If anybody is close to collapse, it is the US and the entire western economic system. China just made a huge oil deal with Iraq, without firing a shot. They also just made huge oil deals with the Saudis, and they are in just about every african country getting minerals and resources. Bush had to ask them "please leave some oil left for us".

What would happen to China in that case? Obama is now reviewing free-trade and is getting ready to impose tariffs and penalities to countries who deliberately put up barriers against American goods.

I'm not sure where you are getting that from but MIT stated that Chinese students return to China to a failed infastructure where they can't apply their degrees. Many want to return to North America or Abroad but with the failing North American economy that option is closed.

I work for one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. I started doing business with China 5 years ago. As I said, right now there is a frenzy to set up more operations in China. We thought it would take them 10-15 years to get where they are today. Right now, they have the same infrastructure capability that we have. What you said may have been correct 5 years ago, but not today.
Associate level scientists are now sweating about their job security because their jobs can be done in china. And MIT would not understand what is going on in our industry. Someone entering our industry from MIT would be considered very green, and they would not understand much. Especially people from academics have a very poor understanding of how we operate in the pharmaceutical industry. So I would not pay much attention to what MIT says about the pharmaceutical business.

As for slave wages, thats the only way they can move up the ladder. There are 400 million of them and the labour is low skilled work. How else do you get companies to move in.

The US pushes US style democracy all over the world. Almost everywhere else other than the US, it does not work. It leads to disaster. Think democracy will work in Iraq? The only reason Iraq has been stable under Saddam was because he ruled with an iron fist and kept out al queda. US style democracy is best suited for the US, but not many other places.

China and US are are a lot closer than many people realize. I know lots of white guys from US going to work in china, and making a life there. And there are certainly many chinese making a life here. And on top of that, there are many mixed families, whith kids that consider themselves part of china and part of the US. I personally spend a lot of time transferring pharmaceutical technology to chinese companies we collaborate with. I have no problem doing this. China may be the only country left up to the task of advancing pharmaceuticals. I want to make sure somebody is still doing the science. If the US doesnt want to do it anymore, or cant do it anymore, I will help the chinese do it. I strongly believe China will be the main player of this new century.

The initial investment will be 5 billion, then 1 billion per year over the next 4 years. This is just in 1 area, pharmaceuticals. It doesnt include other high tech areas. This level of investment would be unimaginable in the US. The entire 1 year budget of the US national science foundation is only 6 billion. This has to cover all fields of science.

I have been doing this first hand, visiting china many times. The success we have had can only be desribed as unimaginable 5 years ago. a former colleague and friend of mine went to China 8 years ago. Now he heads the largest CRO in all of china. I know he is planning to set up his own pharmaceutical venture. But he keeps it quiet because up to now he is so busy setting up his infrastructure, thanks to the western companies investment. In the next year, we will see serious competition coming from China.

China started as a subcontractor, but they are on a very steep trajectory. There are only 2 countries that every large pharma company is interested in, China, and secondly, India. China is of utmost importance. Everybody is pinning their future on China. And from what I see every time I go to China, they are succeeding past our wildest imagination. We were expecting it to take 10-20 years to get to this point. It took them less than 5 years.

We thought it would take them 10-15 years to get where they are today. Right now, they have the same infrastructure capability that we have. Associate level scientists are now sweating about their job security because their jobs can be done in china. And MIT would not understand what is going on in our industry. Someone entering our industry from MIT would be considered very green, and they would not understand much. Especially people from academics have a very poor understanding of how we operate in the pharmaceutical industry. So I would not pay much attention to what MIT says about the pharmaceutical business.
