  • so this is where bill got his humour from lol

  • How the F does Paul not know who Eric Johnson is (@6:20). A top 10 guitarist I just lost some musical respect for Mr Shaffer

  • I don't believe this 'sorry' bullshit thing that Letterman does, but I'm glad I can watch now what he banned.

  • Dave manned up for the man. Dave didn't make that call, the CBS big wigs and sponsors did. He took the fall and did it with class.

  • They should've been familiar with Eric Johnson @ 6:20

  • fearless...like her son. {sun}

  • Why the idolatry..? As Bruce Lee stated, although I don't worship him (shouldn't idolize...), people want an idol. People should appreciate leaders, but become their won unique leader, & not idolize others, making them deities.

  • @dirtywhiteboymma

I agree. That's exactly the sort of mentality Bill was always talking about. There's a fucking cult of personality going on amongst fan circles. He was great and very relevant but there's no need to call him a "god" or an "American Hero". Fuck those sheep.

  • @NickNorie15 Yeah, sounds like you have it down. I see "SO" many, idolizing someone, yet missing the much more important message they bring to us, & "THAT" is what made them special, not so much themselves, & what toilet paper they use, or whatever miniscule issues gossip rags focus upon. Nice to hear from you, 4 certain.

  • @dirtywhiteboymma

    Agreed.

  • This breaks my heart. Dammit I miss Bill.

  • She is just dynamite!

  • i wish i could hear what bill has to say about his mom appearing on letterman.

  • If there is a "heaven" Bill is smiling and having a drink & a smoke ;)

  • @checkurbrainfly With Hendrix on harp.

  • Bill's mother is a class act, full respect to her

  • Letterman is fucking loser

  • @PhillSpark - Like you?

  • daves a standup guy

  • Eric Johnson has a grammy damnit.

  • This is the worst kind of manipulation. Mary Hicks is a great person and as his mother and supporter would have been cajoled into this bullshit exercise out of loss and devotion to Bill. To all you schmucks who believe in the altruism behind the Letterman self promotional machine, you have completely missed the point of Bill Hicks life and perspective.I have no doubts Bill Hicks would spit vile all over this utterly reprehensible revisionist approach to Lettermans measured 1993 decision.

  • @cattycakes64 No matter a guess at this point as long as she took something positive from it, think lets all we could hope for a mother whom lost such,u know?

  • @scottielong333 I'm not talking at all about Mary Hicks and yes scottielong I hope for Mary there was some closure and an easing of her pain. But this was an orchestrated media exercise on Lettermans part that was undertaken to revise his previous censorship of Hicks. A decision based according to Bill Hicks on the shows advertisers. As Bill himself said he thought he lived in the USA but he realised he lived in the United States of Advertising. Nuff said.

  • She is AMAZING. Such quiet, unassuming dignity :-)

  • you were truley great Mr Bill Hicks may u rest in peace

  • Paul Shaffer will never hear Hendrix on harp.

  • @BarefootArizona coming from a barefoot guy from Arizona heheh

  • @Eugeniuswv You should try it dude. It works for the Lion

  • @BarefootArizona haha, I'll give it a shot.. I'm from West Virginia.. Would fit right in here :)

  • @Eugeniuswv I started out on grass even though they say you should start on concrete. It's gonna hurt for a few weeks, but you just gotta work through it

  • "A lesser man in Lettermans postion would never have admitted he was wrong."

    Leno

  • Search for Eric Johnson. Bill's mom is hipper than Dave.

  • Letterman is a class act.

    Just like Mrs. Hicks.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • Cliffs of dover, along with a million other great songs....DUMBASS...And that retard calls himself a band leader...But what do expect from a guy that wrote the song IT'S RAINING MEN...

  • lol Schaffer should know Eric Johnson..what a burnout.

  • Mindless lemming audience just listening for punch lines.

  • retards dont even know who eric johnson? One of the most prolific guitarists of the last 10 years. Wow , idiots.

  • Noble et sympha.

  • what i really want know is what she thought of bills "trying to suck your own cock" routine. and did she suspect what he was getting up to in his room.that had to be the funniest routine i have never seen repeated again on tv! or even in the transcripts in his book.

