Love this car and the W8, timeless designs with out of the box engineering. I remember watching this way back in 1994/95 in think, on the Discovery channel.
Jurgen stole from me. He was supposed to send me scans from his collection in exchange for me scanning my entire collection of Vector literature and sending it to him in Germany on DVD. It cost me out of pocket to do this. I delivered. He kept me on the hook for YEARS, with one excuse after another and never came through. He's a selfish liar and a thief. Be careful Vector fans. You've been warned.
Cute ... but the most beautiful, fastest and an utterly gorgeous -- see Wiki: Sonett V: Design Inspiration for the Vector W2 & Ferrari 308 GTB/GTS & Alfa Romeo Carabo Cues -- Saab or for that matter Sonett, if there ever was such thing. What is weird is that despite Saab Sweden having been reported to have received detailed and multiple image files of that c. 1971 Los Angeles International Show Car Design Winner ... back in c. 1999, they claim no knowledge: SERGIO! In-fighting, legacy robbery
"You probably expect a car like this to have been crafted by ferrari, lamborghini or lotus"... Not really... Was thinking more along the lines of a blind man.
hahahaha... high quality..... thats the most awful car i have ever seen. terrible design standards even compared with cars of the same age..... 800,000 dollars for a cars with a steel frame ...!!!! hahahahahaha dream on buddy. might as well build your own kit car..... give me 800,000 and i will come up with something better than this no problem.
At 03:53 - Now THAT is an improper way of wearing one's Filtering Face Piece Device dust mask; caught on film. That would have been an OSHA fine (29CFR1910.134) even back then. I imagine CalOSHA would have had an added say in the matter.
I've met Weigert years ago before he later failed. Still a cool car, but newer electrid cars will put it to shame. Look for the prototype Wrightspeed X-1 and others like it like the Tesla which I've also seen here in northern California.
I never realised these cars were built to be so rugged and last so long, and yet the owners probably never drive theirs! This car would make one hell of a daily driver!
The most attractive feature about this car to me is how rigid it is. Looking underneath the pretty body line, finely crafted interior, and superb power plant, you'll see that this car is built like something from NASA.
I think the biggest issue people had with the design was that it lacked cohesion. A Lemans racer has twice the ducts, also all functional, and yet looks sculpted and smooth, almost organic. This was an 80's design take on the 70's "flying wedge" theme that was updated into the 90's. The years were simply too hard on the look. That's not to take away from it's cutting edge tech and build quality, which were superior. But pushbottons and toggle switches in a street car? Really? Way too 70's.
I said nothing about the build quality, in fact I praised it. And I love the cars of yesteryear as much as anyone.
My point was that the styling went down hard with a lot of aficionados because it wasn't cohesive. The Lagonda, TR-7, Esprit, etc., all cohesive. Vector let their engineers do the design and that's like the Star Trek episode w/ Christopher Pike. The aliens made the parts on the woman functional, but lacked the skill to make it aesthetically cohesive.
Automibiles have been modeled after aircraft since the 20's and early sports cars had cockpits nearly identical to planes, In the 50's this was in it's heyday with the tail-fins and jet nozzle styled rear ends and bubble canopies. You can't really judge anything from the past by current standards because it's not a fair comparison. This car was state of the art when it was built with it's controls and HUD.
@starstarstar42 oh so shit thats in almost every car made today is too '70's? that makes sense i guess. so hey get rid of the ascari with the switch, its a shit car because of it.
That made me laugh so hard when i saw that truck fly by. However, it makes sense. They were trying to film the car from another vehicle, so they kept at a slower speed.
That's why this Vector was faster than anything the Italians could dish out at the time right? Cause it doesn't belong on the highway. That's also why it's more rare than most italian cars too... right?
Wow,I am going to say that there is a youtube video of my favorite vector?, I love the design is so futuristic for a car 20 years ago.One question: The succesor of this car was the M12 or Roadster?
They stretched the body, made it from fiberglass and not Kevlar, dropped in a Lambo engine, filled the interior with inferior Pontiac Fiero controls they bought from GM in bulk... and made a horrible car...
Finally, Gerald Weigert was able to purchase all that remained of the company he founded twenty years before and is now in process of attempting a resurgence...
oh ok, gacha. that's really to bad, vector had something great going, but of course money always gets in the fucking way but what does megateck make? and that's not true. how coulg megatech own lamborghini when chrysler and audi have been the only two companies to own lamborghini?
The shareholders decided to cut the car part of the company when they failed to sell any cars. and they had to refund a half million dollars to some customer because their car was broken.
Lamborghini stopped giving them engines aswell when Vector failed to pay for them. All in all a flawed project. Now they are trying again with an empty shell and a big need for funding. in the worst times possible. They want to make a car with 1850 hp. Dream on. Doesnt look very realistic to me.
Wiegert and Vector Aeromotive refunded Agassi's US$455,000 purchase price after the car broke down. Repairs on Agassi's W8 were finished, and the car was resold. A total of 17 Vector W8 cars were built for public sale.
I only came across this car by reading into classic american cars and questioning why there are no sportscars in USA at present date. I know there are some but only the Corvette can be seen to be competetive internationally. Strange from such a huge car loving country.
