  • Nigel's kilt just kills me.

  • The great Les Paul is looking at Nigel/Christopher like his is a raving moronic, bozo, lunatic! He has no idea who he is or what the Tap are about and why would he, he's a jazz guy. We miss you Les.

  • @chimptor50 I highly doubt that Les wasn't in on the joke.

  • Les Paul is damn good

  • @sublime88sublime but can his guitar goes to 11???

  • @sagganuts18 no, but his skill could go to 11

  • LOL, yes I am aware of that!

  • 0:33 = family guy?

  • I miss Dennis Miller being funny.

  • wait what? people think they actually were "dueling"? And more, people actually think Nigel is a "real" guitarist?

  • @perdagor LOL I know, isn't it funny, the joke just goes on and on....I'm not sure even Les knew who "Nigel" was really...until afterward I'm sure... from the interview it didn't seem like he did.

  • @perdagor hwy better nigel than madona or litle wyne.

  • @perdagor oh and by the way nigel is pretty on point though out the whole song

  • @perdagor you is idiot HE PLAY GUITAR BETTER THA U CAN SH8

  • @perdagor are yo uaware that he is a real guitarist...

  • RIP LP!

  • Was Nigel even plugged in? LOL!

  • @ReverendHogwash are you aware that Spinal tap is composed of real musicians, they actually wrote, played and performed every song on the movie, and their albums

  • les pauls les paul is this most badass les paul i have ever seen. And trust me i have seen some les pauls.

  • Was iy nigel tufnel that had an amp that went up to 11?

  • @KazysBobelis

What are you talking about man? You don't even have to be a guitarist to hear that les was in control of that duel. I didn't say Nigel wasn't decent at playing (because he's great), I just said les paul was obviously better, and if you have a problem with that I don't care.

  • Now we see that Les Paul turned it up to 12

  • Family Guy Theme! :D

  • Way too funny!

  • I think Guest acquitted himself quite well on this.

  • wheres the violin guitar solo?

  • the amplifier capo. hahaha x)

  • Not only was Les Paul a consummate guitarist, but he was the inventor of multi-track tape recording, double speed and half speed recording and various guitar effects that are the meat & veg of every rock guitarist these days.

  • but did les paul's go to eleven?

  • The sustain! :O

  • @davidcruz141 you can go and have a bite, and you'll still be hearing that one...

  • @thebatman101069 and if you need that extra kick live, you turn it up to eleven!

  • Sweet vid♠

  • did les paul just play the family guy theme?

  • @daggergblue

Haha yep I do, 'this is spinal tap' is my favourite film

  • I've played guitar and I would have been scared to pick a single note in Les's presence.

  • you think poor les knew this was a joke?

  • I heard Les wanted to play Stonehenge. Nigel declined since the stage didnt have the correct rigging. Or dwarves.

  • @tednugentlives yeah probably lol

  • Dennis Miller's hair!

  • I was totally shocked that Nigel could keep up at all. Les Paul was on fire.

  • @MrJLev

To be honest I dont think les paul's amp would be loud enough for a duel, since it only goes to 10

  • Happy Nigel Tufnel day, everyone.

    11 11 11

  • Best clip ever!

  • The world's most important guitar player.... playing with that loser Les Paul...

  • Its the 'Family Guy" song!

  • Nigel held his ground rather well. Must've been hard to share choppage with the man himself.

  • Am I the only one who is totally not interested in ever hearing a saxaphone?

  • @shaindaman13 Well, not like this... it's just typical... nothing really inventive about it...

  • 3:55 the luncheon meats have to be folded!

  • Nigel did pretty good considering he was playing with a true legend of the guitar.

  • Comment removed

  • great video. rip les paul =(

    love the kilt nigel, btw

  • @thebatman101069

Good point, but I still stick to what I said before. Because Christopher guest plays 'the average rock guitarist' in spinal tap, that's what "Nigel Tufnel" is.

