Back then, post world war, people were questioning themselves. They wanted to understand where they were going. In 2012, we have regressed. We want to be ignorant, to be stupid as stupid can be.
dear mr 70sHorrorRealm, allow me to introduce myself. i am your guide to the glitteratti, 8T:T5FOD!, i just want to point out to your viewers that this movie was actually covertly funded by the CIA as one of their clandestine sub projects of MKULTRA that was geared towards the domestic arena. it is all covered in my book. to watch it means to be experimented upon. fair warning. read the book. the truth is out there. way out there.
Don Porter (Sanford) will always be Prof Lawrence, Gidget's dad, to me. I am surprised that no one has ever made a zombie surfer movie. Just think of the dialogue, and sharks would be no problem. I will never forget Roy Thinnes from The Invaders, when he looked at his red glowing hands (probably just backlight by flashlight, but terrifying). Horror was subtle and suggested back then; just enough information for one's own mind to conjure very personal fear.
Great TV movie/pilot. Too bad the series never came about. Would've been nice to find out what actually happened to David Norliss. Angie Dickinson is kind of wasted in this film----no sexy scenes! She was better (and naked) in '74's Big Bad Mama.
They were JUST talking about this on THE NIGHT CREW podcast. They have the DVD on NETFLIX, but I might watch it here. I really wanted to see it. HUGE NIGHT STALKER fan. Exciting!
RPenta nailed it, it's the ATMOSPHERE Curtis created with this great movie and the "king" of vampire movies "The Night Stalker". Like Carpenter in the original "Halloween", he didn't have to rely on blood/gore.
I remember seeing this around 1974,when I was twelve. Saw it on our ABC affiliate here in Halifax,Nova Scotia,Canada. We had just gotten cable TV early in September of that year. Suddenly having ABC and NBC was a big deal to us way back then(we now had a PBS affiliate too).Cable gave us four new channels, three from the USA. I watched this movie on a Saturday night and it was well done for its time, creepy. I think it was an ABC Movie of the Week. Cable gave us seven channels!!
MsBooda77: The Norliss Tapes is on DVD. I have it. Ordered it from Amazon.com I love this movie, uses suspense rather than blood/gore to scare you, like the original Halloween and The Night Stalker, Psycho.
This movie brings back so many memories. I'll never forget viewing this film with my mom. My dad was working late-graveyard shift-and this flick freaked me out. This is a classic. My first experience with the supernatural; I was only 8 years old. I haven't been right since.
They cannot make movies like this anymore: why? 1: Do not have the producers like Dan Curtis with the feel for the "atmospherics"; 2: Everything has been naturalized so there is no more "supernatural"-just vampires with angst; 3: Do not have the character actors to pull this off except at maybe the highest levels of Hollywood-I wish Tim Burton good luck casting the new Dark Shadows movie beyond Barnabas and Angelique.
I noticed that besides Dan Curtis and Bob Cobert's soundtrack, Claude Atkins was the sheriff from the Original Night stalker movie(he must have been transferred from Vegas)-ha-ha Also noticed that the trucker who finds the car wreck was the same actor who played Janos Skorzeny's car dealer(Fred Hurley) in Night Stalker.
Thank you for posting this! The scariest movie experience I ever had was watching this on tv back in the mid/late 70's as a kid. Been looking for this one. Looking forward to watching it once more!!
Ahh. I knew this sounded familiar. Two things Dark Shadows related. Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis produced and directed this and Roy Thinnes played Roger Collins in the 1991 revival series of Dark Shadows. Saw this film advertised in a movie catalog and wanted to see it. Thank you for uploading.

One of my favorite Curtis films of the period and produced as a pilot. To bad it did not become a regular series.
