The hi hat plays 3 sixteenth notes with the second one missing like a jazz rhythm. They are not triplets. Also the second sixteenth note is ghosted on the snare. The right plays all the hi hat notes and left hand plays the snare. That is the way Jamie Oldaker played on the original. He stated this in an interview in Modern Drummer magazine. You can play it anyway you want but that is how the origianl was played,
@331paradiddle BTW orignal tempo was 96 BPM. Very good groove to practice. Pretty challenging to get the feel and keep steady time with a drum machine
there's a live version of the tune with Steve Gadd drumming. How does he make it look so easy? (and yes, it's triplets on the studio version but Mr. Gadd make it work without them)
Its a cover, they aint supposed to be exactly like the original, I loved it, thanks for the video, I got my favourite way to play this song for my band now, this was great!
So my band says, "hey, theres something your missing on "Wonderful Tonight." They don't know that I used to sing it to my now deceased wife, and it chokes me up every time.
So I find your video, and its the solid high hat I am missing. So thank you, it was great, I will wipe the tears, and back to practice!
Your drums sound as holy as an English choir.

Triplets, yes, but I like them too. Check out the Steve Gadd live version..no triplets but he makes it sound so easy.

Thanks for making the comment, and I am sorry to hear about your wife, it can be a very sad song in that context.
It's the 16ths on the HH that gives it the feel I think...Good luck.

There are many ways to play this song - I just drum for fun, and to me it is not important, but thanks for the observation.
