I wonder... how about making a slow motion vid with gun bullet travel through baloon full of mercury. I am curious because if given a dense enaugh liquid and high velocity the bullet should react as if hitting a solid object. Would love to see if it deforms in moment of impact.
I just thought of a cool slomo shot. have a bullet travel between two charged electrical wires, and watch the spark jump to and from the bullet while in flight.
I was concerned for you.... but not as concerned as I was for my lakes and streams... Please dispose of this properly when you've had your fun. mercury scares the shit out of me.
@Festivejelly Not true. The metal itself may not be as dangerous as people make out if in direct contact with the skin or ingested (it's poorly absorbed unless it is a mercury salt). However mercury vapour IS readily absorbed by the body and even minor doses can cause adverse symptoms. Where there's mercury there is mercury vapour.
@iexusuxei Salts are much more toxic, but organic hg compounds win by far. Dimethyl mercury is a colorless, innocuous looking liquid that is readily absorbed by the body and absolutely deadly even in trace amounts and short exposure time. Nightmare substance.

Does mercury leave a toxic residue behind?Example-if you poured liquid mercury into a glass then emptied the mercury out, would the glass need to be sanitized before using for drinking? It leave any residue or traces behind? Thanks for your or anyone elses answer in advance
@94vettelover2 Oh yes for sure. If you ahve ever put mercury in a glass, it's best to just simply throw the glass out. ANY small trace of mercury can lead to drastic consequences including seizures and cancer. Mercury is difficult to clean and if it has been in a class or something you use for food it is best to just not use it again
@94vettelover2 I think it depends of the container itself, but as @taofledermaus said, It's never safe to use any container that has been in contact with a toxic element!
@kalloused the pressure in the mercury would make it difficult or impossible to swim in. You could sorta wiggle around in it up to maybe 15-45 cm deep, but after that, the pressure would be too much.
Because of this, I'm thinking it would make a good bed though — far superior to a water mattress I think.
when my parents were children their science teacher used to put it on their desks for them to fool around with. they are fine. I am fine, its only long term exposure and or ingestion that is deadly.
@squat224 Exactly. Some people seem to believe that just being in close proximity to it for a few seconds is going to kill them, and some people think it gives you cancer. There's a lot of hysteria out there about mercury.
@Aegeanhawk The splash is actually pretty interesting and I edited out a lot of that, I was trying to keep the video from being too long. I'll upload a more detailed video showing that.
@FuzzyDicePimp It really is. I edited out a lot of that too so I'll upload another video in the next day or so showing more of the aftermath of the splash. Thanks for stopping by!
Tao where are you getting this Mercury, I looked for a supplier but the cost is usually over $100.00 a lbs in most cases. I have an experiment that requires a large quantity however its financially impossible for me to acquire the necessary amount at the prices I've seen...
@Prometheus203 I honestly had no idea what the cost of this stuff is. For years I salvaged it from mercury contactors at a plant I worked at. I'd remove the mercury from these large relays prior to disposing the main unit. There was a few oz in each one. My boss would let me have the stuff, it was easier for him to do that than pay to dispose it.
I always wanted to take something like a fastfood cup and fill it with water and ice. Then take the lid off and as its pouring out take a picture so I can see it in the air. This is much better though.
@paintballdude902 I almost cringe when I upload these videos because I end up getting a lot of comments from "experts" lecturing me on how I am going to die of cancer or whatever. lol.
@ImpendingLee you mean the splash of the water when a block of magnesium hits it? I know you mean one of the cutable metals that make boom when they hit water and are stored in oil, but magnesium is not one of them :P they make motors for racing car out of magnesium, would be funny to see that race when it rains
@DeanMalenko I stand corrected. I was so eager to share this that i forgot my facts. I meant a chunk of magnesium that is set on fire, the water that is either poured on it or the magnesium itself thrown into the water while burning. So yes, you are absolutely right.
@ImpendingLee hehe I know that feeling :) and yes I agree, burning magnesium in water would be cool. Scubadivers already use magnesium torches to see underwater. Though on a small scale I would think it would simply look like a jacuzzi with all the bubbling and light :P
@ivakpavlov he actually explained in one of his videos that he got it from where he used to work i think. pretty sure that's it anyway, working off my memory right now lol
