False news of Dracula's death causes Elizabeta to commit suicide; Priest's false doctrine about suicides being damned to hell causes Dracula to sell his soul to the devil. Too bad they didn't have the internet to fact-check their sources...

I've always loved the intro, and the music is simply creepy and moving. The piano chords at 2:37 and the subsequent scene with him riding off into that eerie sunset amidst the field of corpses is simply stunning, shocking, and chilling!
1990's: Vampires in love had huge swords, could conquer entire armies, and vowed to rise from their own deaths to avenge people with powers of darkness.
COOL.
20...whatevers...: Vampires in love whine a lot and sparkle.
I was reading the book without any prior knowledge about vampires and every turn of the page just makes my muscles weaker. One of the best horror-thriller books I've read, although I loved it not because it was horrifying but because the superstitions/vampire literature/history were solidly built up.
Interesting that when I was reading the book around midnight the dog right in front of our house howled.
@cenotaphofmist my sentiments exactly! I too remember reading it at night and it making my skin crawl from the sheer suspense! Its very disturbing, and deeply moving.
I don't think you can be anymore badass than Vlad, I mean the dude goes off to kill an army of turks, impales some of them, yells at preists , stabs a cross and drinks its blood. He was like the Gary Busey of the 15th Century. I love that armor too, it looks so weird like how did they make that back then?
@Pandersmack Dracula's armor as well as the other costumes in the film were designed by Eiko Ishioka, for which she won an academy award. As far as I know it isn't really based on historical armor but was designed that way for appearance. You can find out some more about the costumes by searching for "Eiko Ishioka's Dracula" here on YouTube.
Best opening scene of a movie ever, Gary oldman is sublime , as is Hopkins . Reeves is awful to watch as always . This is a proper vampire movie , not that twilight shit . That cool suit of armour oldman wears is in planet holllywood in las Vegas , I seen it on holiday
@gaaraanime5: Yes, that is Anthony Hopkins as the priest in the beginning scene as well. In some commentary (possibly on the DVD), it was stated that the idea was not that the priest is actually Van Helsing in an earlier life, but rather to re-inforce the idea that van Helsing is Dracula's antagonist, just as the priest was back then. The movie is luridly dreamlike on purpose, and in dreams, sometimes the same person plays different roles.
Is it just me, or does Anthony Hopkins play the main priest in this scene as well? If so, is he supposed to be Van Helsing's past life? Is that why Van Helsing himself was so obsessed with finding Dracula in his life?
i'm romanian,and i tought it's comedy at first sight.I mean the accent is really funny.americans just can't speak romanian and that's a fact,so fail :))))
The priest totally did that on purpose: he knew Vlad had to become the evil Dracula so many centuries later there could be Castlevania games. He was like, hardcore gamer and knew the world could not survive on Kirby alone.
I have to say while not a bad movie, this is probably Francis Ford Coppola's "least best movie. I mean its certainly no Godfather or Apocalypse Now,and as far as Dracula movies go i like the old black and white Bela Lugosi version better.(bare in mind this is just my opinion and you don't have to agree with it)
Theres a game called Castlevania which is based on the book it was released before this movie and Hollywood are thinking of making the movie Castlevania.
Gary Oldman doesn't look like he's acting this looks more like footage of what could of actually happend throughout the whole movie...this, the professional even his recent work as Gordon on batman, he is hands down my favortie actor...and he scares the hell out of me 8-)
well in my opinion NOSFERATU is still the best of em all. i mean bela lugosi was awesome as dracula, but then again the film was more like a theater play. oldman was a pretty good as bdracula too, especialy the old version. but for what i think the movie gets really confusing in the second and thirt act. so i stick to murnau´s NOSFERATU
I like this movie. I gotta say. But my one complaint is that they called it BRAM STOKER'S Dracula. The Dracula of this movie is NOT Bram Stoker's. His Dracula was a monster through & through. It was a Victorian devil that dwelt on earth in human form. It symbolized a sort of anti-Jesus. This Dracula is not the devil himself, so much as a damned soul with a scarred heart. It's someone you can sympathize with. Not that I dislike this version of Dracula any moreso than Bram's monster.

@Baulchy666 Well, when I saw this opening clip and the "making of," I felt the same way. However, after seeing the ads for the new Red Riding Hood take, I have begun to question this.

