  • so weird to see these pillars in their natural setting with Elliott walking around them. I see them encased on Lovejoy downtown all the time, but they look so out of place/lonely without mr. smith's presence. Portland changed my life, thanks Elliott.

  • I miss you Elliott...you were a rare gift.

  • It's unbelievable the profound sense of grief I feel watching this video. It's amazing that the connection I feel to his music (and therefore to him) is so strong that I miss somebody I never even knew existed while he was alive. Not only is he the most talented artist I've ever listened to, but I can't imagine he was anything less than a beautiful person. Thank you, Elliot Smith.

  • The only person that comes close to elliot is nick drake. Love them both so much I swear its saved my life multiple times

  • i finally got around to uploading a version of this that is actually synced up /watch?v=olhcraz992c

  • this film should get a fucking oscar, as well that Ellioth Smith should've won one for Miss Misery, the world we live in today simply doesn't see the greatest, yet smallest people in it, it seems like no one appreciates good, real and beautiful music anymore

  • The haters Elliott; I'll keep them still. <3

  • I listen to him everyday.

  • so cool !

  • i'm never going to know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow.

  • I love You Elliott and I always will.

  • This was fifteen years ago! As rabid as his true fans are, that Elliott Smith isn't legendary on a wide scale makes no sense to me.

  • I like 240p because I can count the number of pixels on one hand...and it proves the fact that Elliott is amazing no matter what...he could have recorded an album with an abacus and I would've bought it and listened to it day in and day out

  • HOW could 29 people dislike this? do they have ears?!?

  • 29 dislikes? sigh

  • 240p fits the low-fi style perfectly....amazing....

  • what's the song around 4:20?

  • @evilvon it's a cover of Thirteen, by Big Star

  • hey if you like this kind of music then you might enjoy my channel!

  • @theneverendingalbum I enjoyed your channel very much.

  • amazing if your favorite artist is eliott smith give me a hells ya

  • amazing if your favorite arist is eliott smith give me a hells ya

  • haha what the hellis he doing at 4:10 4:20

hes a genius, the world will miss him and

his short life was tragic but it ensured his music would never spoil

"im never going to know you now, but im gonna love you any how.." my sentiments exactly

  • Thank You so much for uploading this. Respect

  • just found this video. what a great piece of history. can't help but feel melancholy watching it

  • there is so much to get in this..

  • Anyone know where in Portland those illustrated columns are?

  • @ThePleaseCheese There are only a few of them up since they relocated. They're on NW 10th Avenue between Everett & Flanders.

  • Comment removed

  • @ThePleaseCheese Pearl District.

  • I'd kill to have this as a lossless...

  • Bars three.

  • Fantastic up!

Thanks for putting this up, it's got my favorite version of 'Angeles'.

  • In my heaven, Elliott will play Angeles for me over and over, indefinitely.

  • Sleep well, darlin'....

  • this is brilliant !!

  • How can anyone dislike this?

  • @nick4man3 So bad, but so true

  • whats the song at 5:03

  • @villasixx 13

  • @villasixx Thirteen by Big Star. Elliot covered it

  • Thankyou.

  • Thank you for this!!!

  • It looks like some of the footage during Angeles was shot in LA. 9:06 is the KFC on Western in K-town

  • best video on youtube. Elliott IS God.

  • 7:16 funny

  • yet to find a better youtube video than this

  • Beautiful. I really wish he could come back. It's like his song, I'm never gonna know you now but in gonna love you anyhow.

  • It's so sad knowing he'll never make more music. couldn't he be like tupac and keep making cds???

  • This makes me miss the hell out of Portland (before it got yuppified) and of course. Elliott.

  • @CloseTheClub man you're telling me... i used to live in portland. i have some of the best memories of my life in that town. i remember getting drunk at 'my father's place' ... i need to go back.

  • Let's get Elliott's ashes, put him back together, so he'll come to life, so we can hear his beautiful music once again <3

  • I miss this beautiful soul. he has gotten me and so many others through so many hard times. I don't know what to say because life just isn't fair sometimes. I'm glad we have his music

  • Does anybody know what kind of camera they used to film this movie?

  • Beautiful, thank you for sharing.

  • What microphone is he using?

  • Can someone please tell me the song after 'Between the bars'

  • @GodzillasNan Thirteen.

  • @GodzillasNan It's 13 originally by the band Big Star off their 1972 record "#1 Record". I love Elliot's but the original is a thing of wonder, as is the whole Big Star catalog. Do yourself a favor, go get it and you'lli understand why they were one of Elliot's inspirations.

  • god i love him so much it really hurts me.. but it's ok. i'm always so thankful to him for being so beautiful. and he'll never be gone.

  • Definitely one of the best videos on youtube. Gotta love the awkwardness of it all especially as Elliott attempts to mimick the "Rock is King" poster.

  • LOVE IT!

  • haha 7:17

    <3

  • Jesus.. I love his music so much....

  • Simply amazing

  • the song he sings is beautiful. what is it

  • He was so talented. I wish I could step back in time and spend one day with him just to hear his thoughts and ideas, and look into his songwriting process.

