@P11247 Many people fail to realize that at the point we took away tariffs, that we opened up cheap labor in other countries to export to the us, thus taking jobs away from here. Did jobs leave before the tariffs were lifted, well yes, but on a much smaller scale. When the gates were opened all the jobs flowed out of the US that could be exported. CAFTA will never be repealed now because we owe much of our debt to China, and so no politician is going to make them mad.

I used to teach religious ed and it is scary, that non of the kids (all came from a public school) believed what the church believed was right, only what the govnernment and news media told them was right. @P11247 Quality of life (as measured by the human development index) and social mobility is measurably higher in countries with stronger social safety nets and high tax brackets, like Sweden and Norway. While you can't necessary attribute that fully to "socialist" policies, there are plenty of good reasons to believe that things like welfare and universal healthcare are good for society.

Also, a lot of conservatives seem to be imagining this past utopian America that simply never existed.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. Communism is a branch of Socialism. Socialism is any system that places industry under public ownership. The difference is that democratic socialists believe people should choose what is to be produced. Communism is where the govenrment chooses what is to be produced. And he increased troop levels in Afghanistan and he has launch missle strikes on Pakistan civilians inside their border.
