  • I have the same car with 175,000 miles and it's still running good.

  • @daleytokur How many miles did it have when you bought it ?

  • I just rode in one today, and I was surprised that it sat higher than our TrailBlazer. The particular one I rode in was a 2004 AWD V-8.

  • this car sucks i owned one for 6 years and the transmission broke 4 times and the engine broke once at 120000 miles but everything else is good in this truck this one is exactly the same as mine

  • @isauro27 Yeah, The 5 speed auto was terrible & the 4.6L V8 had its issues in this. For some reason, Ford did something different to the 4.6L in Explorer/Mountaineer where it had chain tensioner issues causing a loud rattle & later an engine lockup. I was surprised this Mountaineer sounded perfect for 99K, so I guess they may have worked the engine already.

The newer 3 Valve V8 in the 2006 Model with the 6 speed auto fair much more reliable. The V6 still had the crappy 5 speed

  • Ford did a good job with the trans. and gearing on this one; I raced the 02 V8 mountaineer vs. my friend's grand marquis-which on paper has a much better power to weight ratio, yet i won easily. I test drove the 292hp mountaineer, I only liked the handling/steering and throttle response better than the older model but the acceleration didn't appear any better. The trans on the newer model took forever to downshift at full throttle and i've read many terrible consumer reviews on that 6 speed.

  • @373axle

Gearing on these old 5 speeds were good but the tranny has been so problematic. Aside from the tranny, even the torque converters used in these were terrible. When the tranny is flawless it works well. But The 6 speed is still the better transmission despite its early quirks.

  • @Intechdude300 Yea, I've read many real bad reviews on the 5-speed as well, that it needs replacement early on, but the amazing thing is we never had to replace the trans on our mountaineer yet, and we never had any problems with it, one of the only things there's not to like is that it hunts for gears sometimes at low speeds. I will agree that the 6-speed is better though if it functions properly....What about the torque converter issues?

  • @373axle

Havent seen or heard of issues with torque converters on the 6 speed yet. But its still an issue even on the 2008 5 speed. It would whine on acceleration, sometimes reverse would be dead, & sometimes the torque converter is s bad & whiney that it actually doesnt let the engine idle .

Even a 2008 Sport Trac V6 I drove & posted here with the same 5 speed even made a brief slip from 2-3...

Seems you've been quite lucky with your truck tho.

  • @Intechdude300 Ok, have you ever driven the aviator? I've read almost nothing but praises on that truck from both automotive journalists and people who bought/drove them. I wonder if they use the same torque converter as on the 02-05 mountaineer. Also, I posted my first comment without reading what cars you own/drive in your profile. I wasn't trying to thrash talk or anything when I said the mountaineer won against the marquis. I still thought it was a smooth, comfortable car.

  • @373axle

Aviator uses the Same Exact 5 Speed & Torque converter despite having the more powerful DOHC Intech V8 Engine.

My dad uses the Marquis, I use the 02 Continental. I once did a 0-120 vid in a 2001 back in 2006 which I do have posted.

  • If I had to buy an explorer/mountaineer, it'd have to be a V8 model. I hate the 4.0 V6.

  • @mkm230

preferably the 2006 yr cause of the 6 spd & extra HP

  • @Intechdude300 yepyep true

  • Someone I know has a Mountaineer with 110K on it exactly like this one, only differences: hers has rear DVD, hers is Dark Blue/Light Blue on the exterior color.

  • A relative of mine once had a Mountaneer similar to this one, except it was not AWD. I liked it, but they have since traded it in for a Ford Escape.

  • Cool id love to buy one of these

  • What do you think about Ford killing Mercury? Will you miss it? Do you think Ford should have tried to save it?

  • @xoquixxoqafxo

Well, I dont miss it at all in the form it has been last 30+ years. Had it of been like it was in the 50's, 60's, & some early 70's where the brand had exclusivity, then I'd miss it. I honestly thought Ford was going to use Mercury as a gateway to intro more European cars. But its not necessary really. Lincoln will now get the cash, maybe the brand will now transform & have exclusive product. So they did right not saving it I think.