  • @mrbungs he would just sit in a bar and write, said him!

  • @whitesidestheused Makes sense. I've written some of my most interesting lyrics while sitting in public places that I didn't want to be. Bars included.

  • Listening to him takes me somewhere. I don't know where it is...but it is haunting.

  • did you find a better synced version? if you upload this vid to rapidshare or something i can sync it up for you if you want?

  • I would have loved to meet him.... R.I.P.

  • what's that first song?

  • @Jessebeauchamp I think it's the chords of Baby Britain.

  • @Jessebeauchamp The first of the three songs he plays in this video is Between the Bars.

  • elliot smith has made such an impact on my life and im only fifteen, i really wish he were still around, id of loved to see em live. fantastic video, and thank you for sharing this amazing footage with the rest of us! R.I.P. Elliot, you are missed dearly.

  • @kman3000000 how does your age matter?

  • i guess it doesnt really, i mean i was just trying to say that at my age even, his music has affected me.

  • between 0:13 to 01:15 .. it sounds like ELLIOTT SMITH song?? pls tell me the name plsss thank you =)

  • @Crackman34 it's actually an acoustic version of Baby Britain

  • Comment removed

  • @Walkr ty for help me.. =)

  • @Walkr so it is! damn i never would have noticed that.

  • @Walkr you make me so happy even if im drunk :'(

  • @Crackman34 and it really is amazing..it's amazing what those 4 chords sound like. do you know the original version of Baby Britain..it sounds like a different tune.

  • @Crackman34

look for baby britain end sessions for the full song in acoustic.

  • miss me some Elliott.

  • at 7:10 when he tries to imitate the poster made me laugh.. and at 7:55 notice how he says.. "angeles take one".. and it was perfect. he is amazing. you'll have an impact in the afterlife just like you had an impact on in this world.

i've only discovered you're music a few months ago.. but its already changed my life. i haven't listened to anything else since i heard your music.

    rest in peace elliott.

  • @elmntree i had the same experience and im still stuck on him 5 years later...haha. one of the greatest ever indeed. changed my life forever and i still find new meaning in his songs all this time later. every time i listen it invokes feeling and thats all that matters

  • I've been listening to Elliot for about 5 years and had no idea that my three favorite songs of his were compiled into a short. Also, that "thirteen" was a cover. I miss him more than anybody I could imagine knowing, (I never knew him, but see the world thru the eye's he dotted and t's he crossed in every song.)

  • Recorded Oct 17. that is my Bday!

  • just brilliant. i love Elliott's expression at 8:16 with men in suits and ties in the background...

  • my favourite bit 7:15 Elliott was actually a funny guy. Yeah he was a bit melencholy but he was a funny guy aswell.

  • wow he does thirteen amazingly i never thought i'd see it

  • Man I really like the intro. The saddest composition I've ever heard next to Dannys Song.

  • I fall asleep to this every night.

    Love you.

    XO

  • This is the shit... Always reminds me of sweet Summer 09'

    :(

I'll never forget this guy, these songs, this video, those times. I wish we can just go to the past, to whereever time we want and just Halt time forever... I feel like crying everytime I think of Elliotts sorrow and the sorrow I had in that time and it pains... Daamn...

  • @KimYungSoo Yeah I feel your pain man. Believe me I do : - ( I miss him so much it makes me want to cry. I wish I could go back in time, find him before he died and pull him out of the depths of hell he was in. The last days of Elliott Smith are the sadest. It's such a crying shame that someone so beautiful had to end up that way.

  • three amazing songs.

  • I love his little guitar jamming at the beginning.

  • hard to believe, but that's an early acoustic version of "baby britain" he's playing there.

  • oh yea now when you said it, it's actually not that hard to believe. Thanks for the info... at first I really thought it was just "random" jamming.

Oh well, never been a big fan of the poppy version of Baby Britain on XO, always preferred his first 3 albums, the "lo-fi" acoustic ones.

  • @sputman76 -- that just dawned on me a few days ago while the mind was wandering, I checked this video out to prove it (sing along), then I was going to post it. you beat me to it ;-)

  • why is it a good thing he didn't realize how good he was?

  • so sad that he's gone, but at least we can be happy that he was gone before he realized how great he was.

he'll always be one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived.

  • goodbye silliott smith

  • miss him miss him miss him miss him

  • fucking love this man. dont need to exaggarate. hes so much better musician than what hes showing. But his music and lyrics are so honest.

  • When you listen to this guy's music a lot, it almost feels like you know him. It's almost impossible to find someone who can pour his heart into his music like this guy. Rest in peace, Elliott.

  • I completely agree--there's no one quite like elliott.

  • @therewillbeastronaut That's exactly how I feel but couldn't put it in words, thanks! Rest in peace Elliott

  • @therewillbeastronaut me ocurre lo mismo...cuando lo escucho, me traslado a su lado y siento como que lo conozco desde siempre...elliott es mi angel.-... i love you elliott ,forever my angel

  • I've always debated if I could bring one musician back from the dead who would it be and its always been between elliott and lennon but elliott just has this beauty and raw power behind his music that I've never heard anywhere else. I actually feel something when I hear his songs..

