Thank you again Tom! I've bought many a game from your reviews and Yomi is one such gem. I'm sorry I put off the purchase for so long. Worth every penny for the full set.
Anyone want to help me break this game? Thinking of sitting down with it and finding all of the exploits, then I'll compile my findings into a combo video and reveal all of the flaws...that way, no one will enjoy Yomi.
@Renulph The betatesters had a couple of years to do it and didn't manage to so I doubt you will either. And exploits in fighting games rarely break the game.
This is a REALLY fun game. It takes a couple matches to get the hang of it, but the learning curve is pretty gentle overall. Once you know the mechanics it's pure tactics and mindgames. Love it.
@Laserwulf I've got a ton of cards/starter decks for UFS, but have never learned how to play it. Everybody I've talked to says it's like mandatory to learn the game from someone who knows it well than to learn it on your own. Is that true?
@wakigatame2010 Pretty much. I had a few UFS decks and tried to learn from the rulebook, but it just didn't click until I went to a booster-draft at the FLGS and the guys there taught me how to play.
A friend of mine just bought the full Yomi box, so soon I'll be able to accurately compare the two.

What a steaming load of turd. I appreciate Tom's support of smaller companies but sheesh, this seems like something an 8 year old could have come up with.
@TNTBioHazard It's called spell check. Learn to use it if you insist on pointing out someone's intelligence. Makes you look like even less of a retard than you really are.
Wow, this is a great game. I just played a match where it was Lum, the Panda (me) vs Setsuki (the fast combo ninja) and I got knocked down really fast. I was down to 1 life and she had 30 left, but I pushed my luck and managed to dodge an attack with his ace and did 20 damage, then I used Lum's 7 to draw a card and got another Ace (the last in my deck) and used it to evade another attack and got another 20 in Black Jack to win 1 life to -10! EPIC!
I remember playing this before they got all the art done and my friend had printed up a copy to play test it. All I remember was that Rook was the best and that the painter lady was pretty terrible. Also at the time Argagarg's art was one of the mudkip things from WoW since they hadn't all the art done yet. From what I played of it then (like 1 - 2 years ago) It was an awesome game.
Ah, makes sense that Sirlin did it. He is a very interesting game designer who talks about competitive balance in games like Street Fighter and Puzzle Fighter. If you're interested in gameplay balancing at all, I suggest reading some of his articles, they are very well thought out and written.
You can have 10!/2!*8! = 45 pairs of decks. If you take into account that you playing deck A and opponent playing deck B is not the same as you playing B and opponent A then you have 90 possibilities.
While it seems somewhat interesting, it feels just a bit steep to pay a hundred bucks for a two-player card game. If they could manage to get the price down a bit I'd consider it, but right now it's just too expensive.
@Zejety I suppose, but then I would lose the great variability that comes with the complete set. Besides, even the two-deck packs are pretty expensive for just decks of cards, and you have to buy fixed pairs as opposed to choosing the ones you want. In the end it's just not worth it to me.
@bexarath You can buy a two pack of cards for $25. All you need are the two decks to play. Though, I do agree that to get all the decks and the playmats, it's a little steep. But do appreciate that the quality of the stuff you get is better than most big publisher's games, and that the second run will probably come down in price. It's an economy of scale issue.
Tom's right on every point in my opinion. Very fun game! It's weird to say this but playing this game feels like playing a 2D sega fighting game or something.
How long did it take you to reorganize all the decks after tossing them together like that? My OCD got itchy just looking at it

Yes, such highly original ideas are usually avoided like the plague by real companies so that they end up being self published.
