  • Beautiful and meaningful!

  • lovely and all, and nice to know such music can be made without the Blowing Of The Brains Out, which is the silly assumption re the pipes, at least in my part of the world, i.e. the Colony formerly known as Canada

  • What a treat. I know Margaret Bennett, and it's an honor to hear Martyn. Lovely piping.

  • last tune i believew is 'put me in the great chest'

  • second tune is 'the ewe with the crooked horn"... (strathspey)

  • second tune is 'the ewe with the crooked horn"... (strathspey)

  • I don't know if he was already ill when this video was filmed, but watching him play this tune and knowing the history of the tune makes me all teary eyed :(

What a colossal loss to the Scottish music world.

  • Dear tomscotland thanks a million for posting the music of this truly talented man. I get a great deal of joy just listening to him play, and it often brings a lump to my throat as I am so far away from my Bonnie Scotland. Once again, Many thanks and Slainte

  • Beautiful thanks for posting :)

  • What a wonderful player! So sad that he is no longer with us. Thanks for posting.

  • This remains one of my favorite utubes. I really like the choice of background...

    Awesome bit of playin

quadruple thumbs up..if I had em

  • This is truly beautiful music. The two dislikes are two people who would not know great music if they fell over it. Thanks for Posting this wonderful Video.

  • I was privledged to see Martyn perform in king tuts in glasgow on two occasions. two of the most incredible live performances I have ever seen, his loss is deeply felt by all who loved his music. we share that with his family and friends. As for the two dislikes listed here, you need to grow up you obviously lack something?

  • this man is amazing

he has inspired me through his music ,every day i think of him

i wish i could have met him but at least his music lives on

  • there should now be a tune commisioned called Martyns Lament to honour one of scotlands great musical talents. please upload as many Mrtyn Bennett video as you can so that future generation can see the man perform.

  • @CumbernauldMedia

There's a Piobrachd that was written for Martyn by his Grandmother called 'Fhir an Fhuilt Dhuinn' based on her favourite Piobrachd. It's one of the most beautiful and heartfelt songs ever and well worth a listen.

  • This is good music.

  • @james34565

The pipes are Scottish Small Pipes.

  • MaCrimmon is home no more returning..

  • 5 years that he misses. he was just starting the music revolution when he passed away. So sad

  • TomTscotland,

That was really enjoyable! I'm marking it as a favorite. Thank you for putting it there!

  • What a talented piper. As a Scot, my heart wells with pride when I hear Martyn play the pipes. I was saddened to learn that this talented man is no longer with us. Thank you Martyn for your music which I always listen to, and at my ain funeral, your rendition of MacCrimmons Lament will see me oot of this world. God Bless Martyn and RIP

  • I love it. I am a DIE hard rocker & metalhead but LOVE bagpipes! Beautiful, uplifting yet haunting. This version is lower pitched than another one I saw, but magical none the less.

  • I listened to martyn benett for the fistrt time when I was at friends house. He was a wonderful artist.

    RIP.

  • loombaron-sorry abour your friend. RIP Martyn Bennett.

  • he seems to be a bit unrelaxed. nice playing at all!

  • Your comment makes no sense

  • I know how hard it is to be 'relaxed' while playing the pipes. This is just concentration. What a beautifull peace of music!

  • Wow. We would all like to be that unrelaxed.

  • @wmkpiper

    You can bet !

  • What a crock of shite. What in the name of heaven are you saying borderpiper61. Ye mak nae sense mon.

  • thank you, i discovery this artist with your video; it's so beautifull !

  • Jaysus! Is it just me or is he the bulb off Heath Ledger. The good ones die young I 'spose.

  • I agree. In this video there is certainly a resemblance.

  • what kind of bagpipe is he playing?

  • Seems like a form of smallpipe.

  • scottisch smallpipes ...this called by gibson pipemakers type ceilidh pipes.( pronounced kay-lee)

Other pipemakers called them just scth. smallpipes...

  • Scottish Smallpipe by Hamish Moore

  • He's playing Scottish Smallpipes in the key of low A

  • RIP Mr. Bennett. I saw you perform in Montreal in 1997 and you were bloody amazing.

  • Touching music. Nice video

  • great playing ...great man .. and good video mix ........rip M.B.

  • He will be smiling down on you x

  • It's a sin right enough.

