You know, it's hard to believe that MJ truly disliked how the music he help compose in S3 turned out, but I am sure he had some or little pride for them considering Stranger In Moscow IS the S3 Credits theme! =)
i wonder how would they do this awesome soundtrack if they have release this game in others consoles. By the way, is the arcade version too different?
This music>>>> Most music in games. Seriously, this stuff tops a ton of the over-the-top war music you get in games nowdays. Why can't game music still be like this? Only some franchises like Sonic still have catchy soundtracks in there games.
I dont know the exact term for a Genesis song but I just class it as a chiptune.
MIDI is what people use on programs like cubase with those shitty keyboard sounds. Download some MIDI game music from VGMusic and youll hear what I mean
@Renegade466isback Same goes for the Genesis' chiptune, oddly enough. A lot of games on the Genesis sound like their soundtracks are fart noises and unusually creepy clusterfucks of noises, but some games uses the chiptune to make unforgettable, legendary songs! Hell, look what they did to MJ songs. :D
@Renegade466isback While it may not apply here, some Genesis games use MIDI. Davis Cup World Tour is one example. You can extract the MIDI samples and play them in a normal MIDI player. You can also replace the MIDI inside the ROM. It won't sound like it does on PC, mind you. Some programs that play MIDI may complain about the file if it is padded.
@Renegade466isback chiptune is the style of electronic music found in retro video games, i.e. video game music or video game soundtrack. Chiptune is pretty much "new-school" video game music not made by video game companies but by musicians that happen to be retro game (soundtrack) enthusiasts.
@eteodoroz: No, MIDI represents another sound quality. The Sega Genesis featured the Yamaha YM2612 soundchip which offered 6 channels of frequent modulation synthesis (e.g.: FM bass). An add-on was developed by Texas Instruments that embedded 4 additional sound channels in PSG format (Programme Sound Generator, Model: SN76489). I always preferred Sony's soundchip for the SNES (SPC-700). ;)
@Renegade466isback Technically, it is MIDI, because the consoles like Genesis only had certain instruments.
Also, AOO!
Also, Konami's board was an SCC board, I believe. GXSCC emulates that board, but you ca switch to NES emulation mode in Configuration by choosing Famicom-like set.
Completely wrong. The Genesis has a dedicated Z80 CPU which controls a YM2612 FM and SN76489 PSG chip. By changing the parameters passed to those sound chips, you can create lots of different sounds. Any programmer can write his own "sound driver" for the Z80 and create his own sound format.
Google FM and additive synthesis to understand how the Genesis actually works. MIDI ist just a very primitive standard which just defines a fixed set of pre-defined instruments.
And apparently MJ didn't like the limitations it had because he quit working on Sonic 3's music with Sega saying he didn't like it or something. Wikipedia tells all, trust me,
What has Michael Jackson not liking the sound hardware to do with the fact that the music format is NOT "MIDI" ? Technical documentation about the MD/Genesis is readily available on the net. Learn how the hardware works and then come back here, before accusing anyone of lying. The only thing the Genesis has is an FM and PSG sound generator. This has nothing to do with "MIDI".

That one dislike is from a homophobic social conservative MJ hater who believes all of those false rumors about him.
Nintendo had Mario, Sega had MJ and that was epic.

Yamaha synths were used quite a bit in MJ's songs, so it's no surprise that they fit so well on the Genesis, which also uses a Yamaha chip.