I've heard this countless times. "this movie doesnt have the standard of the original book" ffs... its always like that. Movies arent meant to be the same experience and almost all on accounts, most movies if not all will disappoint you if you compare it with the original.
With that being said, from a sole movie point of view... this movie is surely a great movie based on one of the coolest concept. And the intro is just badass! Goodoltimes when vamps fucked whores and sucked blood, not cock.

@predalien47 Dont forget into a river. Perfectly dry dress, with blood that somehow wasnt washed away by the river. Oh and her little crown was still there too. Maybe it was stapled into her head beforehand. Oh and her hair too. Perhaps she had an airtight bag around her hair so it wouldnt be ruined in case her body was successfully recovered. And the note, that was covered in SOMEBODYS blood, dont know how that much blood would have gotten onto it after a plunge into a body of water but ok.
@MrSalamander7 Evidently my point was wasted on your insignificant mind. What kind of genius scrolls through literally pages of comments on Bram Stokers Dracula of all video posts just to run his little bitch ass mouth? Some filthy degenerate no doubt.
@ColdCypher lol. I wasn't just scrolling through pages. I saw Carlos' reply to you (which was on the first page) and it intigued me, so I checked out what you wrote. Your point is fucking dumb. What kind of idiot points out tedious pragmatic issues in a film that is clearly VERY surreal and abstract in style. You might as well point out such a fault in a anime fantasy movie. Get lost troll.
@MrSalamander7 Yes someone running his mouth intrigues you to the point of jumping on the loudmouth bandwagon. Says something about your character. Once again, you are showing the world how stupid you really are. That was EXACTLY my point fool! Even after reading it multiple times you and the other moron still dont get it. Yeah youre cool cause you called me a troll LOL. Take a hike. Dont bother replying please. This is over and was over when you responded.
@MrSalamander7 Typical. You just got ass stomped, and here you are rambling incoherently about something totally off topic in order to save face. You lost pal. Have a nice life.
It's meant as symbolism, Also someone who knows a bit of Romanian history would know of the "Blood Cross", which it most likely resembles.
This is said to be a theory as to how he became a vampire. Notice how he yells "The blood is the life and it shall be mine!" This means the blood brings him eternal life, and the eternal life is his since he drank it.
Vlad Tepes is said to be the background for Dracula. This is basically explored in the book "Vlad: The Last Confession".
If I ever got up the guts enough to watch the movie I would, but I get waaaaaayyyyy too scared lol. The novel was fantastic in my opinion, and because you don't see as much of him in the novel as in the movie, it amplifies the malevolence of Dracula homself, whereas the movie almost desensitizes you.
When someone has just seen the one person they love most in the entire world commit suicide, to tell this person that their loved one is burning in Hell is not exactly polite.....
well fortunately, you're a complete moron that probably likes pointless gory piece of shit vampire movies with weak plots and lame one dimensional characters so you're opinion doesn't really matter here :)
Quit acting like some overly sensitive menopausal woman! You're better than that. Obviously my opinion mattered enough to you that you commented on it. Next time, add some meaningful commentary instead of slinging petty insults and injecting a misguided opinion of what you "think" I "might" like. Glad you enjoyed the movie though.
i really don't care what you like... I'm stating fact. this movie is great... I know that you are a moron because you came to a clip of a movie you didn't like and made a stupid comment about it.
you obviously like to be a pretentious prick and that's ok with me if it makes you feel any smarter.
my insults are justified, you deserved everyword
now go watch something more suitable for your vast intellectual mind... like 'twilight' or sesame street.
is it me or the priest went out of his way to piss off Dracula, like he didn't have to say that lol. He could of been cool about it and said yeah man shes in heaven bro its cool shes chilling with Jesus. BUT NO!! he had to piss off the man and create an eternal monster instead.
@kobra no offense to the religios fanatics out there, or the real and faithful but dude, u must be aware the most of the "priest" throughtout history were dumb as shit, it's only now that catholics actually need to read the sacred writting to support their praise with and actual knowledgeable base as it is the bible or the apographa, but don't blame the priest, they know shit about women and the good life XD
@kobra Yeaaa totally right bro, he could've kept his mouth shut and tell him about the hell thing later but nooooooo he went out of his way to piss the dude off, but im sure no one expected the cross to bleed !!! even Dracula was like " WTF IS GOING ON . . . . oooh wait is that wine . . . ama go drink some of that shit !!! "
