@Cbev1994 Only way you'll get a download of Steve singing this is if you look up the 1996/7 west end cast recording of JCS. If you do you will also have the advantage of hearing him sing a 26 second long "Die". . Is true, I heard him do this many times while he was in that show. I counted it once, it was so awesome! No video exists of him doing this unfortunately. Have to take my word for it.
Да, и здесь есть русские)) Смешно сказать,но после выступления Билана на 1ом в прошлую субботу, меня как магнитом потянуло послушать Стива. Сидела перед монитором с дурацкой улыбкой на лице и слезами на глазах.
Steve Balsamo's voice and performance are outstanding! I have never seen the appeal of Ted Neeley! I was raised listening to the concept album and when the movie was first released I could not sit through it because Neeley was so bad! He voice wobbles so much at the end of his notes he sounds like a bleating sacrificial lamb I also do not see the "passion" in his acting. He comes of as constipated to me! this guy is by far superior in voice and acting. Thankfully we all get our own opinion:)
Steve Balsamo does an alright job at this, he's good.
But trying to replace Freddy Mercury of Queen, or Neal Pert of Rush, cannot be done. Right? Haha, Ted Neeley is the king when it comes to Jesus Christ Superstar. More emotion, and a much greater voice.
Im not saying Balsamo didn't capture the emotion, don't get me wrong. But Ted Neeley is the king.
Trevor White and Jon English nailed it and I agree...Steve did a bang up job....Ted Neeley is also good but I must say Steve sure shows the passion....
Wow that was awesome. I recently finished working on this show for an amateur theatre company and the this guys voice sounds very simillar to the guy who played Jesus in the show I worked on. But I will say the guy in my show was just a little better then balsamo. But balsamo is still amazing.
He is very very good, even if i love Ted Neely. But for me the best Jesus ever is a version of czech singer Kamil Strihavka - amazing and powerful voice plus so deep emotions - unfortunately its not a video and it is in czech language - but just listen and compare.
ok your a moron neeley is by far the best watch the movie good lord help me bite my tounge and watch his performace from 2006 this guy here doesnt have 1 tenth the passion
Balsamo is a fantastic broadway musical-style actor. Both deliver their performances. Balsamo wouldn't have been as good on screen as Neeley was and Neeley can't bring the complete the feeling of the song on-stage, because he doesn't do the over-the-top acting. So both are great singers and great performers, each in his right on his own medium.
@WeGotTheBlues dude? You know it is a rock musical, ted does it way better, it isn't ment to be some oprah (whit some one singing like a woman, he is good but get my point)...and ted does show emotions in a strained and ripped appart way...he does it in a brilliant way, the right way. So shhh! Bet you are not even a singer, I am, so I can judge the singing better, and I act so I think I can judge that better too.
@NeoAhiTtlZerI8120118 Obviously you do like Ted's better that's fine.... everyone is entitled to their opinion but you say you are a better judge on which is the better version simply because you are a singer and can act doesn't make you a better judge than us! For all we know you may not be a very good singer or actor! And quite possibly not a very good judge of what is good singing and good acting. Obviously In your own opinion you are! I like this version THE best and thats mine!
@WeGotTheBlues: I think both of them are absolutely brilliant, but in different ways. In Neely's 2006 performance I think he was the better actor. You could feel the "angst" the "torment". Yes he did scream but only when it was required to show the absolute zenith of anguish, and he did so brilliantly.
Balsamo on the other hand has a more controlled, polished feel to his performance. Not less effective in any manner, but differently so. The "feel" is more operatic, the range more defined.
