ditch the distortion pedal, and just go with a straight boost/overdrive pedal and get that nice raw marshall sound. your set up almost make it sound like a solid state...then again, this could just be because of video sound quality
Are you using an RP500? Or any digitech pedal? I'm thinkin about buying this half stack and I already have an RP500 I'm looking for someone to help me set up my settings, I'm really bad at that, I just started playing guitar and it takes me like 2 hours to find a half decent tone.
I am using a Boss GT 8 on the amp switching between channels with different set ups on the effects pedal...I had it modded by Voodoo amps and the heavy tone is all amp except the tube screamer in front to even push the amp further...the screamer is on all the time and everything is set up around it....
everybody mods amps, waste of money, there is NOTHING that cant be done with 1. tubes 2. pedals 3. EQ to an amp.. I guarentee it.. I have been playing stock marshalls for almost 30 years..I can get any sound under the sun... Spend less money and more time practicing..
Nice tone!! What are your settings? Are you running your effects through the effects loop? Also, do you have a pedals boosting the distortion or is that just the amps distortion?
The jcm 900 is a 2 channel amp,I had my gt 8 set up to switch between each channel ,then I had the gt 8 running through the loop,I had everything as far as eq on 10 except the presence..I had chorus at times and delay too, I had a tube screamer, and as I changed presets up and down it also changed with the disortion boxes I had for that preset..I have since give the gt 8 to my eldest son and lost all settings on it.....Ray
Honestly,I wouldn't buy it...I would buy a 5150 0r 6505 plus...they are great amps...but that is me.... do some research on here and check out alot of amps...depending on what style you like and play too....
I was wondering if the digitech gnx3 was capable of doing this too??? If so how would you go about programming it to do that??? Thank you very much!!!
I'm thinking about sending my amp to voodoo amps to get it modded to the platnum mod when I get some cash, I have the 4100 with 6L6's (I'd get it switched to EL34's also).
Do you reckon it's worth the hefty price tag (I only paid $1100 for my amp, so it'd still be cheaper than if I had've bought a new one)
I love how they offer their mods to international customers, it's hard to find people that'll do it for Australians.
They look bloody awesome, but idk, I have a soft spot for Marshalls, the look of them gives me that good feeling, the sound is just a bonus, and I love the way they sound when modded.
Cool, I might have to check one out, but I don't think I'll be buying a new amp any time soon. I got my JCM900 back the other day, and it sounds even better than I remember. Honestly sounds like Marshall have tried to copy the tones early thrash bands were getting by modding their JCM 800's.
I think you would be better off selling the JCM900 and trading up for an amp you really like for that much money. I'm happy with my Voodoo modded 6505+, and it cost me around 300US for the basic mod...any more and I would have gotten a different amp. Check out Heyboer output trannys too. They're very good, and a lot cheaper. IMO, the OT will make a difference, as will adding a choke, but the PT doesn't need to be replaced.
I would just get a Dagnal clone output tranny from metroamp and a heyboer 5H choke. Also, I think you might like Electro Harmonix' 6ca7 fat bottles or JJ KT77s better than EL34s in that amp; they're still beam tetrode, but sound a little more like EL-34s to my ear. Keep in mind Voodoo's mods aren't "one-offs". They have one standard mod for each type of amp, so the mods they do to your amp, will most likely be optimized for 6L6s.
I'd like to keep my 900, it's got the base sound I'm looking for, I'm just trying to find the little bit it's missing. But recently I've been thinking less about mods, and more about just upgrading stuff like the caps and transformers, which need to be done anyway. I was gonna get Mercury trannys, but I'm not exactly sure about which caps.
Do you have any idea of what capacitors would be best?
it really depends on the sound you're going for. Sozo premiums are a good Mustard recreation. Id recommend them in the tonestack and right before the PI, but I'd use Sprague orange drops every where else. Honestly though, I'd ditch the 900. Even if you're going to have ti modded, there's better out there. If you want to mod something, talk to Dave Friedman at Racksystems about the tone you're going for. I'd recommend the custom45 or the hairy browneye.
As I said below, I've now found the tone I like from the 900. I honestly reckon the 900 is one of the best amps out there from Marshall to come from the factory ready for metal, the JCM 800 is far superior, but the 900 can be plugged into directly, and doesn't need the volume dimed to get the great tone. I'm keeping it, and I'ma stay using some different Marshalls for a long time to come. And I'll check out the sozo premiums (I'm going for a brightish, balenced sharp 80's overdrive)
Ok, by all means, go with what works for you. This is a good tone. Keep in mind though, this amp isn't voiced for EL34s and you might not like what you wind up with as a result of the swap. I've tried other stuff in the Peavey 5150 and it didn't turn out so great.
Whoa, I had a flashback to Beavis and Butthead..."Give me those nachos and fruity whips and I might not kick your asses!" hehehe...hehehe...Todd is so cool!"
i know that the 4100 uses diode clipping on the distortion channel. that means that some of the gain is solid state, so its not a "true" tube amp. the SLX is virtually the same thing, except the solid state clipping is replaced with a preamp tube. so in theory, the SLX is a true tube amp. obviously there is a difference in tone as well, the 4100 sounds a bit more "processed", where the SLX has more of an organic tone. im not sure about the 2100, it might have something to do with reverb..
I have the gt8 set up for just effects only and the ctrl is set up for channel switching...I don't have it anymore now..I sent it out to my son in Utah...I had it set up for delay, chorus, reverb, and a distortion...the dist. was the metal zone...I would kick it in every now and then to get that rectifier tone, when I kick it off that is when it is the amps dist. the clen is just my rythym channel.. and the slightly dirty is the clean channel and the metal zone..it was set very lightly on dist.
Trace at Voodoo Amps did an Amazing job..I just barely got it back that day and we played that night no time to set up my processor for the new modifacations..the lead side is what I'm using.the floor effects are set for stomp boxes only gt 8...I had the tube screamer set for extra gain and it altered my tone so I just use my amp alone now awesome job by Trace at VooDoo Amps...Thankx for your kind words and comments
it is just my amp and my channell switching...the only thing I have on during my dist. channel is a tube screamer...on my clean side is alittle delay and tube screamer
OMG...Hi Annie...long time no hear or see..Thankx so much for the kind words ... they do great work Mike I love my Marshall now..as you might be ables to tell it sounds awesome.. the first reall distorted tone it the marshall and the second one in which I tap on the od is for whe I play stuff like zz top and classic rock but as you can hear the original signal of the Marshall is freaking awesome
Yeah' I've kinda backed away from too many gears' ... just tryin to develope my sound' and the kiss method really seems to werk fer mi ehhhhh'... ME' lol ;')
I've gigged since I was 16 and I'm 50 now and those days of carring equipment for days because that looks cool no way man I have downsized to an amp guitar and processor

Is it just the amp + the tubescreamer on the GT8 at 0:51?
Sounds VERY close to the tone in my head.
Also, how much difference is there to a stock 900 and a modded one like yours? Gainwise, as well as cleanwise.
Nice chops by the way.
