  • I haven't even been born yet, but this is one of the greatest albums ever made, by one of the best American rock bands ever. Why aren't they in the Hall of Fame? They were one of the, if not THE, best guitar tandem/band I ever saw live. The 8 track changed tracks during the keyboard part of this song, so kind of killed the great build up in dynamics. Great music.

  • Would get nice and high in my room when I was in 7th grade and crank this album and especially this song on my 8 TRACK CASSETTE. Amazing music and still is! Timeless!

  • Just too cool!!!

  • Just brilliant!!!!

  • CLASSIC!!

  • While always being a fan of Styx, this song has to be my favorite.

  • @samlo098 It does suck....... I'm 11 and this is my all-time favorite band........ STYX!!!!!

  • @mrchaserman34 No it does not suck. I am 50 and grew up on this music (saw Styx 3x) and I would rather be headed into High School than be headed into my senior years. You have YouTube. Do well and enjoy the life ahead of you. It goes by fast. Trust me.

  • Great song... and.. The Alchemist is a fucking genius! the sample is "Surgical Gloves" (Raekwon) is so great! the best sample EVER!

  • Hey, This song is like, SACRED.

  • Hey ds2jim, You're a F*&KING Genius! Man in the Wilderness & Castle Walls are the two greatest tunes this band ever did! Suite Madam Blue is Third! PLEASE DON'T EVER MENTION "MR. ROBOTO"!!!

  • @conan0869 "A Song For Suzanne" is 2nd in my opinion.

  • @conan0869 what about fooling yourself? that's my all time favorite

  • terrific song off of a really great album! my second favorite after "Man in the Wilderness."

  • It's only Classical.

  • Read all the comments about the "Halloween " theme song was stolen from this song and they did sound very similar so I sped up Castle walls at 2:40 and they are Identical !!!

  • Gran Illusion Tour was one of the best concerts I ever went to

  • I like this music so well, I use it to hum my 1 year old grandson to sleep! As soon as I start, he relaxes.

  • Definitely one my faves from Styx... Brings back memories

    . Great classic

  • Found the CD of this album in my dad's old things. I popped it in and I LOVED it.

  • every song on the album is gold!! 10/10. Why aren't these guys looked upon as America's greatest rock band?

  • BIG THUMBS UP!

  • ytf would someone find and view this video, then decide they didn't like it, and mark it with a dislike just so they can comment on something they fail to understand. go find sonmething you like and promote it instead of dissin everyone else's music

  • Maybe Christina Aguilera needs to be thrown off of Styx's Castle Walls?

  • @Ovrkyl Excellent idea. =]

  • From Pieces of Eight to Grand Illusion & beyond, STYX has always been a great band!!

  • @oldmanshredder I became uninterested when Mr Roboto came out.

  • 52 and still loving this band. Taking my 20 yr old daughter to see them in Feb. She loves them too!

  • ONLY BUILT FOR CUBAN LINX PT 2 Brought me here : )

  • @PrevueGuideChannel why? Is there a similar sound in her Halloween movies? I haven't seen them.

  • Wow i feel so old. I remember when this album came out. I was in grade 7 and everything was so exciting. The high school dances, the cute first girlfriend, the rush every time we danced like we were transported into another world and nobody else existed. The excitement of every phone call. Why did that have to end.

  • Dennis deyoung was turning styx to a love song band, He was a mistake after 84'

  • 3:45

  • now I know when John got his them song for Halloween

  • jim jones- only one way up

  • Takes me back. Thank you Styx for helping forge my musical existence

  • When I first listened to this song at the end of the solo it gave me shivers up my spine.

  • am I an idiot I have this classic album,who doesn't?...u?

  • This was classic Styx if you are old enough to remember, if you were not ( sucks to be you ) . They are one of Americas great rockers !

  • @samlo098 I remember turning my whole neighborhood on too Styx; and live, man were they freaking great.

  • @samlo098 Thank you....at least i'm not the only one who remembers classic Styx :)

  • @samlo098 It does suck to be me because I wasn't around then. But I didn't have to be to know this is where the rock is at!!! & that Styx are one of America's greatest rockers.

  • @samlo098 hey. be nice. I'm only 15 and I practically worship these guys.

  • my god. this is the first time i herd this song, freaking awesome

  • if you havent heard this cranked in quad yer missin it. i had an alpine system with everyting possible in 87, probably better tone than the top notch now. balanced no thug thug base. insanely intense when the bell tolls its defining. its like a mozart piece on steroids. the best they ever did, musically.

  • I type in Castle Walls in the search bar and see Christina Aguilera, WTF IS THIS?

  • @SerasxAlucard The styx, and YOU ARE WELCOME.

  • @billtree52 I meant that WTF is with this Christina Aguilera girl...

I don't always refer to memes on youtube but when I do, someone doesn't get it D: LOL

  • @SerasxAlucard Well granted I just got outta basic, so I'm not exactly up on the memes these days guy. haha

  • @billtree52 It happens ;D

Out of basic? Well, welcome back soldier!

  • @SerasxAlucard Thanks man.