  • Just goes to show how much of a master Les Paul was compared to the average rock guitarist, he knew the chord progression and melody inside out, but Nigel just had to use the same old pentatonic licks.

    RIP Les Paul

  • @Rickzenbackzer you mean the average comedic actor who plays guitar in a ficticious rock band?

  • @thebatman101069 right!?!?!?!

  • @thebatman101069 Exactly, and thank you for pointing that out.

  • @thebatman101069 Well, Chris Guest et al DID write all the material for Spinal Tap, so he's a little more than just a "comedic actor who plays guitar".

  • @thebatman101069 EXACTLY! LOL

  • @Rickzenbackzer How well do you think Les would have done if they had played Nigel masterpiece Lick My Love Pump?

  • @Rickzenbackzer Yea, you DO realize Nigel is actually Christopher guest; an actor who play a guitarist in a movie, right?

  • @Rickzenbackzer I am a guitarist and I approve that Nigel as a comedian playing guitar still did a pretty decent job. You should at least understand the situation before posting comments in the open

  • Nigel should have been more of a troll during the jam, it was embarrassing to hear him. Funny though.

  • yeah yeah but Nigel's amp goes to 11

  • 11/11/11 is Nigel Tufnel day. Celebrate it by taking that day to it's maximum elevenness!

  • Comment removed

  • Les is good, but could he play this song with a violin?

  • A wonderful clip! Thanks for sharing.

I'd love to hear what Chris Guest's actual thoughts were on getting to play with Les.

  • Spinal Tap Forever!!! Lol

  • It's like they're talking to each other WITH THEIR GUITARS.

  • RIP LES!

  • Christopher Guest plays Nigel SOO AMAZINGLY!!! He's so serious about his crazy ideas, that you just HAVE to take him seriously! "The new thing is an amp that goes to infinity... why put a limit? And a capo around an amp." Genius!

  • Nigel was playing a straight blues scale at times???..so he sounded just out of tone in places in places..but still a niece fun piece of music!! : )

  • @internetmadeusstupid why poor nigel, he got to play guitar with Les!

  • I invented the Scrotum Capo. You clamp it on-then you can sing like Steve Perry!

  • @stratman123 REALLY! I want one! I can never hit those high notes.

  • @stratman123

Graham Nash used to do that with a rubber band in CSNY. No joke.

  • Amp Capo. Hilarious!

  • Nigel gets rinsed by Les I have to say

  • @dillweed44 yea well, Nigel is not a jazz guitarist...

  • @dillweed44 I thought he did fairly decent for someone who doesn't play jazz..

  • The man who invented the electric guitar with the man who invented amps that go to 11...a match made in heaven.

  • @wuzcloopin Les Paul didn't invent the electric guitar.

  • @burmanmusic you are partially correct in saying so. rickenbackers frying pan lap steel could be seen as the first commercial electric guitar however the solidbody guitar was created by les pauls "log" guitar which gibson still own. invented multi-track recording aswell

  • U don't lift up a kilt

U don't let someone else lift up it either

    Not even a guitar player

    lol amazing people

  • Les's hands are freakin monstrous

  • being a guitar player myself for the past thirty years, anyone else i would be a bit competitive towards, but in the presence of the great Les Paul i'm sure to be truly humbled! thank you very much for giving us this gem!

  • how can one dislike this

  • @TheAlexkru I have no idea... cuz they dont get the joke? like people who think Nigel is a real person.

  • Two masters of the instrument.

  • I would love to see the rest of this interview.. This is great..

  • @DenPay that's all I had on my old tape... I don't know why it cut off when it did...

  • i love the sustain, i went out to get a bite to eat, and its still playing

  • Two Legends... One goes to eleven, the other went to heaven...

  • @timeoftroubles awesome.

  • @timeoftroubles Dude, that's beautiful

  • @Grees114

    :-)

  • they should call this guy : Sir Les Paul...he deserve it...eventhough......

  • Nigel is a monster and obviously made the right choice about playing in the Jazz world...