@AFTERSHOCKCEX But what you're looking at here is a performance "cold" that is out of the show at a concert. The performance Steve gave in the show at the time was in context and so awesome and emotional. Not even this great video can convey what you felt as part of the audience at that Lyceum show. Never, ever in my life seen anything so powerful and that's saying something because I've seen soooo many performing this including Neeley.
@1Youngcat: You raise a very good point. Yeah, I think you are right, we have to take into consideration that this was a "stand alone" performance done out side the context of the flow of the full show.
Years ago, I always thought Ted Neeley done the best version of this song. Then I heard Steve sing this when he played Jesus in the West End. I then fell in love with Steve singing the song. Steve's voice has got better and better with age. An amazing voice. Plus from the female angle. He is very cute and hot!!
@mugg1959 No recording was made of Steve's performance in the 1996 West End show . Very many let RUG know they wanted it but when eventually they did film a version, it was a different and inferior production to the Lyceum show IMO, with Steve's understudy in the role. God knows why! This vid is from a concert where he sang only the two songs: Geth and Immortal from Poe. It was televised in the Netherlands I believe but no DVD has been released of that concert as far as I know.
Wow. The creators of Jesus Christ Superstar were just as inspired and anointed as the apostles. Watch this, listen, does it not speak to your soul? Can you not relate to this. God loves you, the blood of His Son Jesus. The blood was shed to remove all sin and to show you , how much you are loved. The lamb was sacrificed for All the children of God.
@goatsrock03 Totally agreed. He has sung many different types of songs wonderfully, and wrote various types of songs himself. From many other songs that I heard of him singing, Steve can use his voice to fit the theme of songs and music.
@pumaman1 This is "Rock Theatre musical" from JCS, NOT rock music. Steve did this exactly how this musical number was intended to be and he did it perfectly and the best for the musical stage show. ALW picked him (who was then still unknow and untrained for muscial) for the lead role in 1996 JCS London revival for the same kind of performance he did in the audition. One word - perfection!
His pipes are impressive, yes. But he's not perfect to me. He's Mr. Clean. This is rock. Ask Pat Benetar or any other of the great rock singers. She can sing operatic but she'll tell you she knows how to sing 'rough' without damaging her voice. Until this guy does that then he's just okay in my book.
@pumaman1 I have to respectfully disagree with you, this is not rock. Yes it is a "rock opera" but it is a West End/ Broadway musical theatre production written in the popular rock genre of the era. Hardly Ozzfest. If you want "rough" rock singing buy a $20.00 lawn seat. For $80.00 a ticket I want perfect and the best preformance from the highest caliber singer and actor. That's what you get with Steve Balsamo.
@sneezie24 Agreed. Also the 1996 revival in the West end Steve starred in was a totally different production from the rock-hippy type production of the 1970s. The revival was a much darker and dramatic production and was how ALW had wanted it but didn't get in the 70s stage productions or the film because they had sold the rights away. In fact Steve was chosen from hundreds of others by the producer and AWL because his performance blew them away not once but many times.
@pumaman1 I must disagree with you and agree with @sneezie24. This is a number from a West End/Broadway musical theatre - rock theatre. There is a difference between rough rock and rock theatre. Balsama uses his voice and skills perfectly for this muscial number in this perfermance, no doubt.
@pumaman1 Oh he can do that when needed. But it wasn't. This was how ALW wanted it to be performed for the revival. To him it was perfect and brought him to tears – along with thousands of others! But if its Rock you want, SB has performed with some of the top rock bands around I was at gig were he performed with rock legends. He was the only vocalist for all of them all night. Little clip here of it here, shame not more of the night. Was awesome! youtube.com/watch?v=HVRVc6-PYEY