I'm guessing that drinking the blood from the cross--the christ's blood?--is what gave him immortal life, and renouncing, cursing and swearing venegeance against god is what cursed his immortality with evil.
oh HELL NO. Hugh Grant's only good for comedies and Edward Ferrars in "Sense & Sensibility," NOT serious drama like this beautiful movie. I liked Keanu Reeves in this. I think he played the character as Bram Stoker originally wrote it. James V. Hart did a magnificent job, taking a classic novel, and remaining faithful to the source material, adding his own touch to it.
I LOVE the part where Dracul stabs the cross and blood pours out, the camera panning back to a wide shot; all the while the music rises in intensity. brilliant.
@howtokillawerewolf it really upsets me...look at him in this movie!!!! he is unreal!!! if there is a better living actor than Gary Olman i have not seen him.....Daniel Day Lewis would be my second choice....
Brilliant performance by Oldman throughout the film. He clearly outclasses everyone else..including Anthony Hopkins who in most other cases I would consider his equal.
by the way if you don't belive what i said about the romanian spellings check my channel... im from Romania
oh and Draculia (as the narrator spelled.. in fact its Dracula) was not a knight...he was something defined by an old word, and i dont know the english translations (and i don't mean the word "Vampire"
im pretty sure it wasn't arhaic, because arhaic words differ a lot from nowadays's words...
when i said "Londul fie laudart, am onvins" i forgot to put a big L at Londul (in the original comment) because it means The Lord (God), and i am pretty sure that the spelling of that word at least didn't change at all...
and i don't understand what you mean by "Could it have been a dialect"... isn't Romanian language a dialect itself?
Coppola has a habit of putting the author's names into the title of his movies, if they're based on novels, and Universal owns the rights to the simple title "Dracula." Read the novel again, you fuck face. Coppola DID remain faithful to the novel, adding his own touch to it.
Oh yeah, calling me a fuckface was so necessary for you to make your point wasn't it? Grow the hell up.
The "touch" (read: useless lovestory) that Coppola added was so contrary to the original novel that it negated the entire effort of adapting the novel. In Stoker's novel, the count is a monster, a force of nature, something more than just a character. He doesn't go through an emotional development because he doesn't need to.
It's a rule: Maske your protagonist sympathetic, if possible, and he did.
"Useless love story," my fucking ass. The love story, at least in my opinion, fleshes out an obscure line in the novel (part of which was retained for the movie): "Yes, I too can love. You yourselves can tell that from the past." it's never explained how or why Dracula is a vampire in the novel, whereas in the movie, it's fleshed out in all its glory.
Where does it say a novel can't be named after it's antagonist (which is what Dracula is)? Besides, 'Harker' or 'Murray' isn't exactly as catchy. is it?
I'm a little vague about what you mean by 'main character'.
If you think Dracula is a character we're supposed to sympathize with, doesn't it strike you as a bit odd that he's hardly physically in the novel? It's basically all the stuff Harker's journal at the beginning, after that he only pops up occasionally.
For the vast majority of the novel, Dracula is only this haunting presence, lurking in the edges of the narrative. More like a force of nature than a character.
I think you're really misunderstanding me here. The love story in Coppola's Dracula is useless because it makes Dracula into just another character and takes so much of the menace and what the character is really all about. You want emotional resonance? A character to empathize with? Try Jonathan, try Mina, try Jack, try Arthur, try Quincey, anybody but Dracula! For God's sake, the guy KILLS A BABY, how the hell am I supposed to feel sorry for him?
You can empathize with Dracula as well, as shown in the beginning of the film. He really loved Elisabeta. And Dracula DID NOT kill the baby, he gave it to his brides (a scene taken directly from the novel). I think changing his motivation from blood lust to romance really worked (at least, in my opinion). BEAUTIFUL movie. We'll never agree, so let's just stop discussing this. You're entitled to your opinion, I'm entitled to mine.
1) Saying he didn't kill the baby is like saying: "I just shot him. It was the bullet that killed him' Utter bullshit. No excuses.
2) You can't empathize with Dracula in the novel. Coppola tried to change that in his film, but failed IMO.
3) I never said it was a bad movie. The cinematography and some of the acting is breathtaking. It's just the narrative that's a complete mess. Especially after Lucy gets staked. It all goes to hell from there.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Thank you, this is a point that i try to bring up constantly. There is freethinking, openminded, independent women, and then there are the women in this movie, who are, to put it eloquntly, a bunch of stank ass ho's. Thats my problem with this movie
I tried this but no blood came out of the statue for me to drink :(

