more about who they are than any time given to characters on other shows

  • i miiss tht show

  • Ya studder'in Pric ya!... Bodie was he shak'in??... I don't know about you

sometimes Wallace!...You may fold under questioning.-Pirated Goodfellas Quote

  • Yeah this is the most important TV ever made, David Simon even admitted that he made a way bigger impact with this than with his journalism. TELLING people how things are doesn't necessarily accomplish much, because you can be dismissed as an ideologue. But SHOWING the way things are, no one can deny it.

  • Learn la lifetime from this.

  • the wire>>>>the sopranos>>>>the rest

  • i should probably try to watch this show again. i got like four episodes into it and got bored. this scene is great though.

  • @kingkhan2894 Greatest show of all time. Doesnt get the credit it deserves. Definitely give it another shot!

  • @kingkhan2894

Definitely should give it another try. I watched it for the first time at a young age, 15, couldn't keep up with it to e honest, which made it SEEM boring. I'm 20 now, and just watched all 5 seasons in a month. It's brilliant writing filming everything. I love love love it, and wish that I didn't finish it so fast!! : (

  • In the end, the pawn 'and' the King

go in the same box... dumb-dumbs. -thecalistallion

  • BEST Tv show that has ever been showing in the TV

  • This is just a flat out great scene!! Ghetto Philosophy 101

  • @bchen0709 ye sad little blirt snap out of it, go fuck ye sister ye inbred

  • @steviewb4 The fuck is wrong with you? The Sopranos, maybe....but Dexter and The Shield? Go fuck yourself

  • @steviewb4 'The Shield' better than The Wire. Lol get a life son

  • yeah stringer is a bitch for sure

  • damn. Some drug dealers are really smart

  • .snwap ssa-trams emos yed' sel''les 'dey some smart-ass pawns.

  • Dead people talking here.. The game is the game

  • Yeah you come'in up in the World.......long as you ain't fall in wit' da trash dey tak'in out. -Bodie

  • Oh shoot I'm watching The Wire now, but I don't see Snoop now on T.V.

  • You know I just starting watching this the last month or two on the 101 network(I think thats what its called). They are playing the first season. I just saw the episode where Wallace was killed(what a sad scene). All I can say is damn. What the hell did miss all those years. I think its probably better than the sopranos was. But want to know something. Breaking bad is better than them all. Granted I've just begun to watch wired(I hope they continue to the next season on the 101 network)

  • Watching this part again makes me realize how fucking awesome Bodies character arc was.

  • trop ford bodie tu es le plus sympas avec angelo

  • "...unless they be some smart ass pawns."

    Bodie never did make it..

  • deep yo

  • Watch Thiz DVD search on youtube

  • Absolutely brilliant screenwriting. Love it!

  • this one scene simplified chess for me.

  • chess is like fucking life

  • 665re76t

  • god damn, this scene is so graciously epic.

best tv series i ever saw.

  • this scene really got me hooked

  • Would the Knight be wee-bay?

  • Stickum Bird, Dangelo an them niggas be the bishop, weebey the knight, and them lil bald head bitches as Bodie put it of course is Wallace, Poot, and all them lil niggas

  • @MachineGunMouth amen thats a great answer man

  • fuck fuckity fuck fuck fuck...fuuuuck...shh fuck...fuuuuckkkk...fuck..aww...fuck fuck

  • Best TV show ever made. And I mean that.

  • wht channel is it on?

  • @KaliberKing

    better then friends?

  • @KaliberKing It's your opinion. Why would you express it if you didn't mean it? Go watch The Sopranos, then read a book. You inarticulate idiot.

  • @jackwardjw

I think you'll find I articulated myself perfectly. By adding "And I mean that", I was simply seeking to differentiate my comment from those people who say "this is the best TV show ever", but do not in fact mean that. What they are doing is using the phrase "best TV show ever" to portray how much they love a programme, even if they do not actually consider the programme to be the best show ever to grace our screens.

I however MEAN that it IS the best TV show ever made. Cunt.

  • @KaliberKing I agree

  • @KaliberKing go and watch breaking bad and u the wire is ure number 2 (;

  • @FUCKTHAPOLIZE breaking bad is sick, still prefer the wire though, its deeper and grittier

  • @jimoen0009 i love breaking bad and the wire ! Breaking Bad The Wire Lost thats my top 3

  • Comment removed

  • Ladies and Gentleman, 801332 is rewarded the recognition of posting most retarded comment ever.

