Just a quick look on Wikipedia shows that firearms without certificates were illegal way back in 1920. And automatic firearms were banned in the 30s. Handguns are banned today.

Gun ownership was and still is legal in the UK but you have to have a license and they're difficult to get hold of (always have been). It's possible to look up the regulations and everything but for Alex Jones to claim that the 1997 Firearms Act (I assume that's what he's talking about) was the first instance of gun control in the UK is total rubbish. As for the claim that the UK has or had a higher rate of firearm-related homicides than the US is totally untrue. Talk about delusion.

The way Jones acted there was completely childish and ignorant. They had a perfectly civilized conversation, one that did well to show how two people as different as Chomsky and Jones can find meaningful common ground on deep social issues. Then, when Chomsky says something a tad disagreeable about guns, Jones completely turns on him. He didn't even have the decency to say any of that New World Order shit or the ad hominem insults to Chomsky while he was still on the phone. Very disappointing...

Chomsky, as I see it, probably predicted where Alex were going, as even I did... and just combined saving his own image by not getting caught in a net of low-level shit-talking (going down to one of Alex's levels which I think is too low of a standard for Chomsky under any circumstance) and probably also being just a little upset; probably "regretted" getting on the show, meeting Alex where he and his show is, etc, and then still get treated this way. What's so astounding about this turn by Jones is just how complimentary Chomsky had been before this disagreement on the facts about guns. When asked "What's the solution?" by Jones, Chomsky responded saying "Something like what you're doing..."

Gun ownership was and still is legal in the UK but you have to have a license and they're difficult to get hold of (always have been). It's possible to look up the regulations and everything but for Alex Jones to claim that the 1997 Firearms Act (I assume that's what he's talking about) was the first instance of gun control in the UK is total rubbish. As for the claim that the UK has or had a higher rate of firearm-related homicides than the US is totally untrue. Talk about delusion.

The way Jones acted there was completely childish and ignorant. They had a perfectly civilized conversation, one that did well to show how two people as different as Chomsky and Jones can find meaningful common ground on deep social issues. Then, when Chomsky says something a tad disagreeable about guns, Jones completely turns on him. I cant believe it but for some reason I actualy remember the video of the government cutting up the guns and it was in Canada. I have no proof at all but, all I can say is I do remember it. As far as Jones goes...... He seemed to me to be trying to covince himself/his audience that he REALLY did get the better of Noam.

I felt like I was on the same page with both Alex and Chomsky until Alex had to resort to 'spanking'. How pathetic. Jones' manifesting illusions of grandiose behavior saying he's twice as smart with his hands behind his back. I don't see Jones creating revolutions in linguistics or any field for that matter. Further, how brave of Jones to slam Chomsky only after they were done talking so Chomsky couldn't really speak for himself. I'm embarrassed that I just purchased some dvd's from Jones.

@somedump yeah, i thought so too. Alex tried to say bye to Chomsky only to find out that Chomsky hung up already without saying bye. He just said "we may disagree on that" and then hung up. It seems like Chomsky is upset too. At least Alex tried to stay polite to his face?

Chomsky, as I see it, probably predicted where Alex were going, as even I did... and just combined saving his own image by not getting caught in a net of low-level shit-talking (going down to one of Alex's levels which I think is too low of a standard for Chomsky under any circumstance) and probably also being just a little upset; probably "regretted" getting on the show, meeting Alex where he and his show is, etc, and then still get treated this way. At least I feel that way.

@weejockpoopongmcplop This interview - esp. his slam on Chomsky & stupid focus on their differences over gun rights (hardly the most important facet of int'l politics or economic structure) - sours my opinions of Jones severely. US Crime rates ARE higher than that in many other nation states in Europe - with causes quite unrelated to our gun policies. He then attributes any diff. of opinion between himself & others as intentional adherence of his opponents to the dark hand of the Global Elite.

Chomsky patiently talked with Jones using facts. I felt embarrassed when I listened to Alex Jones' erratic, factually incorrect, rant.... A quick search on Google brought up numerous statistics that supported Chomsky. But even if he wasn't right, Alex Jones should not have attacked his character with such idiotic jabbering.

And our founding fathers were certainly not elitist - that's why they 1) wrote slavery into the constitution, 2) established the electoral college to prevent the masses from voting in candidates against the will of the wealthy power brokers, and 3) initially forbade non-propertied men from voting. Chomsky never has claimed that Communism & Anarchism are similar models.

Obviously Prof. Chomsky is not up to speed on gun laws and Alex is; Noam's day job at MIT requires 50 more IQ points than Alex's and he is an elderly man.
