I was just a grade school kid when these guys hit my attention, around the time most of the world was. I used to get in trouble singing this. I knew it was dirty, but did not know exactly why. That was always enough for me, to embarrass adults was so cash.
If this ISN'T the original DRUMMER, he sure as hell sounds like it. I clicked on your video and was listening while working on E-Bay lol. I went to REPLAY it for the 5th time and saw a comment asking what happened to Bruce Gary.
I assume that means this isn't him in the video. Whoever it is sounds just like him & has his style down pretty good !!!
I appreciate when new band members join and play it the was it was made by the previous memeber. I like to hear classics the way they were intended.
love the song, love the band, stole this album in the 10th grade then bought another copy. But I have to say there is something a little creepy about middle age men singing songs about high school sitting on their face. Oh course being middle aged myself.. it is a creepy feeling i can live with.
@kingorbit I know what you mean - I saw Gene Simmons appear on Letterman years ago to sing on Gin Blossoms remake of "Christine Sixteen", and he changed the middle spoken part from "I don't usually say things like this to girls your age. But when I saw you comin' out of school that day, I knew... I got to have you. I GOT TO HAVE YOU!" to "When I saw you comin' out of school that day I knew baby, you're a freshman, I'm a senior." Lol. You can find the video here.
actually-pop punk and power pop, when done right -in my opinion-is about really good teenage songs written by old guys. I mean think about it-you can't write a really awesome pop song when you actually ARE a teenager!-that's why so many teen bands are screamo or hardcore- the old guys who write good teen songs are singing from the perspective of the character in the song, not themselves.
Hell, I wrote a song where I ask a girl to prom, but I wrote it when I was in my 20's.
@trapadoored I am not saying the song isnt good. I am saying that seeing middle age men singing songs about high school girls sitting of their face is kidda creepy.
@kingorbit I know what you're saying, but when they first recorded these songs, they weren't middle-aged men, they were young guys, lol! Sure, they could alter the lyrics to suit their ages, but who even wants to IMAGINE someone's grandmother sitting on their face??? BLEAGHHHHHHHHHHH!!! hahahahaha
Larryvgs, thanks a ton for sharing these vids! it is truly amazing how good they sound. fieger's voice hasn't lost much and the band is very tight. Great stuff!
Bruce Gary, the Knack's original drummer, also passed away way too early in 2006 at the age of 55 from Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Gary was one of the best drummers ever, and after the Knack initially broke up, he was in great demand, going on to perform with some of the premier musicians of his era including Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow and Rod Stewart. He and Fieger had a falling out, but they reunited to record Badfinger's "No Matter What" in 1997.
Due to the overwhelming response to Doug's passing, I've decided to post "My Sharona" from the same performance as well. Please thank DeccaVision and World Cafe Live for their support of the Knack by purchasing the entire concert on DVD.
He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005, for which he had extensive chemotherapy and had one half of a lung removed. He also underwent brain surgery in August 2006 to have two tumors removed. After battling cancer for five years, Fieger died Sunday at his home in Woodland Hills, California, on February 14, 2010. He was 57 years old.
Can't think of much to add to what's already been said. One thing I've noticed when watching their videos is that they always seem to greatly enjoy performing and they respect their audiences. Doug Fieger once said if performing ever became just a job he would stop. I'm glad it never did.
RIP, Doug, and Bruce. This was one of the catchiest tunes of its year, and a song that has worn well through the years. So very sad, two of them claimed by disease prior to 60....they gave me a lot of smiles with this song, and I thank them for that.
Oh man, we used to BLAST this song driving like a bat outta hell to the beach. Once we got to the beach (if we managed to make it outta the car), fuggetabouit - then we'd really B-L-A-S-T this. We were lucky enough to see them live in some great little clubs that don't exist anymore back in ' 79 & early ' 80's. Sh t - Sux, he's dead! RIP (Rock In Paradise) Dougie 5:13 am Feb. 15 2010
Maybe now "Get The Knack" will finally get the masterpiece of rock-pop recognition it has deserved all these years. It was THE album that put the final nail in the coffin of disco, and it sounds as fresh today as it did the day it came out. Those who only know "My Sharona" do not know what they missed.
RIP, Bruce!!