  • Thank you for this touching playing of ageless music - I love to hear what you do, I love the photography as well. This resonates with the Scottish blood that courses thru my veins (My great grandmother, born in Brechin, was a Kerr.) Greetings from San Francisco - George

  • You mean, the 12.5% of Scottish blood that "courses through your veins"? The music's not going to have that profound an effect on you!

  • Talk about a great loss to the music world. So sad that he passed - well before his time if you ask me.

  • I'm glad to be from Newfoundland, Martyns place of birth. Scotland is just across the water ;)

  • its true the good die young :(

your music still inspires us Martyn, may you live forever in gods own highlands :)

  • Martyn Bennet was a great talent, a tribute to scotland and celtic music...

  • They're hamish moore smallpipes in the key A, but they're made from Lignum Vitae, which is the most dense wood you can find. The tone you get from them is amazing.. I think he's only made three with that wood before.

  • martyn bennett

  • scotlands greatest contemporary song writer and musician, sadly missed but not in heavan.

  • Anybody know what kind of small pipes those are? I like the low tone better than most of the small pipes I've heard. I love this sound. I'm a Cajun so I didn't grow up with pipes but I can imagine that Cajun music would sound good on these pipes. I can see something akin to Galatians pipes and accordions playing together.

  • what's the second tune?

  • please note _ Ive now uploaded a higher quality version of this.

From an earlier comment other MaCrimmons Lament is followed by Ewie wi´ the Crooked Horn - Na Goisidich - The Twisted Bridge

  • aka "The Famous Bridge". Allan Macdonald says he's learnt it from the singing of a man in Uist. It seems it does have lyrics, which are more song-like than pure mouth music. Still trying to get the words, though...

  • hey its shoots and ladders

  • wow!

  • looks a bit like Heath Ledger.

  • Yeah. I thought it was Heath Ledger for the first moment. lol

  • Lovely version of this tune...

  • oh, how beautiful!!!!

I'm going to put this in my favourites.

    Thank you for posting this.

  • RIP Martyn Bennett...thanks for sharing this video! If I could be half this good on my whistle I'd be very happy.

  • Anyone know where i can get the sheet music to this at?

  • martyn - alma grande, gracias.

  • I can identify three of the four tunes; what's the first reel?

  • genial!!!! i am french ... so good

  • An inspiration to us all, RIP Martyn - A truly beautiful soul ...

  • genious and i'm an englishman

  • Does anyone have the sheetmusic for this?

  • What a ride from that air to the reel! Suas e!

  • excellent video

  • there scottish small pipes not irish pipes and there in A

  • W-O-W

  • Whauw, which key is that? I thought Uilleann pipes didn't go underneath D ?

    beautiful!

  • God rest your Soul Marytn, you left behind a great legacy.

  • BRAVO Martyn Bennett. May you and your music shine forever, You have left this world behind. Hope you are soaring some where else. Free from pain and sadness!!

  • this is lovely

  • went to his memorial concert in Edinburgh...very moving

  • a true musician.

  • Top moments: seeing him in Edinburgh Liquid Rooms on and watching enormous American festival tourists moshing about with folky crusty types and monged out clubbers. Martyn Bennett reached all sorts and introduced them to tunes, beats or traditions as applicable. From beery indie Maximo Park loving Geordies to fiddle freaks, he got everyone in on the massive joy of good music. Martyn has been gone for a while but I still miss what he gave us. Still sadly missed, but fondly remembered.

  • Great stuff. The second last tune is called 'Na Goisidich' and the last tune is called 'An Drochaid Chluiteach'.

Both are found in Allan MacDonalds' book 'The Moidart Collection'

  • After the lament, he plays the strathspey Ewie with a Crooked Horn, then something I don't recognize, the last tune is Twisted Bridge.

  • a genious, his playing makes me cry

  • Unfortunately I got to know Martyn just a week after his death and I really felt so sorry for him. :(

    I love what he did.

Can anybody please tell me the name of the last two tunes?

  • Martyn and I played together as kids in Newfoundland, Canada, where him & I were born. Martyn, you are dearly missed.

    ...Gordon Cormier

  • Thank you for this! We'll miss Martyn forever but will never forget him.

  • I'm thinking of doing a couple of scenic videos using Martyn's music as a sound track. As you no doubt know - his recorded stuff was pretty different from this straight version of this tune.

