The bars are red and gameplay and graphics is jacked up is because mame hasn't fully restored MK4 yet. Although the game is not complete yet, mame made it complete enough just so MK4 can be playable.
As future versions of mame come out, you will notice more improvements of MK4.

That's the dangdest thing about emulation... you need a computer more powerful than the original game's specs just to run it at proper speed! One can only wonder when someone will post a PS3/Xbox360/Wii emulation video on the 'tube... you might need two or three quad-core processors!

You wrong. Emulation speed in mame only depends of cpu speed. The graphic card and more than 1 gb memory is not important at all. This game run at 70% of its initial speed during fights and 100% in menu screens on my pc. My cpu is a quad core q9650 (not overclocked).
Getting there! it's better than the last version of MAME which would only let me get into the game but the screen was black. Anytime now I'm pretty sure it will be playable...although I have Gold for the Dreamcast I still want to the emulate the original to make me remember the old good days!

I wouldn't say it is pointless to try to emulate this game, even knowing that the N64, PSX versions can be emulated perfectly; I say this cause the graphics in the arcade version are better. HOWEVER the best version is the sega dreamcast's one, which is Mortal Kombat Gold. If you have an OK pc you should try it
yes, i've tested now too. And i have to say on my system it was a tiny tiny tiny seconds faster. I think the emulation for games like this requires much stronger cpu. I have 3.2ghz HT pentium 4. I need to go up to quad core 4 2.67ghz. I think that would make a big difference and also 2 gb isn't enough. i need to upgrade to 4gb ddr2! In beginning i had a lot of trouble with playstation emulation. Since i bought a new cpu and gpu i can play on the highest setting without any slowdown.
Don't you need a chd file (that's huge) to play this game, not just the rom? You also need a fast enough computer to get decent performance (though I'm not sure even the fastest consumer pc specs out there can run it at full speed yet).
A new version of mame just came out, people should try it with that.

i have a Q9450 @2.66ghz. 4gb ram, and nvidea 9600gs gfx card and it still runs as slow as this. maybe a tad faster, not much tho

My speed with this game on Mame 0.126 is good. But the emulator is still not good enough to emulate it.
My PC stats:
Quad core 6600 2,4ghz
3 GIG DDR2 Memory
Nvidia XFX 9600GT (runs at 1,8ghz memory)
all with the latest drivers.
My computer is very strong, but if the emulator isn't good then it won't run good.
