Game engines are a pain in the ass.

I've tried others like Unity, DirectX Studio, GameStudio... the list goes on. The bottom line is that programming your own engine is the best way to go.

If the engine is very fast and flexible, chances are you'll have to suffer from no documentation.

Writing your own version of something that "acts" as an engine is way less gay than writing something gay like an engine, or using engines that bring not enough help.

Write games raw.

man the fun i had with the sand box editor of farcry 1, the good thing is that you can download the source code to the engine too, well not all of it, but its enough to make another game from it. all u need to know after that is a bit of C++ and scripting. and ofcourse 3d modelling and etc,,

use an existing engine... i would suggest start by making maps for games like counter strike source or left 4 dead to get the hang of 'how to', then make your own entities to make a game...

and u get the SDK if u buy one of vavle's games for free..

Depending if you want to make it a good or bad game i prefer using already made game engines and modifying them to fit my needs, i have applied for a license for this game engine if all goes well the game will be released in about 1 year... stay in touch with my channel for updates

You could try using Blender's engine :)

It would be a good start...

But if you are serious about gaming... try to focus on something... Game Design, Programming, Game Art... Focus on something... Try to get at least 1 partner to go along :) (you = artist, him/her = programmer)

I gathered a freeware/open-source pack for game-dev (focusing on art/design). CMap and Celtx for Pre-production. Blender, Wings or Anim8r for modelling. Anvil Studio & Quartz for audio. Camstudio for screen recording. Inkscape for vector. Gimp for bitmaps/textures. Irrlicht with IrrKlang for Engine. Other engines: Ogre3d or Panda3d. Try working on some Mods for Fallout 3 or Unreal Tournament 3, to get experience :) Good luck! I'm no pro, but PM me if you wanna talk more :D

i totally agree. ps3 already has uncharted:drakes fortune out after 1 year and it is already fairly close to crysis graphics so later on in the future the graphics will be much better.

but you also have to remember that this is the first game built for the 8800gtx or whatever it is so the graphics for it can get much better

yes a PS3 is capable of produce better graphics than even an 8800GTX! PC is expandable, so what if its better just add another 8800GTX card in SLI and then it kickes th PS3s ass. A pc will destroy an ps3 graphically, the pc is always a better platform and by the time ps3 graphics are fully used, the PC will have better standard GFX cards anyway. To run crysis at max everything you need 3GTXs in SLI. The ps3 cant get close.

I wouldn't go as far to say its a stunt. You are right the ps3 and the xbox 360 are more than capable to handle a game like this specially the ps3. The thing is that theses newer gaming consoles minus the Wii. At the time of there release they are faster than any pc. xbox 360 has 3 processors running at 3.0ghz. PS3 Has its 8core Cell processor. Pc's are just now catching up.