@xJiyenx There isn't one unfortunately. This video was from a musicals concert in Rotterdam where Steve Balsamo sang only this and Immortal from Poe. He was a guest artist but was the star of the show after these performances. When he was in the west end show 1996 revival it was never filmed and when the show was recorded it was not the west end version and with Steve's understudy, Glen Carter, who took the JC role. No where near as good imo. No idea why! Big mistake as far as I'm concerned.
Why does Justin Bieber's name comes up in comments on just about every genre of music on you tube? At his young age and his short career, he must really be a phenomenon across the board to a great number of people that he is used as a point of reference and compared to anyone whether Beethoven, Mariah Carey, the Beatles, or Eminem. Now Balsamo.

@lynekab A phenomenon he may be, but, come-on... His Baby baby baby oooooh hardly stands comparison with performances like this. My FOUR- year old granddaughter just LOOOOOVES Justin Bieber...... 'nuff said!!!!!!!
I was referencing the "performing arts" - theatre, dance, music, film etc . JCS is musical theatre, as is Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Sweeny Todd and so on. "Rock Opera" simply refers to rock music that tells a story completely in "song" in the manner of traditional opera. I hope this expands you limited knowledge of the subject, if not Google it.
steve balsamo is the greatest solo singer i can think of he was also the lead singer of the storys a band from swansea saw them live in the guild hall had my photo taken with them :D
well let me say this Ted Neely was the original 1973 singer so his version and if you had of watched the 1973 version of it you would see that you can feel what Ted feels. Just as you can feel Steve version i have watched both versions and it doesn't matter what version of the two i still get chills.
Disagree! Michael Ball could not hit the necessary high note perfectly as Balsamo. Ball switches around the high note professionally and the lost the intensity and top performance result as this one.
I cried everytime I watch this vid. Amazing performance,a breathtakingly actor n singer, tears always randown on my cheeks, like the first time I watched Ted Neeley JCS the movie in 1974.
I have to agree with kofkings, this was genius performance by an incredibly talented singer and actor. He blows Neeley completely away in all aspects! And what makes this more impressive is that this was a live performance for 14,000+ people in a country where no one had heard of him. They gave him a standing ovation and he was the "highlight" of this concert in the presses rave reviews! Loyalty to a favorite is great but do not mistake it for better talent!
WOW! this is really a great cover! what a great voice. BUT GOD INTENDED THIS SONG TO BE SANG BY TED NEELY 40 years ago. maybe they should changed the song everytime they make a new JC superstar musical. sorry guys. TED NEELY IS ROCK and ROLL. \m/ NUFF SAID.
technically it must be one of the most perfect performance of all time, but I still prefer Ted Neely's. He's the only one who puts the right quote of drama into this song. Ted Neely is the one and only one Jesus Christ Superstar. Anyone else is just a cover, nothing more, nothing less.
"wow" - that was the first thing i thought !!! I saw and listened to so many singers, performing that song. And he is really the absolutely best I have ever heared. This is not only a kind of taste. I am professional singer and know what I'm talking about. Of course Ted Neeley was great at his time, but sometimes there will be somebody doing much better. Really really amazing performance!!!
inspiring! I was in this musical when I was 10. I sang a solo to the beginning of "Could we Start Again Please" and I thought to myself then-someday I would like to play Jesus in this, but man, you nailed it wilder than anyone I have ever seen perform this! Amazing voice! Certainly-you set a new expectation for this role.
@petercool2 All I'm saying is that there is no way Justin Bieber would be able to sing like this guy (Steve Balsamo).... There is no way he could be able to hit that high note @ 3:56 when hes this guy's age!!
And anyway.... Why are you watching this video then?? Shouldn't you be watching that crapy song, what is it called?? Baba?? Baby??
@petercool2 Seriously???? Justin Beiber????? They are not even close to the same genre of singers or caliber of talent! I am going to assume as well that you are young with limited exposure to the arts! By all means love Mr. Beiber, but to actually think he "sings" better than Steve Balsamo is either juvenile or delusional! One you will out grow, the other requires medication!
@xXmand123Xx That's because 90% of the ppl who watch you tube are faggots!! I mean seriously how can you compare that little pice of shit with this masterpiece?!?! like you said,STUPID!!
wowww!!!! esta version es expectacular, no se si es mejor q la original de ted neeley pero hasta llora en la parte final y mas dramatica de la cancion... que bello tema y q bella interpretacion ..lo maximo
Ted Neely was the original one in the movie. But Steve Balsamo has come closer to him than anyone else has before. Also he favors him a great deal too. Steve is just as awesome as Ted Neely was. Ted Neely was tops!! check it out it is all on youtube with the names and all showing it was Ted Neely who was 1st
This guy is great, but I like Ted Neely more. Something about this guys voice is too technical. Ted Neeley's voice and body language works better for me. Not to say that Balsamo is not outstanding. I also love the spanish singer Camilo Sesto's version. He put this production on the map in Europe. His emotion and voice is...WOW!
Acted *perfectly* - it's not exaggerated, it's not too angry, it doesn't hit the unnecessary extremes of rage and madness that Neeley's performance relies on. It's despair and inevitability and knowledge of human ignorance and impotence when juxtaposed against the omniscience of God. He captures the struggle of someone losing faith while knowing that it must be upheld.
@kofkings I don't think the real jesus would be so calmed about the time of dead coming...im pretty sure this is a theme that has to be extremely dramatic... srry!
@franzcasablancas I don't think crying, yelling at God, and falling to your knees in despair are marks of calmness, but I could be wrong, of course.
It's alright, though. Not everyone can appreciate nuance. Some people just *need* that extra, over-the-top rendition of emotions to fit their black-and-white understanding of how human feelings work.
@kofkings something i love about is your touch at writing your comments, really appreciate it, even though, this is a rock opera.... I believe rock is the, as u said, over the top music genre in emotional matters. This is not a musical...it's simply THE MUSICAL, and srry again... i don't see him crying, or falling.... i just see somebody playing jesus role....with neely, i see jesus crying! and singing to rock opera yeah! wht else can u ask for?
@kofkings You are absolutely correct! He performed JCS over 400+ times so he had this song down pat! He is the best of his generation. Neeley did his best for his generation as well. I am from Neeley's generation but Steve Balsamo has surpassed Ted's movie performance. I have enjoyed them both! Appreciated your comment very much!
@kofkings Are you kidding me?? Anything after Neely is hindsight....This man is good however no the doesn't perform this as Neely does...What is your problem with Ted Neely?? In fact this dude basically copies Neeley...Haven't seen an original note. Give me a break dude...this is strictly a copy...WTF listen to Neely again and maybe have a toke.....
@conmaesta Steve actually tried to follow Ian Gillian rather than Neeley. Steve praticed upon Gillan's version for his audtion (said in his interview with BBC Radio) for the lead role for 1996 JCS London revival. He made ALW cried and got the role amongst thousands of candidates. Steve followed Gillian's version and made it his own style and even more suitable for the stage show. Neeley's style is different from Gillan and S Balsamo.