Stop playing yourself. We all know Arlington, VA is nothing but suburbs and wealthy cities there.

  • ahha, you fart in the mouths of gay dudes? Sounds kinda gay to me! lol

  • LOL yea right the pawns are the little bald headed bitches

  • the little bald headed bitches....lol

  • arguably the greatest scene of the series

  • ner, of all time

  • I think the scene with Jimmy and Bunk going through a crime scene in series 1 only using the word 'fuck' tops it

  • This scene is epic beyond words. I mean that is the complete storyline of the hard life in Baltimore in THE WIRE

  • this is one of the best and strongest scene's in the show .

  • I like how he explain the game of chess in street terms. where bodie and wallace could understand it. Bodie was the smartest pawn in the Avon's crew. look at his expression around 5:07.

  • You can't forget Poot. He's the only guy from season one to survive/not get arrested. And he's been through ALLOT of shit.

  • he was arrested and went to jail

  • He got out of jail though.

Sorry for the spoiler but seriously, this show started back in 2002. I assumed that every fan would have seen it already. Most of the characters already meet their fates before Season 5 started anyway.

  • thanks for the spoiler.

  • yeah u should be on youtube watchin videos, cuz no matter what some one going to spoil it 4 u...sorry i know how u feel

  • These guys were like the Greek Chorus of the Wire for the first couple seasons...Falstaff and his fellows.....RIP The WIRE

  • i watched this clip like one of the first days of me at my university while i still lived in the dorms, its been like 3 years already, fucking crazy

  • o cool!

  • oh wow sick...best show on tv

  • Chess game=metaphor.

"The king stay the king"=the rich stay rich, the elite stay elite.

Pawn= in a chess game hardly do the pawns survive and very few actually make it to the other end. This shows how very few people living in the struggle actually succeed in life.

This is capitalism, a society of competition.

    What are your interpretations?

  • King=Executives, Top Management. May

have built it from ground up or inherited it but knows little about how it works from this vantage point.

    Queen=Middle Management, makes the

workers work but does not get hands dirty in the day to day.

Pawns=Workers, 9-5'ers, day laborers. They know how to WORK the business but can't ever get the money/power to actually own the business. They compete for middle mgt positions.

Castle=Business, Industry, Enterprise, set up to serve only itself.

  • word

  • So, I guess Bubbles is now a Prince (aka Queen), now since he shook his habit. He's really the ONLY success story of the entire Wire that did it on true committment.

  • realise somethin yo dey all dead

  • ohh shit!

  • best tv show i have ever watched

  • You damn right it is!!!

  • HBO wheres to watch it at.. omar little u from ireland?

  • Great show...

  • my estate looks like the low rises

  • the wire is AMAZING

  • Bmore representing!

  • The Wire is pure GOLD.

  • this might be the most telling scene in the entire series...

this or the omar robberies : )

  • BBC are finally showing the wire starting with the 1st episode at 11:20 tonight 30/03/09. Why are they so late with it? And why hasnt there been a proper advertising campaign? just a stupid 5 seconds teaser advert. Really stupid, channel 4 would of done a better job like they did with sopranos. Anyway ive seen all of the wire, just thought id give the heads up.

  • yeah but at least theres no commercials on BBC to fuck up the flow.. seen it all myself to, but somehow found myself watchin it again when i should b sleeping!

  • nah I prefer it on the BBC ain't no advert breaks, but yeah they should done a better job with the advertising. I'm new to it, and...it's the best show I've ever seen by a country mile, leagues ahead of anything we Brits have done

  • you dont no shit

  • All 5 seasons of The wire is on BBC nxt wed 11.20pm Finally the greatest drama on tv along wiv Sopranos will be getting the respect it deserves (like the Sopranos)

  • people just chill and watch

  • Stop talking about what you know nothing about.

  • this bitch made light skinned dude from the wire came to buy some shit at the store where I work at...when I recognized who he was I was all friendly and shit but this dude was acting like a dickhead in return..fuckin trick!!