The lamborghini engines were used AFTER MegaTech LTD purchased and revamped the Vector with left over Pontiac Fiero parts and garbage fiberglass body panels - They owned the name and put it on an inferior POS chassis.
I agree, now is a bad time for Gerald Weigert to try and resurrect his dream, but that's what dreams are for.
look what happened to Preston Tucker, too ahead of it's time Like many of the GM cars, Corvair turbos, the Cosworth Vega GT, the last of the Fieros, and the last gen Camaro just when they were getting them right , they took them out of production ,for some odd reason the American public is turned on by driving boxes;it seems that futuristic designs are not well received by the American consumer ,have you noticed what the big three had to do to sell their pony cars again? go back to early 70s
I always wanted this car when I was younger. It's pretty and all, but it handled like a elephant on roller skates. Great presentation, Horrible engineering.
But take a look at the last scene of this! It's wider than an american truck (i don't know it) at least by a half! And peple inside it sid in an empty room. Now, in Europe this space craft would need vertical liftoff, cuz it would stuck in any Old-town Vilnius street from XV century... While Hummers h3 can squeeze in, if they are crazy, this would die.
Plus it's about 400years early for road cars with 400Kmh outside Bonneville.
I heard someplace that it's really a re bodied Lamborghini and avtec is the company that tried to forcefully take over Vector aeromotive...Its that true?
When MegaTech LTD had possession of both Vector and Lamborghini, they stuffed some Lambo engines in a stretched Vector chassis and used a bunch of left over Fiero parts for interior etc...
While the design is not perfect and more round than the first Vector, it's still original and has its own spirit. I will buy one when I have the money (and upgrade everything)!
Well, I work as a freelance car designer and engineer for other custom car builders, and I'm going to look co-operation with someone to open a new kit car (and later luxury exotic car) factory, so I will be able to Use Vector's body panels on my own chassis and interior.
completely agree, the edgy style that made the old vector is completely lost, this looks like a melted lamborghini, the front is a softened lotus esprit, the oversized back reminds of the cizeta moroder, it lends so much from other exciting european sportscars and ends up looking like utter japano-plastic, if you want this kind of "ugly powerful" get an "ultima" instead, much cheaper and even faster (and really ugly!)
lol he doesnt want to go top speed because its their only one lol wtf it should be built to handle fast speed and if something bad could happen, if u can make 1 u can make 100 more...anyway i love the car it's the most extraordinary car ive ever seen
Amazing Video!!!! Thanks two thousand times. Wow it evokes a lot of nostalgia. I still remember the theme music and the robot and the girl and the shining city. This show has been broadcasted nearly ten years in China throughout my childhood which was then crammed full of dreams about the future. 奔向二十一世纪! It seems the 21st century would never come.......
Oh My Avtech,is my favorite american supercar. That pain that this mark does not remove cars. They represented the American power. Of the video I emphasize the phrase that begins with the Never
By the way, Beyond 2000 featured an earlier version of the Vector: the W2. Diehard fans of the show could certainly remember whih one I am talking about. If someone finds it, please post it! Thank you!
TO ALL VECTOR OWNERS:congratulations for having such a great, unique supercar! Can I ask you to please me a little? Can you post a short video featuring the aircraft video display working? What about how do those windows open? And, it is true that Vectors have a luggage space somewhere? Yes, I'm a hopeless Vector fan... Thanks!
In 10 years they'll be laughing, as do, about the green garbage now. Especially that telsa car. Good show though. A lot of them now will be nostalgia down the road too.
when jerry weigert first designed this mid 80,the always claimed rediculous speeds, and as far as i am aware not once have they ever met them, the early ones had a donovan racing all alloy chevy based twin turbo v8,a very impressive bit of kit,but handled like a dog on roller skates...come on northax, give me some banter!not the nicest looking of cars either
Wow, what a memories....I was 6 year old and I saw it in spanish..I'll always remember this ugly and, as a partner said, the worst supercar ever made....Nice vid jajaja!!
You're clueless. This was the best of its day, and if the company stayed up and had backing with the proper amount of money like Ferrari, the Vector would be the best supercar today, comparing itself with Enzo, CGT, etc. I'd bet they'd even make a car to beat Veyron if they had the time and money.
Ahh man, I used to watch this when I was young. Apparantly, what was beyond 2000 didnt live up to their expectation. So far, I havent seen anything high tech for the masses. Only a wider Social Economic gap.
Very true limitations in further developments in the motor industry due emissions laws and other stupid limitations by federal governments have impacted in the progression of the motor industry. Interestingly Vector Motors have a development the Vector WX8 a vehicle with 1380kW/1850HP that has plans to become the fastest production car in the world exceeding the Bugatti Veyron, SSC Ultimate Aero TT and the Koenigsegg.
In a way, alot of ideas have been shot down due to (as in this case emissions laws for motor vehicles) as well as lack of financial investors who don't see the money in it (too afraid to lose out if the idea falters) and other governement/corporation disapprovals (ie. oil companies disapproving of numerous technological advances that threaten their booming economy etc.).
Love this car and the W8, timeless designs with out of the box engineering. I remember watching this way back in 1994/95 in think, on the Discovery channel.