Hardly Ozzfest. If you want "rough" rock singing buy a $20.00 lawn seat. For $80.00 a ticket I want perfect and the best preformance from the highest caliber singer and actor. That's what you get with Steve Balsamo.
sneezie24 9 months ago
@sneezie24 Agreed. Also the 1996 revival in the West end Steve starred in was a totally different production from the rock-hippy type production of the 1970s. The revival was a much darker and dramatic production and was how ALW had wanted it but didn't get in the 70s stage productions or the film because they had sold the rights away. In fact Steve was chosen from hundreds of others by the producer and AWL because his performance blew them away not once but many times.
1Youngcat 8 months ago
@pumaman1 I must disagree with you and agree with @sneezie24. This is a number from a West End/Broadway musical theatre - rock theatre. There is a difference between rough rock and rock theatre. Balsama uses his voice and skills perfectly for this muscial number in this perfermance, no doubt.
jd2011music 8 months ago
@pumaman1 Oh he can do that when needed. But it wasn't. This was how ALW wanted it to be performed for the revival. To him it was perfect and brought him to tears – along with thousands of others! But if its Rock you want, SB has performed with some of the top rock bands around I was at gig were he performed with rock legends. He was the only vocalist for all of them all night. Little clip here of it here, shame not more of the night. Was awesome! youtube.com/watch?v=HVRVc6-PYEY

@jd2011music

Where can I find the full video? The musical complete?
xJiyenx 10 months ago

The best version of this song that I have ever heard.
Svetsarkirurgen 11 months ago
I was referencing the "performing arts" - theatre, dance, music, film etc . JCS is musical theatre, as is Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Sweeny Todd and so on. "Rock Opera" simply refers to rock music that tells a story completely in "song" in the manner of traditional opera. I hope this expands you limited knowledge of the subject, if not Google it.
sneezie24 11 months ago
Art? "Rock opera" is entertainment. For idiots.

To kofkings, I respect your views. But Ted Neeley is the best at this song. Always will be.
This rendition is great. Even amazing. But it's not Ted. It will never be Ted.

steve balsamo is the greatest solo singer i can think of he was also the lead singer of the storys a band from swansea saw them live in the guild hall had my photo taken with them :D
Welshdragon12321 1 year ago
well let me say this Ted Neely was the original 1973 singer so his version and if you had of watched the 1973 version of it you would see that you can feel what Ted feels. Just as you can feel Steve version i have watched both versions and it doesn't matter what version of the two i still get chills.