  • @billtree52 woman* :) But it's cool ;D

  • @SerasxAlucard Oh even better! haha :)

  • @SerasxAlucard something waaay more epic than Christina Aguilera could ever be.

  • @Hijetala WTF IS THIS as in Why is Christina Aguilera doing in my search for Castle Walls. ;D

  • Does anyone else feel this song should get much more airplay than it does? Truly amazing!

  • gowan is great and so is deyoung but the new styx cant just be shaw he needs to let gowan get into his crimmanal mid stuff and contribute

  • @johnyg2011 I honestly never go negative on youtube! It is stupid and pointless.......So I will just say this, Styx is Styx, I Love Dennis alone doing Styx and I love JY and Tommy doing Styx.....But letting Gowan create within Styx will NEVER be Styx. He is a good musician, but he IS NOT and Never Will Be Dennis Deyoung and even Tommy and JY know that. Everyone is happy because everyone knew studio Styx was Dennis....Live Styx was Tommy and JY....everyone is happy....But real true Styx is dead!

  • 2:40 best part

  • I'm smoking a bowl right now.

  • go Styx

  • haunting

  • I love this song and album. One of the reasons I love Styx is because they remind me of Lord Of The Rings and all that great art like that that was coming out in the 70s like Rodney Mathews and Roger Dean.

This song really takes me there.

  • @griffinmatter ...I agree. I was in high school when Styx released

this album. I miss those days when true rock musicians ruled...

none of this crappy hip-hop/bimbo-diva/pretty boy trash we have

    today.

  • I used to listen to this album while my parents weren't around.....I was born in 1979, by the way, and the album was my Mom's.....they just hated when I would f*** with their record player, that's all!

  • Not one bad song on this abum. It's great. also, who puts this and miss america on a side B?

  • I grew up woth Styx and I have to say that it still sounds great!

  • at 2:40 sounds like a horror movie what was it halo-ween or Friday the 13th?

  • @biggthree1 I think Halloween.

  • @biggthree1 I agree it sounded like something out a horror movie. It was Halloween, the guy named Michael Myers that sounded like his theme in that part. I agree with you 100%!

  • sitting around with friends and smoking a fat one and just chilling to tommy shaw was the best times music has no boundaries

  • did alchemist use this alredy???????????????

  • @braulio751 Raekwon beat sample YEAHH!!!

  • One of the best songs ever!

  • Listening to early Styx like Best Thing, Crystal Ball, Castle Walls, etc., it's hard to believe it's the same band that put out that piece of crap Kilroy Was Here with Mr. Roboto. DDY totally killed the magical vibe that made them so great. Babe? Please. Hardly up there with earlier TRUE classics.

  • @4everColReb

I agree - that Kilroy album had a couple of good songs, but no magic!

  • Dayum, this song gave me the chills when I started singing the lyrics.

  • What a stunning song it is when looking back in a rock era of 1970s. Dear castle wall sung by Styx, since that time, I was there and my heart belonged to you; now it does and is one of my forver favorites, as Tmmy Shaw, the guitarist can bring me always...likewise.

  • sweet organ in this song

  • STYX--''CASTLE WALLS''

  • 2:36 on, i try'd laying some wrc footage over the top. very cool..

  • Styx had a short window of good albums - this was one of them.

  • @JollyPandaImports That and Pieces of Eight..the pinnacle of their success

  • First classic rock song i actually heard. I had the lyrics memorized in first grade.

Always loved the effect of the chime. If you pay attention, the beat stays exactly on time throughout the entire song.

  • If John Carpenter can rip them off For Halloween Styx Kicks ass!!!

  • Alchemist

  • Fabulous works! As fresh today as it was in 77!

  • Sounds like Amy Holland-She's on fire from Scarface OSt

  • far beyond these castles walls are 3 idiots

  • ahhhh, goosebumps

  • LLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOYYYYY JENKINS

  • dippppsseetttt

  • The sample for Hollow Points is amazing!

  • Hardest bass and left-hand keyboard harmony ever.

  • Did Halloween steal from them.... Or did they steal the theme from Halloween???

    We shall never know!

  • @JanisJoplin70sGirl

Grand Illusion album came out in 1977 - Halloween came out in 1975 - there's your answer - but it sure sounds good in this song -

  • @LadyMoondancer Halloween came out in 1978

  • @matacon2

sorry it so long to get back to you - I couldn't remember my youtube password!

anyway - I stand corrected. I checked Imdb - and the movie did come out in 1978.

  • My favorite song By one of my favorite bands...

  • man Im just 14 and I know this song kicks major ass and may this be a calling to those with children. Please have them listen to styx before they get sucked in to society's mindless pop culture of jonas brothers, justin beiber, and disney channel.

  • This song still kicks ass!

  • EXCELLENT TRACK!!!!!

  • @MrMegaFredzeppelin

Like the jazz guitar licks too.

  • Their best,,,period.

  • @harleyrdr664: the reference to pink floyd is to gilmours guitar work sounding very similiar to the guitar work in this song...thats all nbd!

  • STYX---''CASTLE WALLS''

  • This song... so perfect.

  • great, great band!