predalien47 1 year ago

ColdCypher 1 year ago
@ColdCypher lol. I wasn't just scrolling through pages. I saw Carlos' reply to you (which was on the first page) and it intigued me, so I checked out what you wrote. Your point is fucking dumb. What kind of idiot points out tedious pragmatic issues in a film that is clearly VERY surreal and abstract in style. You might as well point out such a fault in a anime fantasy movie. Get lost troll.
MrSalamander7 1 year ago
@MrSalamander7 Yes someone running his mouth intrigues you to the point of jumping on the loudmouth bandwagon. Says something about your character. Once again, you are showing the world how stupid you really are. That was EXACTLY my point fool! Even after reading it multiple times you and the other moron still dont get it. Yeah youre cool cause you called me a troll LOL. Take a hike. Dont bother replying please. This is over and was over when you responded.

@ColdCypher I don't even think you know what your point was. When I read your comments, I just wish stupidity was painful. Don't ever have kids.

why was the place bleeding
why did he drink the blood
and why they made Dracula a back story as the Impailor
Disneyobsesive 1 year ago
@Disneyobsesive
YouCantDeleteDenzelL 1 year ago
@Disneyobsesive 1.maybe the Red Cross' blood bank was there
2.it's and alternative to dialisis (blood cleansing
3.it's the other way around
4. it's impaler, not impailor
hope that helped

If I ever got up the guts enough to watch the movie I would, but I get waaaaaayyyyy too scared lol. The novel was fantastic in my opinion, and because you don't see as much of him in the novel as in the movie, it amplifies the malevolence of Dracula homself, whereas the movie almost desensitizes you.

well fortunately, you're a complete moron that probably likes pointless gory piece of shit vampire movies with weak plots and lame one dimensional characters so you're opinion doesn't really matter here :)

BUT NO!! he had to piss off the man and create an eternal monster instead.
kobra 2 years ago 58

I'm guessing that drinking the blood from the cross--the christ's blood?--is what gave him immortal life, and renouncing, cursing and swearing venegeance against god is what cursed his immortality with evil.

buzzcen 2 years ago
ShakespeareHamlet 2 years ago
I think you may be the only one that liked keanu in it.
buzzcen 2 years ago
I LOVE the part where Dracul stabs the cross and blood pours out, the camera panning back to a wide shot; all the while the music rises in intensity. brilliant.
ShakespeareHamlet 2 years ago
Though usually Keanu Reeves manages to screw up most movies, I think Anthony Hopkins, and most of all, Gary Oldmans preformances dampened him out :)
Cocarat206 2 years ago
Yeah i think at the end the romanian spelling wasnt that bad ,just when he begun reading the letter ,that kinda sucked.

Brilliant performance by Oldman throughout the film. He clearly outclasses everyone else..including Anthony Hopkins who in most other cases I would consider his equal.
taintedhistory2 2 years ago 2
what the??
when he says "god be praised I am victorius" he spells "londul fie laudart, am onvins"
when he should have spelled "lordul fie laudat, am invins"
and when Vlad Tepes (Dracula) reads that letter... im just DISGUSTED by the Romanian spelling of that letter!!!
"she has taken her own life her soul cannot be saved she is damned" is decently spelled
but "this is god's law" OMG it made me puke
just like all the spelling afterwards
Ponytailftw 2 years ago
by the way if you don't belive what i said about the romanian spellings check my channel... im from Romania
oh and Draculia (as the narrator spelled.. in fact its Dracula) was not a knight...he was something defined by an old word, and i dont know the english translations (and i don't mean the word "Vampire"
Ponytailftw 2 years ago
Could it have been a dialect, or maybe written in archaic Romanian? The spelling of many English words have changed over the centuries.
jjobie 2 years ago
im pretty sure it wasn't arhaic, because arhaic words differ a lot from nowadays's words...
when i said "Londul fie laudart, am onvins" i forgot to put a big L at Londul (in the original comment) because it means The Lord (God), and i am pretty sure that the spelling of that word at least didn't change at all...
and i don't understand what you mean by "Could it have been a dialect"... isn't Romanian language a dialect itself?
Ponytailftw 2 years ago
Ponytailftw, can you spell the other sentences Dracula say in romanian ? (and the correct sentence if it has faults in it). thanks a lot

umm.. some other time.. tommorow perhaps.. im kinda busy (i mean bored) right now