  • why yall giving my man a thumbs down on this? if he was friendly and got an attitude in return i understand his feelings. I feel ya capone. if he was acting like u say he was then he is a trick. he probably letting his tv role go to his head and think he tough 4 real. lmao hopefully, for his sake, he stays outta the wrong areas with that.

  • Where's Wallace??

  • im deathly afraid of niggers... the mean looking ones not the nice ones >_>

  • if you from baltimore mutha fukkin city like me you know this shit still dont hold a cigar to the real thing... you wanna show? come through Poplar Grove, Edmondson Ave. Latrobe Projects, Greenmount... bytch we gotta show 4 ya as.. lol

  • greatest show ever

  • The Wire is as close as you are going to come to the real sh*t. What are they going to do show brothers with duct taped heads and five to the dome? Or youngins' runnin' up in a funeral, pullin' the body out the casket, shootin' it up and escapin' in a police car. That's real DC sh*t. What white producer in his right mind is going to go there? It's about entertainment and the real sh*t ain't a movie, it's life and death.

  • what the fuck are you saying?

  • You've got folks complaining about "The Wire" being real. The point is how real does the show need to be. The two examples I listed actually happened in DC years ago. I don't think producers of shows like the Wire need to portray these types of situations for the show to be "real." From the episodes that I have watched it's real enough. How much more sadistic does Chris have to be? I think the show gave a good account of the streets in Baltimore from what I've read, heard and seen.

  • I respect that. i originally asked the question for one reason only. where im from it aint real. i dont know how things are in DC or Baltimore. Someone argued to me it was as real as it gets. i found that hard to believe. when i was "hustlin" we focused to much on getting our money and tried like hell keep any other attentions from us. walking around shootin people for the hell of it was not somthin we did. dont get me wrong, there were times folks had beef but silly stuff was avoided.

  • Back in the day (late 1970s) it was all about keeping a low profile and handling your business. Now everyone wants to be "Scarface." Believe me the old heads aren't down with the youngins or the violence. About 15 years ago a youngin; killed a guy comingg around a corner right after the New Year just so he could say that he was the first person to kill someone that year. I know it sounds sick, but some of these youngins aren't right in the head or the heart. Peace.

  • good points. Although late 70's i was still in pampers, i didnt think of how time changes.around 90-91 when i was first really introduced to the previous hell i thought was living. at 16 i was robbed and shot3 times with a 12 gauge(i was running so i didnt get a full blast, although the first one almost took my right arm off). even through that things werent as bad as the show depicts. At least not then, where im from. but you are right. times do change and i wasnt taking that into consideration

  • Well young brother looks like you made it through the fire. I am feeling a little old now with your pampers reference, but it's cool. I hope that you have found peace now and will have it for the rest of your life. Take Care.

  • No one is shooting for no reason...

All deaths are calculated and serve a purpose.

At no point does someone get shot just because...

There are such things as gang wars and at face value they may seem like senseless killings, but there's thought and strategy behind it (not saying its good).

This show is as real as it gets. When other TV shows focus on fart-jokes or a crime that is miraculously solved in a day, this show dedicates an entire season to the intricacies of one case.

  • Are u serious? "Calculated"? u telling me that uneducated thugs who usually dont know what the world looks like beyond their city are doing math on who needs to live and why? u pulling my leg right? I know u cant honestly believe that. imo (and I admit I never been in a gang ) gang wars is 98% of were A's and your B's so we shooting <--"just because". yall shot pookie so we shot gmoney. We shot gmoney so yall shot at us and hit t-dogs girl. T dogs pissed so now we on hunt ect.

  • Yes and when you think about it each one of those deaths serves a purpose. To show that the gang isn't scared. To gain territory. To send a message. It's not like one day a dude wakes up and has the sudden urge to shoot someone. It's about cold-blooded revenge or the thirst for power.

It is calculated. And...that doesn't have anything to do with math, wtf are you talking about? The word has more than one meaning.

They're not geniuses, but they still do things for a reason.

  • All calculations are math my friend. math isnt just 2+2 or 3x3. maybe youd understand it better if we say 5b + ak47(5)+9mm(2)=5a+(-5a)+5b ..(guns got ditched) 8)

  • Calculate:

    2. to determine by reasoning, common sense, or practical experience; estimate; evaluate; gauge.

  • You owned him.

