The owners of these aircraft enjoy the same freedom to choose how to use their machines as anybody else. A few choose to race them. 95% or more of warbirds are displayed in museums or "gently" flown, only a few fly high performance.

It is the difference between "looking at life" in a museum, and "living life" at a race or airshow.

I searched for the listing "P-38 Lightnings Formation", and found it is no longer coming up on the searches. Only the Lee Greenwood musical version remains. I love the throaty sound of the twin Allisons and am sorry to see YT has deleted that version of your clip.
I bristle at the song because my grandfather flew a P38. I spent over 700 days in a US prison falsely convicted. I fought to defend my innocence against the state, and finally won my appeal , but for me, the flag does not stand for freedom. I've seen what the US justice system and prison state really is from the inside. It was sensory deprivation, noisy, humid, cold, hot, torture. My grandfather flew for the US only because it was the lesser of two evils, not for any bullshit patriotism.
Very cool footage. The Glacier Girl was discovered frozen inside a glacier about 60 ft from the surface in solid ice. The history channel had a show about salvaging this P38, a P 61 from snake infested jungle and a B29 from the slopes of Alaska. If you get the chance watch how they got the P 38 out of the Ice tomb. The "lost squadron" was 6 P-38s and 2 B-17s. The first plane explored was B-17 "Big Stoop" which was found to be badly crushed by the weight and movement of the ice and was left. (Still think it should be recovered.) Glacier Girl was recovered next. Photos were used to locate the other planes, and other teams are planning to eventually get the other P-38s---more Glacier Girls hopefully.

My mother was a flight instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and taught our fighter and bomber pilots how to fly. She could fly the P-38 Lightning and this song, combined with the mighty P-38, brought tears to my eyes, as it does many others.

I was just at the P-38 annual meeting in Williams, Az. It was said that there are 7 flying, the seventh is in Austria with Red Bull. they were talking about the other six being at the Sacramento air show for a once in a lifetime show.

IMHO, the P-38 Lightning was the best Fighter Aircraft that spanned all of WWII. It's sad that at the end of the war that when brand new, shiny Lightnings would land in the Philippines they would take off their radios and armaments, then bulldoze them into a ditch and then hack them to pieces with axes.
How I wish I could travel back in time and grab a half-dozen of those planes.

@TJDOZIER1 That would be highly surprising...Did you count the one (or two) Lightnings that were/are at Tillamook, Oregon? Jeff crashed one and tragically died, but they still have one that flies.... In the past 20 years, I don't think there were ever only 3 flying....
My information is correct according to those who own and fly the only 3 P-38's at the time the video was made. The loss of Jeff Ethel and the P-38 from Tillamook was many years ago. There are now 7 airworthy and 6 that fly.
@TJDOZIER1 Like I said, even after Jeff's crash there was still one there; one in England, the Chino one, at least one CAF, Glacier Girl....I wrote some for "Lightning Strikes," (the P-38 Nat Assoc pub) and I can't recall when it ever got down to 3...

Not to be rude but it more or less boils down to first come first serve in the nation naming department. What I hate about the naming in America (lol) is the use of other countries city names for our own, yet not pronouncing them correctly. The owners/pilots of these aircraft all thought this soundtrack was, lets see if I can remember their comments, oh yea, comments like, great, fantastic, very emotional, etc. Or the P-38 combat pilot whose eyes "leaked" when he watched it with me, and who said thank you for making such an outstanding video. The many handshakes I get for making this video when people meet me at Planes of Fame, where this was filmed. But for others, I made the same video with engine sound. Watch either and enjoy.

I remember reading about a crash-landed P-38 in Greenland. The pilot ran out of gas while ferrying his on its way to England. They'd left it on the ice. After fifty years, it was 100+feet under the ice. They managed to locate it, & dug down to it. It'd be cool as snot if one of these flying, was that restored bird.
I'm not having a go at the lyrics, just the fact that it sounds lame. Nothing wrong with national pride and I have a lot of American friends, although I will draw the line at feeling 'gratitude' for the USA. Not a single US soldier died 'defending' NZ. I think there is also something about it on the wikipedia F-82 page.
It will be something to see.

My mother was a flight instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and taught our fighter and bomber pilots how to fly. She could fly the P-38 Lightning and this song, combined with the mighty P-38, brought tears to my eyes, as it does many others.

I was just at the P-38 annual meeting in Williams, Az. It was said that there are 7 flying, the seventh is in Austria with Red Bull. they were talking about the other six being at the Sacramento air show for a once in a lifetime show.

IMHO, the P-38 Lightning was the best Fighter Aircraft that spanned all of WWII. It's sad that at the end of the war that when brand new, shiny Lightnings would land in the Philippines they would take off their radios and armaments, then bulldoze them into a ditch and then hack them to pieces with axes.
How I wish I could travel back in time and grab a half-dozen of those planes.

My information is correct according to those who own and fly the only 3 P-38's at the time the video was made. The loss of Jeff Ethel and the P-38 from Tillamook was many years ago. There are now 7 airworthy and 6 that fly.

Not to be rude but it more or less boils down to first come first serve in the nation naming department. What I hate about the naming in America (lol) is the use of other countries city names for our own, yet not pronouncing them correctly. Its almost as if someone was too dull to think of an original name, and to compound the ineptitude, people start pronouncing the names wrong. oh well, lead in the water flows worldwide.

The owners/pilots of these aircraft all thought this soundtrack was, lets see if I can remember their comments, oh yea, comments like, great, fantastic, very emotional, etc. Or the P-38 combat pilot whose eyes "leaked" when he watched it with me, and who said thank you for making such an outstanding video. The many handshakes I get for making this video when people meet me at Planes of Fame, where this was filmed. But for others, I made the same video with engine sound. Watch either and enjoy.

I remember reading about a crash-landed P-38 in Greenland. The pilot ran out of gas while ferrying his on its way to England. They'd left it on the ice. After fifty years, it was 100+feet under the ice. They managed to locate it, & dug down to it. It'd be cool as snot if one of these flying, was that restored bird.