Really? Way too 70's.
starstarstar42 2 years ago
Some of us still love the styling of yesteryear!
I know I do.
As for the push buttons and toggle switches, they were all OFF THE SHELF aerospace components currently in use in many fighter aircraft.
The entire car was conceived, engineered, and constructed to Aerospace Standards. Nothing finer has ever been produced.
Sorry you didn't like it ;-)

While the design is not perfect and more round than the first Vector, it's still original and has its own spirit. I will buy one when I have the money (and upgrade everything)!
SOR4 4 years ago
What exactly would you upgrade?
With what?
:-)
babj615 4 years ago
Well, I work as a freelance car designer and engineer for other custom car builders, and I'm going to look co-operation with someone to open a new kit car (and later luxury exotic car) factory, so I will be able to Use Vector's body panels on my own chassis and interior.
SOR4 4 years ago
completely agree, the edgy style that made the old vector is completely lost, this looks like a melted lamborghini, the front is a softened lotus esprit, the oversized back reminds of the cizeta moroder, it lends so much from other exciting european sportscars and ends up looking like utter japano-plastic, if you want this kind of "ugly powerful" get an "ultima" instead, much cheaper and even faster (and really ugly!)

lol he doesnt want to go top speed because its their only one lol wtf it should be built to handle fast speed and if something bad could happen, if u can make 1 u can make 100 more...anyway i love the car it's the most extraordinary car ive ever seen

A lot of them now will be nostalgia down the road too.

when jerry weigert first designed this mid 80,the always claimed rediculous speeds, and as far as i am aware not once have they ever met them, the early ones had a donovan racing all alloy chevy based twin turbo v8,a very impressive bit of kit,but handled like a dog on roller skates...come on northax, give me some banter!not the nicest looking of cars either
sidewayssam 4 years ago
And like I always say: America can make proper super cars... when we really want to. ;)

Whatever happened to Gerald Wiegert & Vector Aeromotive? I heard he had Indonesian investors but don't how much of that is true.

...you dont know much about the Vector, do you????
babj615 5 years ago
You're clueless. This was the best of its day, and if the company stayed up and had backing with the proper amount of money like Ferrari, the Vector would be the best supercar today, comparing itself with Enzo, CGT, etc. I'd bet they'd even make a car to beat Veyron if they had the time and money.
Northax 4 years ago
nice tech for sure
but the design is still ugly for me
I prefer buy an old bugati if it's for the art of play with the materials lol
tigertouf 5 years ago
Well, this was in the days when the Ferrari F40 was the new thing, and the Vector blew the F40 away in looks... by a mile. In performance, as well.
Northax 4 years ago
That's because the F40 is a hunk of shit! What do you think of Britain's Noble M400?
gyneman 4 years ago
The F40 is more like a go-kart, not that exciting on the straights, but the cornering... Damn.
I don't think a Wiegert Vector W8 Twin-Turbo can do that.

Ahh man, I used to watch this when I was young. Apparantly, what was beyond 2000 didnt live up to their expectation. So far, I havent seen anything high tech for the masses. Only a wider Social Economic gap.

yeah, me too. this was an awesome show back then.

Beyond 2000 was a great show! People just never took advantage of the ideas that it proposed. Very sad... we could have been many years ahead by now.

KGranTurismo 3 years ago
In a way, alot of ideas have been shot down due to (as in this case emissions laws for motor vehicles) as well as lack of financial investors who don't see the money in it (too afraid to lose out if the idea falters) and other governement/corporation disapprovals (ie. oil companies disapproving of numerous technological advances that threaten their booming economy etc.).
