unique band, the music takes u 2 another world. every album killztil they gave the name 2 another singer/band can,t dig it. without jon singing savatage iz dead.
@MattiasOfTheMetal I'd blame that more on the director than the camera man. Odds are there were a few camera operators shooting the show. The fault ultimately lies with a director who had no clue what was going on.
First time I saw them, they were just a 3 piece cover band playing the drama room at Tarpon Springs High School. Glad I got to see them again as Savatage.

that totally kicks royal butt man!! i totally though they were from Europe, or Germany even though i only lived about an hour from Tampa, Florida from in the late 80's, because their sound was anything but typical for America back then! totally amazing ! long live True Metal!!
Best Savatage combination i guess: Jeff Plate, JL Midleton, Criss Caferey & the BOSSs Jon Oliva & Criss Oliva !!! Best band of all times !!! Really miss them :( RIP Criss :'(

This is the best version of City I've ever heard...THAT scream at the beggining, too bad Jon voice didn't survive that much touring + alcohol and drug abuse..
@DTzerb Yah, well it's pretty difficult to be a rock-n-roller on the road and *not* partake in the alcohol and drugs. Hell, for many of us that is part of the reasons we did it!!!! LOL!
@MattiasOfTheMetal Wow, that's sick. I saw them on that same tour but Savatage went out like gangbusters... of course the show was here in Tampa so that might have had something to do with it. LOL!
@MattiasOfTheMetal While it is a shame that you didn't get to see them live while Criss was still alive, it's very cool that you're into them now. It is when music and art are passed down through generations that the artist achieves immortality. Your being into Savatage helps to keep the music of Criss alive and in a way, Criss himself. \m/
everybody noticed that picture on 1:53? - rhythm guys in formation headbanging, drummers stick above their heads and that awesome guitar kick sound from criss - thats my picture of the pure classic metal ...
the mighty "TAGE" will live in our metal hearts forever. one of best american metal bands ever. and they were nice dudes met them twice in rochester ny and they took time to talk and have a beer with me.
this is an excellant video. criss is awesome! but it seems most comments are about criss. jon is a great showman and the best vocalist i have ever heard. i saw jon olivas pain in 2008 and zak stevens joined him on stage and it was like a savatage concert. best metal show i have seen in years. long live savatage!!!
@blackmoresknight1 - Love the name! Blackmore does some cool stuff in that band.
Ok.
I think the reason why most of the comments are about Criss is that so many of his fans miss him and they're expressing it the only way they can here.
I agree that Jon is a monster on the vocals and in addition to that, he's always been a real nice guy.
The thing about the way he played is that you can have the exact same rig (minus the gargoyle guitar) and not sound like him. Its part rig, part wrists and the rest is heart & soul.
Criss was a way cool guy and I can't help but wonder what kind of music he'd be giving us now if he were still here.
I used to have this entire show but due to the less of a hard drive, it's gone for good.
I'm glad that you and the other people who have enjoyed this clip have had the chance to see it. As far as I know, I'm the only guy with this footage - at least on YouTube.
This is one band I truly miss. They did put out some good stuff after Criss passed but to me it was not Savatage. Savatage without Criss and Jon is not Savatage!!!
@brokensoul70 I miss Savatage too but man Jon had returned to Savatage after Criss's Death.... Criss Oliva is till dearly missed Jon still kept the band running till 2002 I believe and I wish they did reunite man Savatage was and will always be epic!
The CG figures I'm using for the guys in the band have had their heads shaped from photographs of the guys. They look pretty damn real. :) I don't want to say too much about what's in the video story wise but I will say there are ships, sirens, and ghost ships from the sail ship era. I think it's going to be cool but you never know.
This rocks big time. Savatage were so cool. Sirens is still one of my all time favourite albums. Great singer - he sounded so evil. Great guitar palyer.
I'm currently working on a 100% CG animated video for the song 'Sirens'. I have built CG versions of the guys and now I'm getting the story boarding process underway. With luck it'll be really cool. Keep your eyes open for it because if it goes over well enough I might made a few more.
Sorry you never had the chance to see them live 'in person' but at least you can see them via the net. I used to go see these guys when they were playing parking lots and skating rinks (back in their 'Avatar' days) - they were always a great live band. Way cool guys too.
The Unholy is an awesome tune. Also, Hounds is too but for some reason the 'album' version of the song doesn't do much for me but when I hear it played live it's a killer. Criss' outro solo flat out rips.
Cool deal. Thanks for the info. Conspiracy is a pretty good album. I like how even though they are somewhat the same band, MF and KD songs/albums have a very different feel to them.
I am very sorry my Metal friends...But after listening to this , it is become very clear that METAL is dead...Maybe someday it will come back to life...Until then, KEEP ON ROCKING TO SAVATAGE, You "Victims IN PaIN"...
Some of the best live Savatage video, what a performance! Really brought on a rush of memories of the RockIt Club, ML Chaser's & Coast to Coast studios BITD. Thanks for posting this. Would it be possible to get a copy of this entire show?
Tremendous footage both audio AND video! Which tour was this from? Criss Oliva gave a blistering assault with his 6 string! Those two are about the heaviest and most brutal songs they ever recorded. Excellent to watch them played almost as one song! Garth McNamee will be one of those in the City Beneath the Surface! He robbed us of a metal god. R.I.P. Criss and thanks Fretslayer for the upload! Unmatched!
I'm going to try and get the rest of the footage I have from this show posted here as soon as I can.