  • martyn bennett music is amazing, i have an album from him and it shows how talented he was. Im very sad hes no longer with us, he was a great musiscian . I miss you a lot martyn

  • what is the CD he is amazing

  • END of a LEG

He playing the end of a leg, leg end, legend

theres nae boody ooo kin play leek thee scoots hooot ...

  • A LEGEND.

  • legendary

  • A few years back, himself gave of his time at a benefit in aid of raising funds for SKAT ( Skye and Kyle against tolls) in Stirling. it was a good night and well worth the near enough 700 mile round trip to attend and be back in Coventry for work in the morning.

The bridge is now free. It cannot be underestimated the influence that campaign had on our Scottish government on matters of bridge tolls and PFI/PPP.

    Thanks Martyn,Yer missed.

    Tom.

  • Wow! Its amazing!

  • In any language - Martyn, we miss ya.

  • tha mi agiaridh briscagin mersetaholie. The river flowing made me need a pee. Martyns a legend. RIP.

  • me too! slan abhaile Martyn

  • go raibh maith agat a chara, go mbeadh tu sona is sasta ar neamh, do chara Eireannach

  • That was fantastic!!!! Thanks!

  • Thank You Martyn

  • Thanks tom..was quite emotional to see him again

  • Scotland has lost a great musician, i had the pleasure of his company more than once( and a beer or two in Benbecula!) and i can can only think of what he could have done in the future.. He had an impression on me as a young Scotsman.

  • Has anyone know who is the pipe maker of his smallpipe set? Thanks.

  • Hamish Moore

  • He was really the best.

Cumha Mc Crimmain, great piper Mc Crimmon's lament as he dreamt his own death the night before a battle.

  • he was so young...what happened? beautiful song...omg...I loved it.

  • Great piping and tune .... seems to reach into your soul.

Should be very evocative to those that knew of Martyn and and anyone with a Scottish connection.

  • Great stuff - i remember competing against Martyn in a piping competiton in Lochaber when we were boys - and getting thoroughly beaten by him! Great playing, even the wee slip at 2:11 ;)

  • Martyn Bennett....... one of the greatest pipers of all time. Missed by all i'm sure! Inspirational guy, with unbelievable talent.

  • Heya Mates, great Piper and a wonderful tune.

Anyone outhere who knows where i can find the sores (sheet) for MacCrimmon´s Lament. Would be great if someone knows.

  • Hi

You can find the sheet music of this lament in the composer´s site (James Scott Skinner)

Look for "Macrimmon" through the collection link.

  • Thank you very much javivr, just went on the site and only found "The Piper's Weird" by the search for Macrimmon. Even Vipers page does not have this on it. But again thank you very much for your afford. regards Thomas

  • I understand from the info on the site that they are two names for the same lament. Listen to the composer´s play.

  • Wow, maybe it is because I am German, or I am just blind, anyway I just can´t find it. Javivr would you be so kind to send me the link? my adress would be thomas.kohrs and the provider is tiscali with de on the end I have a version of that Lament from Lifescapes - sounds great

  • Hi. I think it´s not the same tune now. Look through the link when you type "tune finder" on google.

  • I miss Him a lot. I discover Martyn Bennett during the Interceltic festival in 1997. he will stay as one of my best memory ever. Thank you mister bennett.

  • please tell me you have some more martyn bennett videos their is a severe lack of them on youtube :)

  • Stuart -Wish I did have some more of Martyn - I enjoyed this one so much.

He did feature in some other Transatlantic Sessions tracks but this was the only one where he was the main player.

  • thanks for the reply tom, I heard that their was a television program made about him on the bbc or something, but im not entierly sure!.... thanks for this :)

  • when was this recorded? Late nineties?

  • Programme was first broadcasted 1995.

  • Great Piper and Musician. We´ll miss you. Tunes: MacCrimmon's Lament followed by Ewie wi´ the Crooked Horn - Na Goisidich - The Twisted Bridge.

  • Thanks for additional information.

This is my personal favourite track of the first series of The Transatlantic Sessions.

  • Aye, a man of great talent. Is it not sad that himself has gone away.Memories are fine but I'd rather ask of him a request and himself graciously oblige. Yer missed Martyn.

  • yep,great playing and a very evocative vid.Thanks.

  • I hadn't seen this before its so beautiful, so moving. Thank you so much for posting this.
