@lemondropsforever Not a solved problem for women who will not be able to breastfeed like me. I think there needs to be stricter regulations for formula production. Formula is still needed for babies.
A new melamine scandal has erupted in China this month and so it seems nothing ever changes.
I would like to point out that The AP article also stated that melamine has been an approved food-grade plastic for a long time. I used to eat off of melamine plates. There is a big difference between melamine monomer added to food to raise the apparent protein levels, and the presence of melamine polymer at trace levels.
I don't think melamine is an estrogen imitator like BPA for instance...
I think they should really test all of the formula and get it all out, because that's a huge health hazard, my little girl used to be on formula at around this time. That scares me a little. I mean what if that could have been my baby? But it's good to know about this issue:)
They did test it and found 90% of it was contaminated. They decided it was ok. Sure, the babies are not going to flat out die, but that doesn't mean it's ok to feed them plastic.
Don't worry about it. For one, the amount is really small, not like what happened in China. It's not good that it's in there, but your baby is probably fine.
Second, to be safe you could try switching her to an organic formula of the same type (i.e. cow's milk if that's what she was on).
My kid was partly formula fed, too. Don't stress out, we all just try to do our best.
im 13 weeks pregnant. I know still have a while, but have really been thinking about breastfeeding I am just scared because I dont know anyone who does and I will be nervous to do it around people at least at first. But seeing this makes me want to breast feed even more. Also seeing your videos of breastfeeding in public helps me want to too. especially the one of you in starbucks. Very inspiring.
Oh great! That's wonderful you want to breastfeed. They key to successful breastfeeding is having the right support. My advice is, look up La Lech League and see a lactation consultant. Also, get the LLL book "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding'- it will make a huge difference.
Melamine is only a tiny part of it. Babies really do need mother's milk.
Some will argue that even though US produce powder milk is contaminated why there isn't any infant deaths !, well if you multiply the population of the USA by roughly five times to equals China's populace, you will have the the same amount or even more infant deaths since over 90% of US produced milk is contaminated compare to only 20% in China's case.
Interesting point. I would assume that there haven't been any deaths here because the levels are a lot lower than they were in China, but who knows how many kids are damaged in some way from this.
Got to remember as well that there is greater percentage of infants in China that rely more on powder milk formulas than those in North America that may have an option of using fresh milk or canned infant formulas instead.
I am glad someone pays attention to what is happening at home while our corporate sponsored basis media hides the truth from us !
Is this what we call "freedom of the press" ? can also mean freedom not to report !
@sonia989 Sonia, most folk don't care about what they can't see. There is a book called "silent weapons for silent wars" Maybe you could peruse it. PS How many channels do you have? Here I thought I was getting all the info that you so diligently put out, then I came across this. Thanks again for the info, and your diligence.
In China those responsible were executed and imprisoned, in the USA these culprits are rewarded by the FDA to continue producing contaminated milk ! ...LoL
Domperidone? Does that help w/breast milk production? I'll ask my dr about it when I get closer to delivery. Thanks for the advice & sorry you had to go through surgery too!
It worked great for me, helped me go from 10% breast milk to 70% breast milk. You start when your baby is about 4 weeks old. Whatever you do, don't introduce formula right away because it undermines BF and your boobs won't have a chance at keeping up with baby's demand. Wait a few weeks to see how your baby's weight gain is going. If it's really not adequate, even with the Domperidone, you can always supplement at that point.
I wish I made enough breast milk to go past feeding 3 months. I had surgery to remove tumors years ago and milk ducts were severed so I have a low milk supply, I'll have to turn to formula after 3months w/this baby on the way too. :(
I had breast surgery too and had the same problem. Have you tried Domperidone? It worked for me, but I did have to also supplemet. At least you can start your baby off on your milk, which is the most important part.
Add this too another good reason to breastfeed your baby (if you are able too).
The FDA also approved artificial sweetners in softdrinks that are harmful to your health.
I was thinking is there any danger in microwaving food in melamine plateware? (I know it says that melamine plates/bowls are not microwaveable, but I do sometimes reheat food in them.)
You should realize that dairy cows fed melamine tainted pet food pass the melamine through the milk (case study, Nestle in South Africa. Chickens fed melamine tainted feed pass the melamine through to the eggs. Melamine damages the reproductive organs. My point is that breastfeeding is only safe if the mother is not eating food tainted with melamine.
I have reason to believe we are all likely consuming melamine at least in small amounts.
We need to join together and remedy this situation.
You are right, the problem may extend way beyond formula. But if the alternatives are formula proven to be tainted or human milk with a theoretical risk of contamination, I would choose human milk which carries vast health benefits overall, while formula feeding increases many health risks.
It's sad to think how toxic every aspect of our lives has become.
Agreed. If I had a wife and a newborn, I'd want her to breast feed. I would want her to watch her diet and not consume processed foods considering the risk of melamine.
If you knew what I know about melamine and our food supply you'd be quite scared.
Breastmilk. problem solved.

@ericaj58 I totally agree, formula is a great alternative and hopefully will be better regulated.

The air is polluted too. Are you doing to keep your baby from breathing?

And while you're at it, stick a cigarette in his mouth and give him a BPA sippy cup. Hey, what the heck.

@foxybliss I haven't a clue why 3 people gave your comment a thumbs down. You sound concerned, and as well you should be.