  • What a lovely woman

  • DOH! Eric Johnson is a world-class guitarist...he's a frickin master...one of the all-time greats...and Paul Schaffer doesn't know of him?? That's...just...sad...

  • i never knew bill appreciated eric johnson. eric johnson is a great guitar player

  • "Dave, You were a dick." Love, Ms Hicks.

  • i love his mum !

  • If you're as clueless as Letterman and the bandleader are about Eric Johnson I sincerely advise you to have a listen.

  • MARY OWNS.

  • my god you can see where he got it from... what a lady xxx

  • Eric Clapton maybe?

  • i wonder if she was referring to THE eric johnson.

  • @autologic04 well Eric Johnson was born in Texas, so yeah I reckon it was the genius guitarist! How the hell Schaeffer didn't recognise the name I'll never know...

  • Mary, the mother of the messiah

  • @supertito123

that's blasphemy - he was born by a virgin!

  • @supertito123 She is one cool ma

  • A lesser man in Lettermans postion would never have admitted he was wrong.

Ego & Prides a powerful thing at the level he's operating on.

Class act,as we say in England "Nicel'y done".

    So I'll say this.

    "Nicel'y done Mr Letterman,,Nicel'y done."

  • @TrentVenture or as we say in australia "good on ya' mate"!

  • @TrentVenture Why would he be wrong? He made a decision of a TV dummy, and it was probably right. Hes only exploiting Bills story now.

  • @TrentVenture letterman is a douche

  • @TrentVenture What's with the apostrophes? o.O

  • ALGUIEN PODRIA TRADUCIRLO AL ESPAÑOL??? (TO SPANISH)

  • when I think of how young bill hicks was taking away from us, I actually weep. The man was amazing, he made his own act, he was a philosopher AND a comedian and the two worked so well. I would love to hear bill hicks view on the corrupt world we live in at the moment, however sadly he was taking away from us far to early. As he said himself, why do we take the good people and the little demons run amock? RIP bill hicks

  • New respect for Letterman

  • I can see the family humor.

  • Bill's mom is such a cute, sassy woman! What a great woman; showing up and giving Letterman her 2 cents in such a classy way! Not to mention, she mothered one of the greatest minds America will know...

  • @BrewToob

You already posted this stupid shit under the Part 1 clip.

  • Comment removed

  • They should have had Eric Johnson on the show that night!

  • eric johnson is a virtuoso blues-rock and fusion guitarist, he's very big now

  • horrible bastard! should have went on air when it was made simple

  • All hail the possum queen!!!

  • Letterman did a great job here, he took more blame than he probably deserves and it's clear he regrets what happened with his friend Bill Hicks

  • Comment removed

  • @BrewToob i was just saying the blame's not totally with him, at least he's not leno

  • @whitepanther84 fair enough...sorry for the sarcasm.

  • @BrewToob haha no problem

  • Bill was simply ahead of his time in terms of social commentary and critique.

  • How did Paul or anyone in his band not know who Eric Johnson is?

  • @thegorn68 in part 3 of this video the band plays "Cliffs of Dover" when Bill comes out. Pretty sure Paul was joking around here.

  • "ok, what else you wanns know?"

    What an great lady

  • I feel like this is kind of significant - with regard to Bill's message. His words, his criticisms are even more relevant than they were then. This tribute/atonement serves Bill's message better here than if he'd never been censored - the world likely would have forgotten all about Bill and his words. He resonates now - we need someone to pick up where he left off. The world and this nation in particular, needs to hear Bill's message.

  • @lazlounderhill good call....well said

  • About the Letterman's audience: like Bill said "I feel like a UFO. Cos just like UFOs I too am appearing in obscure southern towns in front of handfulls of hillbillies. And just like UFOs these hillbillies find me equally incomprehensible."

  • Lost of respect for letterman. minus respect for those tards in the audeince

  • Cool old lady.

  • i wonder if the musician bill asked his parents to see was actually 'daniel johnston', an austin staple... lol god she's terrific!! :) you could tell through all of bill's comments, he did love his family. and it's great that dave hosted this 'reckoning' or whatever that - well, bill deserved to have this much as posthumous honor. he still isn't regularly featured on comedy central retrospectives or anything... the time has come.;0the masses need to be able to view the world through bill's eyes.

