u can go even further and make it bigger and add a male and female guppies the they will breed eat the plants an shrimp and the shrimp will eat there babies
@MonicasFly Red cherry shrimp are very well capable of living in these conditions. They are comfortable and sometimes even breed in there. There is a whole cycle of life that goes on in the sealed container. You probably don't know what that is, though.
Yankee Candles have excellent Ecosphere containers...just buy a BIG candle and burn it until the wick is gone, and then freeze it in a freezer for a couple of days and pick out all of the wax with a spoon.
if you close the jar how is the water getting oxygen is it from plant ? also how do you prevent algae build up ? x sorry im just trying to figure it out i have only had marine fish tanks with filters and stuff but i like the idea of this, im just trying to wonder how it actually all works :'D im not the brightest of people x
The oxygen comes from the plants, the algae is controlled partly because you won't keep it in full sunlight and partly because both snails and shrimp will be eating the algae.
@Itziaralforja say if the jar was 2 ft tall and 1 ft diamiter and you put the same stuff in and you totally sealed it off from the enviriment by closing the lid tight forever , then how long would the ecosystem last,??
@Itziaralforja most likely not. They're native to asia or taiwan, and even then it's a captive bred color mutation. so unless it's a feral population, i'd say no.

@PetProdigies When the lid is closed, how will the guppies acquire oxygen?

In Hawaii there called opi and there actually brackish water so it would be good to add some aquarium salt so that they live longer

Hey just hoping you may be able to answer a few questions about it for me?
1) What type of water did you use? I guess just freshwater from a local pond or something?
2) What type of plant did you use in your ecosphere? I'm aware many use elodea however this didn't look entirely like what I'm used to seeing.
3) What's that stuff at the bottom of the plant?
4) Are pebbles AND sand necessary or 1 or the other can be ok?
I know you mightn't be an expert but any help is much appreciated, thanks!

And after that you no longer need to change the water? I was always told that the foam around the plants was prolifferer algae ... but it's nice