  • amazing show

  • yeah it is a good show but it is kind simple in the game i mean alot of shit HAPPenz but this is some kinda fake things.

  • I think it was written or at least co-written by someone who used to be a Baltimore cop in the Narcotics department, so I guess he must know what he's talking about. Sure, they'll add some stuff in to make it more entertaining, but I reckon it's about the most realistic show of it's genre on TV.

  • nobody thats actually in the game or has been gets on youtube to share their feelings get out of here with this

  • If what you say is true then that means you've never been in the game cause if you had then you wouldn't have replied right? well since you never been in the game then how the f@#$ you know what someone who was would do?? Always someone ignorant coming to the table with useless BS.

  • that makes sense. if ur dealing and stuff like like that, then u got bigger shit to worry about than socializing with other dudes on youtube.

  • read up chicko. this was a life i knew years ago. i am a proud and great father and husband now. catch up on the times

  • thats just my opinion. and i could be wrong. thats all im saying

  • obviously you didnt read up like i requested. i'll help you this time but youll have to search for yourself afterwards. previously i mentioned that this is my past so im obviously not on a corner selling drugs and acting ignorant right now. this means i DO have time to play with you tube.

  • u think ur all that don't u?

  • ......

  • For those who love the wire and are getting offened be cool. it aint personal. if this is how you get your street education thats fine by me. i was having a discussion with someone i know lived a sheltered life and they told me this sh@^ is real. Where im from its fake az hell but it may be like that in baltimore. so im asking those who would KNOW what they think. and if you saw it all happen through the grapevine or out the window then you realy cant answer. Nothing wrong with a sheltered life.

  • A lot of this show is based on real people and real events. David Simon was a police reporter for the Baltimore Sun for many years. Ed Burns was a homicide detective for many years. Aside from the fact that its a television show and there are certain contrivances needed to tell a compelling story, what exactly about the show is "unreal"?

  • question for you, cuz i was reading theses comments.... where are YOU from ? (where this shit is "fake"..... like do u mean the sub-urbs? or country or something?...just curious

  • if you look a lil futher up you will see that i am from Atlanta,GA.. (bankhead courts). we dont consider that the "sub-urbs".

  • now i aint sayin where u at is "da hood" or aint... but what im tryin to get at is that "THE WIRE" is very realistic... that shit do be goin down.. n not JUST in B-more.. people be gettin killed over drugs everyday... aint nobody in "the wire" walkin around killin people for "no reason"....

  • yall juss pussy over there

  • "juss" its just. we pu&&y cause we arent completely ignorant and kill each other for fun?? man i didnt realize so many dummies exist. "yall" coming out now though.

  • best season has to be 4

  • the scene that made me stop and realise The Wire was different to any of the thin gruel passed of TV shows these.

  • People don't want to think these days when it comes to Televison. They want to be entertained. That's why shows like CSI are so popular. Simple shows for simple minds.

  • do you think ther will be another show like the wire i starting watching it in 2002 till 2008 lol i had 2 get all dvds for it im not buying season-5 dat one suck lol

  • just watched the first series, jesus hbo have some unreal shows.havent started the second series, can someone tell me,WITHOUT SPOILING FUTURE EPISODES, is the rest of the show still about the towers an barksdale an all that or do they move onto different criminals?

  • same criminals but more focus on a new bunch, more focus on the docklands in series 2

  • Season 2 is the Barksdales and also Shipping Docks and stuff like that (Irish families who work on the docs)

Season 3 is the Barksdales and Marlo Stanfield

Season 4 is Stanfield and the Public School system

Season 5 is Stanfield, Homeless, and Newspapers

  • cheers for that, near the end of season four now, such an addictive show

  • Best scene ever on the show...that was sum real knowledge being spoke

  • is there some where i can but the series?

  • you can but the seasons at best buy probaly find them online to

  • but?

  • I seen dat haha ima but dem series!!

  • thing about the stash is someone always has to go to the stash to get the shit....dont matter how many times you move the stash.

  • ok where's the next scene after the chess lesson? iono which scene to pick next.

  • what about dem little baldhead bitches. lol

  • what about the bishops?

  • i liked the barksdale crew d'angelo was a good leader

too bad they all died or in jail.

  • slim charles is still alive

  • oh forgot about him

  • poot still alive too

  • hey yo poot