  • @nyokoSalome Eric Johnson is a great gutiar player. He did a lot of instramental albums. I saw him open for Rush once in 1991. Look him up.

  • i wonder if the musician bill asked his parents to see was actually 'daniel johnston', an austin staple...

  • i am a huge fan of bill, i dont watch much tv and i really despise american tv but i tell you what, lettermans alright.

  • @LegalizeIsrael Exactly what I thought

  • mitch hedberg

  • Mitch Hedberg

  • Mitch Hedberg

  • Boy her voice started breaking up and I thought she was going to start crying. Then she laid into David one well-deserved blow after another to where she almost seemed let down when they went to the tape of Bill.

  • I was born in 1993...man

  • I had NO IDEA Letterman EVER tried to make amends for what happened. I've resented him for 10 years! I'm choked the fuck up. Letterman clearly needs to feel redemption and I think it's obvious that his ending on a bad note with Bill has fucked him up a bit ALL these years. 4 DAYS AFTER BILLS DEATH CARROT TOP WON TOP AMERICAN COMEDY AWARD! I actually feel a sense of peace seeing part one and now watching this. Thank you for finally taking accountability David.

  • At least he admitted he was wrong

  • Eric Johnson <3

  • where did he get the balls to invite her?

  • Yes Letterman fucked up by pulling Bill's act off his show in 1993... but if you fuck up then the least you can do is try to make amends, and at least Dave tried to do that with this show...

  • someone tell me what letterman did, just cancel his act?

  • @MrFan32 The routine was taped. After watching it, Letterman had it cut from the broadcast.

  • @MrFan32 Its because The Letterman show (back then not sure if its now) a very pro life show and Bill made a long joke about how stupid pro lifers. That is why it was cut, his last show was cut.

  • Dave SHAKES HER HAND?

  • Lol... I love that old woman. It's no wonder Bill turned out to be the way he did. And it's a good thing he did. She seems like she was a great mother.

  • ERIC JOHNSON!!! YOU fuckin retard!!

  • Letterman did a very upstanding thing here.

  • @5jerry1 Letterman did an upstanding thing here but if he wasn't such a coward in the first place he wouldn't have to apologize.

  • @Flipper79able

True. At least he did try to make it right though. He obviously felt bad for what he did.

  • @5jerry1 I dunno call me cynical but this is happening fifteen years after Bill's death. Cutting his performance is infamous in stories of unfair censorship, something the Letterman show has its fair share of (look at Harvey Pekar). From a human perspective all he's done is attempt to right a wrong, this puts him morally back on mutual ground. From a television/marketing perspective, 15years after Bill Hicks death and the world finally gets to see the Letterman performance. Again call me cynical

  • @MrDenham attempting to right a wrong is a damn fine thing to do. Ever do a wrong? Attempt to right it every time?

  • @mathnawi21 Not saying it weren't just I'm not 100 percent convinced that's the motivation.

  • @mathnawi21 Yes I have.

  • @5jerry1 Agreed. I marvel at the blinkered idiots taking Letterman to task for doing the right thing.

  • letterman you cunt fucker

  • [snore]

  • Mary Hicks - brass balls award. Thank you Mrs Hicks for the gift you have given free thinking ppl around the world.

  • @cbinsyd Ah-HEM! Brass TITS - thanks. But in spirit, I agree 100% :)

  • I can't believe that Paul Shaffer has never heard of the great Austin guitar player, Eric Johnson.

  • this is kind of heart warming.

  • WHAT A GREAT LADY!! LOL LOL

  • Mrs.Hicks wasnt afraid to slam dave for what he did.Dieing or not dieing, dave had no reason to yank Bill whatsoever! I think dave was jealous of Bill because his intelligence & comedy was the greatest & it obviously intimidated dave.If Bill were alive today,He would be the most famous comedian on tv.I think he would most certainly be sitting in Lenos seat.We would be watching "Late Night with Bill Hicks" for damned sure!! Bill was 1000 x's funnier than anyone else! R.I.P. Bill. We love you!!!

  • @SmokinMo11 haha unlikely he once said he would never do a talk show.

