Drums were to loud, and the guitar guys have quite a bit of patience, at the beginning I would have told those people to shut the hell up and quit moving furniture I'm playin over here
goofygoat... some of us BABY BOOMERS are commenting on Mason's age and appearance because it reminds us how much older we are, now. It's not meant as disrespect -- it's more astonishment!
I was 17 when I first heard this. The man is a damned genius. To hear the three of them playing this "ad hoc", wow! He can still play with the best of them, and my hair is now the same colour as his. Get in there!!!
christ, can you generation Y 20 something's forget about how Mason looks and just pay attention to his music? you all sound pretentious and shallow. my god.
Got pulled by WB and YouTube. You can't find the original anywhere on here now. I'm fucking sick of this bullshit between YT and WB. Letting them on YT gets them more attention and raises sales, not hurt them! Warner Brothers are a bunch of greedy fucktards.
Beautiful, as always. He is intently concentrating on what he became the master of, and has no time for histrionics. It also appears he is watching the conductor, who also did a fine job.
This is great, especially the acoustic bass accompaniment at the beginning....but damn, who was that other guitarist screwing up the sound? Could have done without him. The acoustic bass line when the chorus part hits, though, really worked very well.
Most amazing and a piece that reminds me of my childhood! I am a fan of rock! Mason William's Clasical Gas will always be a staple in my musical favorites! It gives me the feelings of a flight into fantasy!
Both excellent, both different. We have to remember that Mason CREATED 'Classical Gas.' Personally, I like my version, or interpretation better as well. But it is easy to play with the framework and embellish the music once it is done. The genesis of the idea, then creating the music from in a total cohesive way, is a huge challenge. Classical Gas was a HUGE hit and it still sells. As much as I love Tommy, he has yet to reach the masses as Mason did.
Mason is a great performer, and an amazing musician. But personaly I like Tommy Emanueals version better, and I think it sounds better on a stell string rather than a nylon.
I saw him live in 1979 with "the steamrollers" and has to be one of the most electricfying composures I have ever had the privledge to hear and see. This will always be a classic icon, long live the 12 strings!
amazing, mason performing this song fills me with wonder and insperation the only other song to bring this filling over me is stairway to heaven. such a beautiful peice thanks for sharing.

Why do people insist on posting their horrible interpretations- of Classical Gas? Mason Williams was the real thing. Talented guy all around !

what happened to the video on here of Mason surrounded by the full orchestra? That was the best version.

Was wondering the same...it was an original video back when Mason's hair was still dark and present.

Amazing! But... when did Mason get to be so OLD?
(Geez -- that means I'm getting older, too, doesn't it? Drat!) It's hard to believe that tune has been around for over 40 years!

Amazing that his springboard for this was being a comedy writer for the Smothers Brothers.
Does anyone have a clip of the clear guitar with the goldfish swimming in it while he plays this?

It may not be hard rock but it's a damn fine tune by a real guitar master. Great guitar work is timeless, whatever the genre!

I love the earlier version better than the ochestra one. Although there are only three guitars, but they sound so real and natural.

Mason Williams, Tommy Emanuelle;
Both excellent, both different. We have to remember that Mason CREATED 'Classical Gas.' Personally, I like my version, or interpretation better as well. Classical Gas was a HUGE hit and it still sells. As much as I love Tommy, he has yet to reach the masses as Mason did.

100 % agree with you man. Messing with an already written song is much easier than creating a whole masterpiece such as mason williams did.
