  • Nothing wrong with the interviewer - Jolie is fucking with her right off the bat - blaming it on 'bad journalism' and other interviewer's 'stupid questions' - and then when the interviewer gives her a chance to set the record straight her response is 'um, i don't understand...' -CUT! Just answer the f'ing question! Poor interviewer is visibly uncomfortable. 'I'm in the ROCK SECTION. I've always been in the ROCK SECTION. Whatever. I'm in the Rock Section. I don't care.' Yuck.

  • what would be odd would be if she talked with a deliberately contrived accent. Most singers use different accents when they sing, she just has vowel modification cranked a couple of notches higher than some, because it's a sound that feels right to her I'd guess. I like the sound of it too, so I think she's right.

  • So she actually doesn't have a strong accent? Hmm. That makes it even weirder. Not sure about that?

  • I thought of a new category -- Emo Folk

  • Must do better than " ya' know like'...

  • terrible interviewer

    wonderful artist

  • terrible interviewer

    wonderful artist

  • Why the FUCK does she sing with a southern accent? She speaks like a stupid valley girl, from LA.

I wish I had never seen this video. It's going to be difficult to listen to her singing twang knowing it's fake.

  • @yowza69 You mean how all of the british rockers that sound like they are from the East Coast, and then when they talk, they sound like they are fans of Manchester United?

  • @yowza69 she's from texas. that's not a fake twang she sings with. and you're and ASS.

  • Ok, she clearly doesn't even know where she fits in.

  • That interviewer was really amateurish. Quoting other people's opinions and then simply asking what someone thinks about the quote is lazy journalism.

  • I really love the tiny video of her - spooky little pony, she is so authentic there. Not this interview.

  • she pulled a Billy Bob!

  • I wish I hadn't seen this interview.

  • Talking about who she listened to when she was younger... One name she mentioned (the first one) is not someone I have ever heard of... The next one, Will Oldham is actually younger than she is, so it is not likely that she listened to him when she was younger... and then the last one, Jason Leanord is a rugby player... The woman is a moron!

  • @cybershane Do a search on "Local Idiot To Post Comment On Internet" and you will find yourself written about.

  • @cybershane I've never heard of the first person she mentioned either but I do know that Will Oldham is 5 years older than she is. She was a teenager in high school when he got started. And yes Jason Leonard is a Rugby player, but that name isn't exactly a unique one, it also belongs to a pretty good musician up in Portland. Now who's the moron?

  • @MusicandAir Jason Leonard is NOT someone she listened to as a child... She is a moron!

  • @cybershane There's a clear edit in the interview. It seems like she's gone and described who she listens to now. I.e, "I listen to Will Oldham all the time".

Btw, why so angry? A few deep breaths and it will pass...

  • So Daniel Johnston is to blame eh? Why must you ruin so many lives Daniel? Why?

  • why is she pretending to be stupid? or is she pretending?

insipidity is the right word. yech.

  • wait - she's not pretending to be stupid, she's trying to come across as "smart" (smarter than the interviewer, smarter than anyone who might watch this) - unfortunately, in attempting to look so "smart" she actually comes across as not very smart at all. which i think is really common in hipster culture. it's weird. it's arrogant. it's confused. it's stupid! "Whatever, I'm in the rock section, it's like, i don't care". That is, like, so deep, dude, she's, like, too cool to care. Annoying.

  • @punkapaug Anyone who uses different forms and tenses of the word INSIPID rock in my book!

  • my dream girl...

  • i expected her to have a stronger texas accent. it sure comes out when she sings..

  • I think the point was that it doesnt matter how you clasify music, who cares? i certainly dont.

Its all irrellevant when your listening to it what bracket it comes under, i think her response was entirely justified.

  • No more interviews for her for a while, let's just stick to the singing for now Lolie

Maybe she was just tired I hope

But at the end of the day she's more known for her singing...

  • What are the names of the two other artists she says she's influenced by besides Will Oldham, D. Johnston and Syd B.?

    I can't hear what she's saying.

    Thanks!

  • The other two artists she says she's influenced by are two of Jolie's friends from Portland, Oregon: Stefan Jecusco, a musician and artist who built Jolie's violin (out of wood from an old door), has a band called Ginggang, did the illustrations for 'Escondida' and turned her on to Daniel Johnston; and Jason Leonard, who composes and plays atmospheric music, has a band called Loch Lomond (which Jolie can't pronounce!) and has contributed to a radio show in Portland. They both have MySpace sites.

  • wow, i never thought jolie holland would be so vapid

"umm...well i'm in the rock section? i've always been in the rock section? ...w/e. i'm in the rock section i don't care."

w/e her music is great i don't care

  • ugh, unfortunately i agree! this reminds me of two college girls mock-interviewing themselves for when they're famous. where's the jolie who wrote all the songs i love?

  • Very appropriate word. I am taken aback. In her defense, she is a feeler, and therefore is probably frustrated when asked to enumerate lists of her favorites. She likes certain things. (Period.) Moreover, I think her insipidity is partially her natural response to what she feels are tedious questions. But yes, she's not exactly an inspiring character, a fact only exacerbated by uninspiring impositions.

  • I love Jolie's music, but after this interview I'm shocked to see what an idiot she is. Watching this interview was like listening to a arrogant teenage girl.

  • Idiot, no...arrogant, well she has the right. and she is a musician...show me a musician who wants to be classified/ dont understand why you are offended.

  • I love you, Jolie Holland

  • "File Under" folk/Appalachian/old timey/Americana/

  • Gotta agree with a lot of the comments on here. This interview is brutally awful. A shade away from embarrassing. Come on now, you're not Charlie Rose. I was halfway waiting for this question: "So, you're, um, so totally awesome. How did you get so awesome?"

  • Interviewer is a moron. I wouldn't have answered that idiot's questions either

  • the interviewer is kind of a dumb dumb, though. she asks the exact same question that jolie has just told her is a stupid quesiton!

  • This has been going on forever! It's amazing they still ask these questions despite such well-known episodes as:

    1) Interviewer: Do you consider yourself mods or rockers?

    Ringo: Neither, we're mockers.

    2) Interviewer: Do you consider yourself a poet or a rocker?

Dylan: Nah, I just consider myself a song-and-dance man.

Why the hell are reporters so hell-bent on classifying things?

I really just don't get it.

  • love the music, but this video was a waste of 3' 27" of my time. I'm sure that she is really worth a decent indepth interview but this wasn't it.

Be careful of Daniel Johnston, a man with that much mental health concerns becoming aware of his own 'genius' is in danger of losing his 'gift'.

  • I like her music, but her personality in this brief interview was a turn-off... how hard is it to answer a question about the music you listened to when growing up?

  • Saw Jolie a couple of weeks ago and she was neither a space cadet nor a train wreck. She's ever-so-slightly shambolic at times (eccentricity and genius come at a price), but she's an absolute, 100 per cent, dyed-in-the-wool, genuine, true musician.

  • That interviewer is a genius-deep shit!

  • I hear she is a train wreck.

  • Is it me, or does Jolie seem like a space cadet? The vocal upswing in her voice at the end of every answer aggravates me.

"What kind of music did you listen to when you were young?"

This appears to be more of a voyeuristic piece between two high school girls than an interview. I am now, like, totally post-crushing-on-Jolie-Holland, and such as.

  • Jolie is great.

  • Goddamnit... which Syd Barrett song?

  • grabs the curiosity, damn.

  • ha. you hipster. i love the "post-falling-in-love-with-daniel johnston" bit. you're so interesting jolie holland.