Another gem is Reeves pronouncing "Byyyyuudapest"... twice.
By sharp contract, the 1931 Dracula has perfect Hungarian in the opening scene.

Why in the hell did Coppola name this movie 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' when he knew damn well that he didn't have any interest in telling Stoker's story?
I'm not saying the movie is all that bad. I'm just saying it's a dick move on Coppola's part.
Fpiet 2 years ago 2
Coppola has a habit of putting the author's names into the title of his movies, if they're based on novels, and Universal owns the rights to the simple title "Dracula." Read the novel again, you fuck face. Coppola DID remain faithful to the novel, adding his own touch to it.
ShakespeareHamlet 2 years ago
Oh yeah, calling me a fuckface was so necessary for you to make your point wasn't it? Grow the hell up.
The "touch" (read: useless lovestory) that Coppola added was so contrary to the original novel that it negated the entire effort of adapting the novel. In Stoker's novel, the count is a monster, a force of nature, something more than just a character. He doesn't go through an emotional development because he doesn't need to.
Fpiet 2 years ago
It's a rule: Maske your protagonist sympathetic, if possible, and he did.
"Useless love story," my fucking ass. The love story, at least in my opinion, fleshes out an obscure line in the novel (part of which was retained for the movie): "Yes, I too can love. You yourselves can tell that from the past." it's never explained how or why Dracula is a vampire in the novel, whereas in the movie, it's fleshed out in all its glory.
ShakespeareHamlet 2 years ago
One little glitch in your theory there friend. Namely that in the novel, Dracula isn't the protagonist!
Fpiet 2 years ago
then, why is the novel called "Dracula," if he's not meant to be the protagonist? I've read the novel.
ShakespeareHamlet 2 years ago
Where does it say a novel can't be named after it's antagonist (which is what Dracula is)? Besides, 'Harker' or 'Murray' isn't exactly as catchy. is it?
Fpiet 2 years ago
I know that. But in a way, he IS the main character.
ShakespeareHamlet 2 years ago
I'm a little vague about what you mean by 'main character'.
If you think Dracula is a character we're supposed to sympathize with, doesn't it strike you as a bit odd that he's hardly physically in the novel? It's basically all the stuff Harker's journal at the beginning, after that he only pops up occasionally.
For the vast majority of the novel, Dracula is only this haunting presence, lurking in the edges of the narrative. More like a force of nature than a character.
Fpiet 2 years ago
still, his prescence IS felt in the novel.
ShakespeareHamlet 2 years ago
Of course it is, that's my whole point!
Fpiet 2 years ago
You can empathize with Dracula as well, as shown in the beginning of the film. He really loved Elisabeta. And Dracula DID NOT kill the baby, he gave it to his brides (a scene taken directly from the novel). I think changing his motivation from blood lust to romance really worked (at least, in my opinion). BEAUTIFUL movie. We'll never agree, so let's just stop discussing this. You're entitled to your opinion, I'm entitled to mine.
ShakespeareHamlet 2 years ago
Alrigtht then. Final statements:
1) Saying he didn't kill the baby is like saying: "I just shot him. It was the bullet that killed him' Utter bullshit. No excuses.
2) You can't empathize with Dracula in the novel. Coppola tried to change that in his film, but failed IMO.
3) I never said it was a bad movie. The cinematography and some of the acting is breathtaking. It's just the narrative that's a complete mess. Especially after Lucy gets staked. It all goes to hell from there.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Thank you, this is a point that i try to bring up constantly. There is freethinking, openminded, independent women, and then there are the women in this movie, who are, to put it eloquntly, a bunch of stank ass ho's. Thats my problem with this movie
