If all the knowledge base of today is to be Wiped out except the statements Dr.Carey made, then in a 1000 years, humanity will be worshipping Snakes, Fearing ghouls, the hour glass will be the emblem of nations and Carey will become the Prophet of humanity.
Astronomy is not one of the best sciences to connect to the "horror" atmosphere. Space is vastly lifeless, so attempts and creepy astronomy rely exclusively on anthropomorphism and pareidolia, and astronomy has more jargon, resulting in the guy in this vid, as another comment put it, ruining the atmosphere by sounding like a nerd.
Astronomy should leave the "science tapping into the Halloween spirit" to the biological and human sciences. THEY can get creepy without a HINT of cheesiness
hey cmon guys, its just a bit of fun. yeah its cheesy, yeah its childish and yeah its more than a little patronising.
but lets forget the 80% nerd viewership of this series and generously accommodate the rest of the world population of intelligent people who remain to be inspired and convinced of the thrill of science and knowledge.
Based on most of the comments I see, it seems like you people have NO sense of humor whatsoever. Stop being so bitchy about the superstition that is used to present this video, people.
This has been dumbed-down so much it's bordering on the illiterate. For goodness sake try to avoid this kind of childishness: the subject matter is interesting all by itself.
Personally I prefer science to stay like it used to be. Serious, straight to the point and away from superstition... For example: Carl Sagan's voyage: Cosmos.
Please in future make informative videos useful for adults, and not only suitable for teens.
I don't think I've ever heard a more cartoonish set of ideas from astronogers, and that's saying a lot, they usually have some pretty far-out ideas that bear no resemblance at all to reality.
In embracing discoveries, we are in aw and fascination. Facing fears? Cute take on the theme of forming and dying stars and seeing snakes. Entertaining.
As always brilliant composite images from the Spitzer folks. However, it shows that an actual astronaut travelling to other stars will actually seldomly have comparable views during the voyage, unless a Spitzer-like instrument with lots of computer power is on board as well. :)
@teemuruskeepaa Just because you associate terror with a group of people does not mean that every person is without the ability to use words correctly.
@kenandkids Still the title has a hot potato in its hand and probably will have people clicking on the video because they think this is about torture of sentient beings. The connotation has power and should be consciously avoided.
Why terror? That points to fundamentalist thinking, categorizing people into facile and simplist categories to create a sense of stability. Surely you as natural scientists are able to see people as they really are?
@teemuruskeepaa You got the wrong meaning of the word: "terror" in this case is sort of a feeling, like being horrified or shocked (ever watched a very scary movie as a kid?); in this case it has nothing to do with terrorism as you understood it I think.

If this is the way documentaries are going, I'll quit watching altogether.
This is no better than trying to mend football with astronomy.