Man does Les look good! He was one cool cat!!!

I bet Nigel got that Gold Top signed!!

  • LESW PAUL is the greatest. ! He played a club in the Village, New York for a long time and I think he did it more for his own enjoyment then the audience.

Les Paul changed the whole history of Electric Guitars, and Recording.

    RIP Les.. Sir David

  • Is it just me or is Nigel chewing gum all the way through?

  • I bet paul was very in awe playing with Nigel.

  • god bless the wizard of waukesha, rip Les , thanks for everything, from a fellow wisconsin boy <3

  • Are you just going to SIT there and do nothing NigeL?

"Well...this is Les Paul...so...what would you do?" Nigel...you do indeed ROCK!...NOT Bad Nigel...Not bad at all!!

  • Are you just going to SIT there and do nothing NigeL?

"Well...this is Les Paul...so...what would you do?" Nigel...you do indeed ROCK!

  • an amplifier capo.. hilarious..

  • nigel had is amp turned up to 11 thats y you could hear it over everything else

  • les is thinking - "why am i here??"

  • Les Paul=Classy-ass mother fucker

  • Les had the lead ..all the time ... great clip

  • rip les paul, without him, the solid body metal guitar wouldn't exist

  • les paul is so lucky to play with Nigel Tufnel !!! i wish I was him

  • Comment removed

  • @dmine45 it's called a "joke"

  • He can play and he appears to be playing on a very fine '54 les paul which shows the man has taste... and money :)

  • I'm surprised Nigel can actually play hah

  • Hear the sustain? The kilt is maybe Douglas tartan?

  • @brianroger I wonder what the title of that song was? Lick My Love Pump part 2?

  • Comment removed

  • seems that les doesnt let the guy develop his solo.

  • Nigel said he hated Jazz lol. Hail to the great Les Paul. There are three Les Paul's in this video.

  • Did the amps go to 11?

  • Taking off the jokes and Being serious...... man hes so lucky to play wiht Mr. Les Paul i wish i was him

  • Since this is jazz, Derek Smalls should be here too. lol. he wrote that great jazz piece for a festival audience.....right before the puppet show. lol

  • @4JayeP HAHA... you can not do free flow jazz odyssey in front of a festival crowd...

  • @thebatman101069 i love that line and i love the audiene where there is one guy giving a thumbs down

  • @4JayeP This is jazz?

  • @HendrixcommaMartin more like blues actually, but sure... there's a riff, and then people improving over the chords...basic jazz.

  • haha still in character

  • i like the way they are playing through fender amps

  • for all the shit he talks, nigel sure is an alright jazz/blues guitarist

  • @mutinyvizeir

Too bad Dennis Miller is now a low grade moron sucking on the rightwing cock.

  • @EuthanizeReligion Dennis Miller is a low grade moron? Funny, I heard he was a Category 5 asshole.

  • Fantastic

  • the guy in the back playing the strat is a discrase to les paul and his amazing invention of the lespaul

  • @holyass242 haha, I never really noticed the guy in the house band... That's funny he's playing a strat with fucking Les Paul right there. They all should have been playing Les Pauls.. HAHA

  • @holyass242 What do you think Les Paul played before there was a LP style guitar?

  • @wraith88 look up ur history b4 u bash me. the les paul came out in 1952 the same year as the fender tele. the strat wasnt invented till 1954. les paul never played a strat

  • @holyass242 Chill out man! I'm not saying he played a stratocaster, but but he played all sorts of other guitars and I'm sure had his favorites before LPs were around.

  • @holyass242 actually you're wrong. the fender broadcaster came out in 1950, but gretsch had a line of drum kits with the same name and made them remove it so the guitars had no name for a while, and the name was changed to telecaster in 1952.

  • @holyass242

The telly and esquire were invented before the gibson les paul.

