The system can be taken out of the vehicle you dont have to keep it in the car, some people take it out themselves or take it to the dealership and they will disassemble it for you. I hope this helps
Not all GM cars are equipped with OnStar But I do believe starting this year they have made it mandatory. If you dont want OnStar in your car you can remove it or have the dealership disasemble it, and you can call OnStar and have them cancel the account! If you are buying a new car it will have a digital hardware system, which means anytime you decide to get your account turned back on you can without any problems and you can still recieve emergency help with the red cross button!
I don't understand about the digital hardware system. It sounds like it can't be removed physically, that you can only ask gm to cancel your account, but that the system can be reactivated at any time without any modification to the car - is that right? Because if it is, it means the system can't be removed at all, and then I am certain I will never buy GM again.
I worked for Onstar for 3 years and contrary to popular belief Onstar is not able to disable a vehicle, they are only able to lock/unlock doors, diagnostic test various components of the vehicle, and capture a gps location on the vehicle but they are not able to disable a engine or any other component they dont have the techonological capabilities to do so. The slow does kill the horsepower to the engine but it does not totally stop the vehicle. Onstar is only able to do this with police assit

OnStar will only track a vehicle if the owner reports the vehicle to be stolen. OnStar will not provide the owner with the location of the stolen vehicle. They will notify the police only of the location of the stolen vehicle. If you don't plan on stealing a vehicle, why are you worried about getting a vehicle with OnStar?

it only tracks the car when activated... and the only way to activate it is by YOU. you have to call onstar to have them turn on the locator. The Tahoe has a 6.2L V8 with 403 Horsepower and if you match that with a 6 speed transmission with 2 o/d modes it will out pull any BMW you bring up. Also The Tahoe was awarded 5 out of 5 stars in interior luxury. The Tahoe can do more off-roading due to the frame its on, its on the Hummer H2's frame. The award winning frame with its dimensions, ground clearance and locking differential.

However, there were a lot of complaints not too long ago about people's doors magically locking when the car is on and they're outside of the vehicle...conveniently, they have to call onstar to unlock the car which and they pressure them to buy onstar using that very scenario as a sales pitch.

The "fake aluminum trim" is standard for LS and LT models. There's an option for wood trim there on LT2 and it's standard on LTZ. Most people really don't care about little things like that. Finally, you don't compare an X3 to a tahoe...you compare the tahoe to the X5 or X6. 0-60, The X6 is nearly 2.5 seconds faster than the tahoe and the tahoe lacks nearly 100hp/torque
It also makes it through the slalom faster and at a much higher rate of speed. The X6 offers way more luxury items like iPod interface, i-drive, HID lights, keyless entry/start, better breaks, active cruise, active/massage drivers seat, power lumbar pitch seats, 24/7 concierge, paid maintenance...list goes on...

There are high grade plastics and low grade...the low grade are the ones used on chevys that creak and crack every time you apply pressure...dodge gets ripped on this all the time too by the auto mags.
Only the bottom of the line base models use fake wood on BMWs. There are upgrades that use real bamboo/piano wood for example...chevy doesn't have that

@jamesysam002 The X5 DID get a lot of praise for its offroad performance but it was designed more for onroad use which is why BMW elected to fit the X5 with high performance street tires. However, they offered an "offroad" package that would swap out the tires and do a few tweaks to help with offroad capability. Considering you were 12yo when it first came out, I wouldn't expect you to remember that. Besides, 90% of people never take their SUVs offroad, so onroad performance is more important

What that means is that the OWNER's access to the system is cutoff, but that doesn't mean GM no longer has the right to gather information through its hardware and software.

at the very least, it should be optional, and I don't mean optional to activate. I mean you should be able to by a car that contains absolutely no onstar capabilities and therefore no tracking capability.
Call it tinfoil hat paranoia if you like, you're of the type that thinks "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear", I am more of a "mind your own business" type. Onstar could be intrusive, if not now, then in the near future, and my vote is against this kind of intrusiveness.

Some here said they'd never buy a GM vehicle due to OnStar. To me that's down right ludicrous. What harm does OnStar do. If anything, there's all positives with OnStar. The only con I can think of is paying $200/yr. Even then....that's a small price to pay for emergency assistance. Perhaps these folks just aren't educated enough on the subject.

The system can be taken out of the vehicle you dont have to keep it in the car, some people take it out themselves or take it to the dealership and they will disassemble it for you. I hope this helps

Not all GM cars are equipped with OnStar But I do believe starting this year they have made it mandatory. If you dont want OnStar in your car you can remove it or have the dealership disasemble it, and you can call OnStar and have them cancel the account! If you are buying a new car it will have a digital hardware system, which means anytime you decide to get your account turned back on you can without any problems and you can still recieve emergency help with the red cross button!

It sounds like it can't be removed physically, that you can only ask gm to cancel your account, but that the system can be reactivated at any time without any modification to the car - is that right? Because if it is, it means the system can't be removed at all, and then I am certain I will never buy GM again.

I worked for Onstar for 3 years and contrary to popular belief Onstar is not able to disable a vehicle, they are only able to lock/unlock doors, diagnostic test various components of the vehicle, and capture a gps location on the vehicle but they are not able to disable a engine or any other component they dont have the techonological capabilities to do so. The slow does kill the horsepower to the engine but it does not totally stop the vehicle. Onstar is only able to do this with police assit

any corporation that makes poor quality cars but tries to trick people into buying their crap with dumb ideas like the Hummer - appeals to desire to bully people - and OnStar - appeals to frail fearful idiots - just deserves to be killed and feasted upon by its competitors.
and i really wish it weren't so. Surely GM has the talent, or can find the talent, to do what a car company should do - build good cars?

Same for me. OnStar is a reason not to buy the car. I own the car, I want control. I heard of a man who was shot and killed in his car, the police had OnStar lock the doors, and disable the car. Thats a nightmare.

OnStar will only track a vehicle if the owner reports the vehicle to be stolen. OnStar will not provide the owner with the location of the stolen vehicle. They will notify the police only of the location of the stolen vehicle. If you don't plan on stealing a vehicle, why are you worried about getting a vehicle with OnStar?

It seems simple to me, I don't want my movements tracked and recorded, regardless of how uninteresting they would be to anyone, so i don't want such a system on my car.

it only tracks the car when activated... and the only way to activate it is by YOU. you have to call onstar to have them turn on the locator. It isnt just running all the time with people at onstar looking at a computer screen with everyone's locations. So dont worry, u wouldnt be "tracked and recorded" by any means

for me, onstar is a reason NOT to buy GM.
Why would I want to support a system that allows someone to track me everywhere I go? My vote is against onstar.

Yes they can track you. That is what it is supposed to do. I am claiming that nobody at OnStar gives a rat's ass about you and where you are or might be going.

yeah onstar is not just on american cars, its been on the Acura Rl since like 2005. Lexus uses lexus link but idk if it has this feautre

ur ignorant, thats because no the throttle is offline, there is no power goin to the wheels u nub, u only hear that sound because u cant hear it while the engine is accelerating.

What if some innocent person is driving 75 miles an hour on the highway minding his own business and the onstar messes up and accidentally shuts the car off and this poor soul is stuck in the center lane of a highway.Or lets say onstar accidentally has a glitch and some women or young lady is left stranded somewhere because her car doesn't move.
