Once again, since Hatsumi is Soke, he has the right to make changes on how the test is given. Also he is there witnessing the test. He has said many time he will not leave an heir, but that all the jugodans will inherit the system. Why do you believe that he only has the right to give the test? I suggest to travel to Japan and train with Soke and the Shihans to understand. At least then you can make your opinions known in front of him and the shihan, where it would count for something.

Automatically when i saw this, i knew that i'd be saying this. Hatsumi is Soke and just as gmarquay said, the only one allowed to give the sakki test. It's good that your friend passed but I really do wish that your dojo would respect that it's Hatsumi who should give the test.

The Togakure Ryu scroll supposedly says that only the Soke can give the sakki test, or else the one giving it will feel the wrath of the gods. Soke Hatsumi is allowing his students to violate this premise of the Togakure Ryu. Why is himself violating what the old masters have put forth? Just food for thought.

The scrolls are updated and added to by the Soke of the system. If Soke Hatsumi wishes to make changes to the scrolls he has every right to do it. As far as the wrath of the gods, there is no fear, for there is only one and true God, and he is the God of Mercy and Compassion. More food for thought.

The Soke can break with the tradition. It was also a Japanese tradition not to allow foreigners to learn their martial arts, because they thought they would be cursed if they did. But many asian martial arts have opened up to foreigners.

@gmarquay Coz' if he didn't the art would eventually die. The goal is to make the student better than the master, in all martial arts. The way to do that is to teach your students everything, and hope they will be better than you once was..

@gmarquay one scroll against how many other scrolls and teaching in the many schools that are the basis of the bujinkan. And also with however many thousand bujinkan members now, that would be somewhat impractical

@Blazureokami I believe it would be more practical to limit the Soke as the sole giver of the test. However, he would need to get back to having Yodans with real, hard training, under their belt for many years, prior to administering the test. Its truly a joke these days.

Soke stopped giving Godan tests around 2005. He has been training the jugodans to give the test and emit the sakki feeling. At the 2007 DKMS, Soke had said its time for the jugodans to take over.

Being able to emit a sakki feeling and being able to fight can be two separate things sometimes. Certainly there are people who never trained in the martial arts but are street fighters and able to emit a sakki feeling. Then there are those who train in martial arts for years and can project energy but can not fight. Every situation is different, we must adapt and endure. Thanks for you comments! I am not familiar with shen in Chinese. As far as I know Saakki is a killing intent and it is a sort of Ki or chi that is being emitted.

"sakki" is the intent to do harm. The characters that make it are "satsu" also pronounced "korosu" which means "murder" and "ki" which means "feeling". The sakki test should only be given by someone who is experienced. Ed Lomax has said that when he gives a test he is really trying to kill you. With that intent and as long as the intent and the action are simultaneous it is an effective test.

I don't know him from a bar of soap and I've seen a few shihan and shidoshi who leave a little to be desired but you shouldn't underestimate anyone.

A few years ago I trained with a shihan who was visiting from Italy.  At the break I was asked how good he was and I said "a bit to be desired". But during the second half of the class I realised he was close to the best I have ever trained with and my comment just reflected the fact that he was training at my level.

I saw a friend this Christmas, who started training in the Booj with me in 1990,he went on to train with a 10th dan (Lincoln Dojo) in 94, and got to 4th dan. He has now left martial Arts altogether because. 1. Hatsumi doesnt do the test, 2.training with this Shihan , left him with an inability to fight, too much talking and Kata! and not enough Training! he laments. So this shihan (well known BTW) ruined a martial career!

Another Friend (still in the Booj) laments the fact that his students including his son will not feel the awe of Hatsumi doing the test, his son is 13 and I would put him up against any of you guys in a sword fight! (and a real fight when he fills out a bit)(for instance when was the last time you rolled with a live blade? (He does this nearly every lesson!) and did sword cutting in class, (hes been Training since 3years old btw)

I agree, you cant judge a persons personality from a clip but you can tell their training experience, this person looks to me like he has never used a real sword for cutting, he bends his back at the end of the cut for some reason, and he looks too stiff, in the shoulders, he may be a very nice bloke but he needs to train more, with the sword, imho,