Michael Ball's performance tops this - although this is pretty damn good!
duncanhobbs 1 year ago
@duncanhobbs
Disagree! Michael Ball could not hit the necessary high note perfectly as Balsamo. Ball switches around the high note professionally and the lost the intensity and top performance result as this one.

Loyalty to a favorite is great but do not mistake it for better talent!
sneezie24 1 year ago
WOW! this is really a great cover! what a great voice.

Really really amazing performance!!!

xXmand123Xx 11 months ago
@xXmand123Xx all right homophobe.
Justin Bieber is probably better than Jesus was at singing. Thats why Jesus was a famous magician and not a wold class pop-R&B prodigy.
petercool2 11 months ago
@petercool2 All I'm saying is that there is no way Justin Bieber would be able to sing like this guy (Steve Balsamo).... There is no way he could be able to hit that high note @ 3:56 when hes this guy's age!!
And anyway.... Why are you watching this video then?? Shouldn't you be watching that crapy song, what is it called?? Baba?? Baby??
I think all he is "baby baby baby ohh"
xXmand123Xx 11 months ago
@petercool2 Seriously???? Justin Beiber????? They are not even close to the same genre of singers or caliber of talent! I am going to assume as well that you are young with limited exposure to the arts! By all means love Mr. Beiber, but to actually think he "sings" better than Steve Balsamo is either juvenile or delusional! One you will out grow, the other requires medication!

Ted Neely was the original one in the movie. But Steve Balsamo has come closer to him than anyone else has before. Also he favors him a great deal too. Steve is just as awesome as Ted Neely was. Ted Neely was tops!! check it out it is all on youtube with the names and all showing it was Ted Neely who was 1st

jimmyb227 1 year ago
Equal to Ted in quality and emotion but not with experience. Give Steve time and see what he will do.
StargazingForJesus 1 year ago
This guy is great, but I like Ted Neely more. Something about this guys voice is too technical. Ted Neeley's voice and body language works better for me. Not to say that Balsamo is not outstanding. I also love the spanish singer Camilo Sesto's version. He put this production on the map in Europe. His emotion and voice is...WOW!
TheVenusRising 1 year ago
Acted *perfectly* - it's not exaggerated, it's not too angry, it doesn't hit the unnecessary extremes of rage and madness that Neeley's performance relies on. It's despair and inevitability and knowledge of human ignorance and impotence when juxtaposed against the omniscience of God. He captures the struggle of someone losing faith while knowing that it must be upheld.
In short, the guy is a genius.

@kofkings I don't think the real jesus would be so calmed about the time of dead coming...im pretty sure this is a theme that has to be extremely dramatic... srry!
franzcasablancas 1 year ago
@franzcasablancas I don't think crying, yelling at God, and falling to your knees in despair are marks of calmness, but I could be wrong, of course.
It's alright, though. Not everyone can appreciate nuance. Some people just *need* that extra, over-the-top rendition of emotions to fit their black-and-white understanding of how human feelings work.
kofkings 1 year ago
@kofkings something i love about is your touch at writing your comments, really appreciate it, even though, this is a rock opera.... I believe rock is the, as u said, over the top music genre in emotional matters. This is not a musical...it's simply THE MUSICAL, and srry again... i don't see him crying, or falling.... i just see somebody playing jesus role....with neely, i see jesus crying! and singing to rock opera yeah! wht else can u ask for?
franzcasablancas 1 year ago
@kofkings You are absolutely correct! He performed JCS over 400+ times so he had this song down pat! He is the best of his generation. Neeley did his best for his generation as well. I am from Neeley's generation but Steve Balsamo has surpassed Ted's movie performance. I have enjoyed them both! Appreciated your comment very much!

In fact this dude basically copies Neeley...Haven't seen an original note. Give me a break dude...this is strictly a copy...WTF listen to Neely again and maybe have a toke.....
conmaesta 11 months ago 2
@conmaesta Steve actually tried to follow Ian Gillian rather than Neeley. Steve praticed upon Gillan's version for his audtion (said in his interview with BBC Radio) for the lead role for 1996 JCS London revival. He made ALW cried and got the role amongst thousands of candidates. Steve followed Gillian's version and made it his own style and even more suitable for the stage show. Neeley's style is different from Gillan and S Balsamo.