  • I agree about the beauty and raw power part--he was like a fierce lion-:)

  • I've had that debate in my head many times. Every-time I think about that and go back down that road, it just leads me to feeling sad. Who could EVER choose only one musician to bring back when so many have left?

  • Not to mention other artists or people in general. It's a rough universe.

  • what's the song playing at 7:19 ?

  • Instrumental version of Baby Britain. I love this song too but it's only a 1min song. you can find if you download rares and b-side songs of Elliot Smith

  • hauntingly beautiful, no one can compare.

  • Can I find somewhere the sound of the beginning ( 00:12 - 01:17 ) ??? Thanx a lot, Jerome S. from Geneva - Switzerland

  • its the baby britain acoustic version you can find it in youtube

  • acoustic baby britain CIAO!

  • i think u can find it in the disc called NEW MOON

  • It's a one-off acoustic version of Baby Britain. I have no idea where to find it.

  • you can ps me, i can sent it over the email ;)

  • brilliant video. It makes me miss him more, though. Gah, he was (is) so beautiful.

i love that you can almost see a little smile at 08.31 - 08.33

  • it's not there. Thanks for trying to sell us shit though.

  • when this film was filmed i was 13 and i am thankful to have a beautiful intro to life! I own and am thankful to everything he has ever done. What a wonderful human being!

  • elliott and the actress edie sedgwick seem similar, i dont know why just does

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Its pretty hard to find. Does anyone know where to get the book autumn dewilde did about him?

  • @CarmenitaHOLLA

Amazon is a good place to look. Thats where I got my copy. Or you could have a bookstore order it in. amazon would prolly be cheaper though.

  • fantastic

we miss you so much here, ellioth

  • everyone should be forced to watch this. just beautiful.

ill never come close to his greatness with my music.

  • simply Betsy..

  • thirteen is such a lovely song, and this is such a lovely version

  • I:23 Notice the white vans, and 6:20 when he sees the white vans and double looks because they freak him out. He was right though, those vans are evrywhere.

  • Best thing ever.

  • I like to think that while he was alive, I somehow passed him on a sidewalk somewhere, and said hello, not knowing at all who he was.

  • the greatest.

  • man that pose at 4:10 scare the crap out of me

  • @strongmungus WTF>? WHY??

  • Best twelve minutes of my life.

  • Ditto! So wonderful and tragic all at once. Thanks for posting Walkr.

  • @Kazikox thats what she said

  • Elliott Smith is one of if not the greatest songwriter(s) who has ever graced this planet(period) Its a F*%king shame that he's Fu*@cking GONEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

  • I know - i try to continue his legacy by trying to write my own songs, but i'm 28 now. and haven't come close to his worst posthumously released stuff. Oh well, at least i can cover some of his simpler songs! :-)

  • @dressrehearsalrags you honor his legacy by playing guitar and trying, bro. you honor his legacy by listening and enjoying. he was the best not for us to emulate, but to enjoy. bless you

  • I miss those broadway bridge columns, always a reminder of Elliott

  • This is one of the only videos where I've seen him look directly into a camera for more than a fraction of a second. His talent blows my mind, as my mom says, "It's a shame how the great ones always go so young." For real, mom.

  • He had blue eyes...

Miss you, Elliott. How I wish I weren't an idiot ten year old when you died.

  • elliot, you were a great man and a better friend. would have loved to spend a second with you. this is all i feel like saying

  • I can't rest when you crawl across my mind I miss someone i will never know I'm missing something I've never been a part of

  • you were an unbelievable, amazing talent Elliott. We love you and miss you.

  • miss you, Elliott.

  • I was introduced to Elliot Smith from a close friend of mine before I moved and continued looking for XO. I can never get enough of his lyrics. He was a great artist.

  • Starting bit?

I'm pretty sure it is "Baby Britain" slowed down A LOT.

  • Ive watched this movie soo many times over the years. It gets better every time I see it. What a total shame he isn't around but we are blessed he left us this amazing music.

  • does anyone know what that starting bit on the guitar is?

    where does it come from?

is there a song that goes with it?

  • It's a solo acoustic demo of Baby Britain.

I don't remember where I got it from but it's very nice.

  • Do you still have a copy of just the acoustic demo of Baby Britain?

I would be great to get a copy if you do.

    Thanks.

  • I'll give you several good reasons not to do it. :'(

  • r.i.p. Elliott

another year gone, but another year nonetheless, that I've loved you and been so thankful you were apart of the world for the short time that you were.

    thank you for everything.

    see you later,

    <3

  • I miss those drawings in that part of town which no longer exists.

  • so beautiful...

  • Ah, thank you : )

  • your welcome, I only wiash i knew where he lived in Portland

  • What is the song played at the very beginning?

  • it's a slowed down acoustic version of baby britain

  • do you know the name of that song now?...sorry for my english.... :(

  • Walk and drive around these places almost everyday..