  • one of my favorite Styx songs

  • rubber soul is the best

  • not greatest band but this was of the best alltime albums

  • My 19 year old daughter is sittiing here. She says she does'nt like most of the music I grew up with yet she is tapping her toe to his, and suddently says, it's very gothic, I love it...lol..PS...'m 53...

  • Grand Illusion Styx is the best Album along with Boston's debut Album I remember in July 1977. I bought both on 8 Track Tape. They were the first in a series of Progressive Rock Groups I collected from the late 1970's which included Kansas,Journey,REO Speedwagon,Toto,Foreigner,Etc.

  • @BBQFanNo1 I could not agree with you more.

  • This is one of the best Styx songs of all time! The lyrics, vocals, & instrumentation together are just phenomenal. This is a timeless classic!

  • Killer bass intro, one of Chuck's best ever!

  • @daviemmproc111 you have a sense of humour mate...obviously.

  • This is the perfect song...... really it is! The lyrics, vocals, synths, guitars, drums, bass, and production are just fucking amazing. A top achievment in modern music!

  • dang soo many rap samples in this

  • First time I did mushrooms was the first time I heard this song. wow what a masterpiece.

  • That's cool, I can imagine. :-) I had never listened to this song back in the day when doing shrooms. I wish had now!

  • That's cool, I can imagine. :-) I had never listened to this song back in the day when doing shrooms. Now I wish I had. Pink Floyd's The Wall was my first music experience while doing hallucinogens.

  • That's cool, I can imagine. :-) I had never listened to this song back in the day when doing shrooms. Now I wish I had. It would be a perfect album to listen to on shrooms. ;-)

  • "Far beyond these castle walls

Where I thought I heard Tiresias say

Life is never what it seems

And every man must meet his destiny"

What a great lyricsl line. Now everyone look up the reference!

  • "Down by the bay where the Moon-lit water falls. I stood alone while the minstrel sang his song. There in the fog his song kept calling me; Leading me on with its haunting melody. Deep in my heart a voice kept echoing, I knew I'd soon be wandering . . ." -nice to see others dig on this too ... surreal ...

  • One of my favourite Styx songs. Their music has stood the test of time... this song still hits me on an emotional level that I love feeling.

Some other bands I used to like... eh, not so much now... I won't drop names for the sake of politeness... ;)

Anyway, Styx was my first "Favourite Band" from when I was little and I loved this song then. And I still grooved to it today! I love the Pink Floyd-ish-ness of the theme. It feels so EPIC!

I would love to hear Metallica or Rush cover this song.

  • I used to imagine that was Michael Myers at the beginning of the song breathing in his mask... oooh, still gives me chill bumps!!!

  • I love Styx, so many great songs, good variety. most of it is happy music.

  • sooo many rap songs samples this

    dipset has 5 songs lol

  • @byrdgyme2k8 Whats one of the songs ? I know they sampled this, but I forgot the name of it.

  • @AMLite09 i tell you all 5 of them

    DipSet - Only Way Up

    Camron - Purple Haze intro

Juelz Satana - Back Like Cook Crack

    Jim Jones - Hustle

    Jr Writer - Reloaded

  • @byrdgyme2k8 You forgot the best one of all by FAR. The Alchemist sampled this when he made, "Surgical Gloves" by Raekwon off of the only built 4 cuban lynx pt 2 album

  • @OGtony88 Yeah that shit is crack!!

but i was talking about dipset not wu tang hence way i didnt mention it

  • @byrdgyme2k8 Why thank you sir.

  • @byrdgyme2k8 It's crazy how all 5 songs used the exact same piece of the sample. -_____- In Raekwon's Surgical Gloves, it was sampled in such a different way. The only one of Dipset's sample to this that I fucks with is JR Writer's version. Those European dudes that were rapping in it did work.

  • @AMLite09 you think so?

i think only way up was the best because i never realised it was sampled from this

& your right raekwon fliped it nicely

either way they all go hard hard in one way or another

  • One of the best Styx songs of all time!

  • this is one bad assed tune, so beautiful, yet haunting witha floyd type guitar in the mix...pure genuis!

  • @giffworks I would agree with that.... :) I hear a bit of guitar that sounds like David from Floyd. Good call :)

  • @giffworks dude i love Styx too

, but as a guitar teacher i simply must ask,

where r you going with the floyd comment?

    i prefer the khaler myself

, but how is it making any dif at all? please enlighten me

  • The Bridge is EPIC!

  • it's sad that the one person missed the dislike button...

  • GOD I love this song!! and no it's NOT the Halloween theme.

  • GOD I love this song!!

  • this is probably their best song all the other shit is gay commercial shit

  • THE new artist now and these days copy this song. lil wayne- she's on fire, jim jones- only one way up, EVEN Halloween lol. THIS IS a great song. 3 awesome solo transitions in one song.

  • is it just me or does the solo sound like Halloween!

  • @JanisJoplin70sGirl Haha! omg it does!

  • The solo is just so perfect. Its just as haunting as the song.

  • epic bassline

  • i checked these guys out and there actually pretty good

  • @tripleH1313 DEEP...when music did not have a lot of depth

  • Agreed that this is one of the most underrated songs by Styx.

    Always one of my favorites.