Les Paul, however, approached Gibson earlier with a design, but they rejected it,

they didn't start creating the guitar until they saw the succes of the telly en esquire

  • @holyass242 Why, Les Paul didn't give a damn. he thought the Strat was a great guitar. Even in the TV speical for tribute to Les Paul he was there and EVH came out and played his frankenstein superstrat. I think what Les is most proud of and EVH talked about this, is his invention of multitrack recording.

  • What kind of guitar is Nigel playing in this video? And who is the old guy with him? Slash and Kirk Hammet are the best guitarists ever. Fallout Boy also rule. Their lead guitarist has the most soul of any guitar player ever.

  • @mcspraycan what kind of guitar is nigel playing and who is the old guy? Please tell me you're kidding. As for the best guitarists ever, try listening to some Frank Zappa, and some Steve Vai.

  • @thebatman101069 ;) I am kidding thebatman, haha.. I do enjoy fishing though, thanks for the bight... Good video mate. I loved Spinal Tap and Les Paul is the man..

  • @mcspraycan haha, I was hoping it was a joke, I thought I was having an actual Spinal Tap moment with someone.

  • I have this video its slighly humorous and very charming

  • great video , thank for uploading

  • an amplifier kapo... too funny ;-)

... a fat man fell into an amplifier... hahaha

  • amplifier capo. Genius.

  • My mother was Les Paul's waitress about twice a week for ten years. She worked at a steakhouse called The Hanover Trail in Ramsey, New Jersey. Les lived in the next town over called Mahwah. My mother knew him when he was trying to retire. He always showed up with his best friend and neighbor, the great guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. She remembers them both enjoying retirement.... but they didn't want to retire.

  • Thanks for taking the time to find this, the batman. I really enjoyed it.

  • @tomthefunky You are very welcome... when Les passed away, I dug through my old vids for it because I remembered having it and it was nowhere to found on youtube or anywhere else...

  • Man this is a great video, thank you for the upload. Guitar legends, tasty licks and humour. If only there was more of this on TV these days.

  • @vdbdg you're very welcome... this was from the days of me recording all kinds of crap from tv, and when Les Paul died, I remembered having it on a video tape buried somewhere in my closet...

  • I hear ya. I got tons of old tapes like that back home. I could never erase any of it. There are always hidden gems there.

  • kept waiting for the violin, alas. . .

  • @fastrnb I was hoping the dwarf would come out and trod upon a small Stonehenge monument.

  • This is great. I'm only 26 so I wasn't aware of these sorts of things when they happened. I never thought something like this ever would have been.

Am I the only one that finds the fact that a joke band from almost 30 years ago, was better and had more talent than the vast majority of everything that's happened in the past 10 years?

    And people say we've progressed.

  • Yea, no kidding huh.

  • No, everybody "got it" at the pre-screening.

I'm sure that nobody thought it would have the popularity that it's had over the last 25+ years! It still holds up... I think you could release it now in 2009 and it really wouldn't look that dated.

There are still plenty of "Heavy Metal" bands out there that look, talk and act like the boys in "Tap."

  • In 1982 while I was living in Burbank, CA , a poll taker in a shopping mall asked my girlfriend and me if we would be interested in watching a movie about rock and roll. We said YES and got to watch one of the very first pre-screenings of "This Is Spinal Tap."

It was a pre-production version, but it was hilarious and we got to discuss it with the movie focus group. Rob Reiner was sitting right behind me so he could see our reactions. I almost said "Great movie, Meathead," but decided not to. :)

  • You should have, and also said Lenny was great, but where was Squiggy and the rest of the Squigtones?

So when you saw it, did you get it? or think it was a real documentary? I remember reading or hearing from an interview with Guest that some people thought it was real and they were just some retarded rock band so they didn't really like the movie.

  • "Heavy-duty rock and roll, brings out the duty in my soul."

  • well at least you're a Spinal Tap fan.

  • This is classic! LP, you are missed.

  • Thanks mortysand, at least someone appreciates it for what it is! Some people just don't get the joke I guess.
