A beautiful discussion. What touched me most was how TM helped you mom. I was a heavy smoker once but after giving up smoking, today I hardly believe if I ever smoked once. Ever since I dropped smoking I know I can handle any of my mental problems with TM. ... Thanks for this video.
Meditation is thousands of years old, it's an ancient Hindu practice. I don't know much about TM since you have to pay a shitload of money to learn it, but from what I understand it's just a different technique of meditating that involves having a mantra that you repeat over and over in your head. It's kind of shady that they charge you so much to learn it when you can learn other forms of meditation for free, but ANY form of meditation is a good thing, and I'm trying to get into it.
neither guru dev. whoever his guru was. meditation is a very very ancient hindu practice. this may be new to the western world.. but it's a common knowledge in india and its diaspora.
No, it isn't a common knowledge but it comes from a tradition passed down from master to disciple(s). Even Maharishi's Guru Dev (Swami Brahmananda Saraswati) learned it from his guru, and so on....
Of all the people I wouldn't expect to be into TM, Howard Stern is near the top of the list. But it makes sense - he cuts through surface nonsense, people's superficial PR campaign. He is interested in the real person.
Here's a free one that will work as well or better than TM. Close your eyes and say OM 100 times in a deep slow voice and concentrate all your attention on the sound. Your thoughts WILL clear. It's the church bells of the true temple. The most primordial sound. DO IT!!
Maybe it works the first time, but the next ones you will just get bored. Self chosen mantras just don't work. They're dead mantras. To work, you'll have to received it from a living guru. The mantra must be empowered by a guru. Otherwise it'll be just a waste of time, energy and detrimental to your well-being.
I am going to have to call complete bs on that. Not only do mantras such as om work, but taoism, Hinduism, and Buddhism, which all go back thousands of years, have been using the same or similar mantras with great success. Maharishi was really Hindu anyway, he just couldn't get westerners to practice Hinduism much less market it.
Well actually you have no idea what you´re talking about, when the the TMers and teachers and Howard say "repeat the mantra", They don´t mean SAYING it and concentrate on the sound. And yeah your thoughts might clear, but it still doesn´t do as much as TM does, which TMers don´t even experience in the meditation. And seriously, you don´t think the 350 universities who has validated TM, hasn´t thought of what you just said? TM in the west is over 50 years old and has been researched just as long.
TM is based from hinduism. Look into hinduism and TM is nothing. I was born and riased a hindu, and TM is a mere parcel of the entire picture.

Meditation is amazing! If we all meditated, there would be complete peace on earth and humanity would bask in total bliss.

Maharishi was also a physicist. That's why TM had a scientific touch to it.

@HeshimaJameni - yeah, the fact that Maharishi was a physicist is very interesting.