  • Letterman is taking a lot of heat on this page, but I give him credit for falling on the proverbial sword. He said that not airing the performance was his decision. Lots of other entertainers would have put all the blame on the network and the producers.

  • I love Mary Hicks! There's no bullshitting with her, just like her son.

  • Seems like a lovely woman, Bill Hicks' mother.

  • How come most folks on here bitch about Letterman but not the show's producer Robert Morton?

  • Eric Johnson is a very well known American guitarist- cant believe they didnt even know him!! schaeffer also??

  • He shoulc jut come out and say it, "I'm sorry for being an asshole"

  • BIll Hicks was an Eric Johnson fan - I've got even more respect for him now.

  • I love her accent. .. Letterman looks like kind of an asshole by doing this but at least he does not interrupt her as much as he does most of his guests.

  • Gotta give Letterman credit for finally admitting he made a mistake, we all make mistakes. 15 years late, but he did it.

Rest in Lunacy Bill, your legacy lives on in a generation of disenfranchised youth.

  • funny mom funny son like the root forms the fruit he's mom is proud & bill will always where the crown.

  • What the fuck you doing letterman? Invite an old lady to your mainstream show, with the shit eating crowd who laughs at everything, while manipulating this lady to reveal more shit your crowd and fat producers can eat? Shit man, you just lost a fuckload of street cred there

  • really wish Bill was around today, he'd have a fucking field day with all the stupid bullshit happening. ^.^ sure id be pissing myself lol now to listen to "Your Kids are not Special"

  • Damn, she's as funny as he is!

  • Bill's Mum is fantastic. She's so relaxed and funny in the interview.

  • classy woman he definitely got some sense of humor from her

  • classy woman

  • Hicks set a great example for truly "standing up" to power and prejudices. His mom shines and David Letterman shows himself to be a prince of a man who has come into his own as a great comic himself over the years, always funny and not afraid to speak out in this day when so many comics water themselves down with phony, cowardly political equivalency.

  • bill hicks's mom rocks!!!!

  • RIP BILL , THANKS FOR MAKING ME LAUGH SO MUCH.

  • Eric Johnson is a super good blues guitar player Dave :P

  • Damned decent of Dave to do this. Anyone who thinks otherwise. . . well, I'm sorry for you. You've probably never made a mistake to have to apologize for ... Lemme know your names so's I can recommend you for sainthood. . .

  • @BeakerArk i never betrayed a man who spoke the truth

  • Comment removed

  • Decent of Letterman. I wouldn't have expected it.

So maybe whatsisface can apologize someday for pretending not to have heard of Eric Johnson. Twit.

  • @KnowKnot Being a musician and not having heard of Eric Johnson is kinda ridiculous. Or just retarded.

  • Letterman's ok, the real assholes never apologize.

  • @youngThrashbarg :) Righto! good way to sort them out, eh?

  • Hahaha Bill's mother is so fucking adorable

  • Why are people hating on letterman on this? He's come out and apologised properly to her and tried to do the right thing and he showed the footage at last. Everyone makes mistakes, i think it's good he said sorry for what he did.

  • BILL HICKS & GEORGE CARLIN FTW!

  • credit to Letterman for fessing up and showing the footage.

  • very classy lady! did bill very proud!

  • what a fuckin ass kissing

people always mourn and say "oh what a great guy"

bullshit if u actually meant it u wouldnt do stuff u regret

  • i'll tell u wat u can see wer bill got some of his sense of humour from!

  • Honestly I feel like Letterman was righting a wrong. Can you ever see a cocksucker like Leno admitting he was wrong for allowing something to be cut? It was wrong to cut this but it took some balls to admit it on T.V.

  • too f######ing late now in the united state of advertising.. and censorship still abounds even the bbc is biased

  • Letterman-

    A corporate American SPUNKBUCKET!!!!!!!!

  • Wow. Paul Schaffer didn't know who Eric Johnson is. Mary Hicks seems like a great person.

  • @viciousbloodbath I cringed when Shaffer didn't know him. Christ.

  • Why did they get his mum on? Bill Hicks' parents fucking HATED his comedy!!

  • @Davidbensonxyz : Bill's mother was given the tape by the network.
