quick answer to Rh's question. Depending on the range, velocity, and size of round, whatever comes near it will be effected. I have heard from a buddies experience in Afghanistan that a shot that was taken at roughly 3/4 of a mile. According to him the target (the engine block of a vehichle that diddnt stop when ordered to) was speeding to a road block when the round hit the block it ricochet'd through the console ripping half of the drivers head off. i have heard of several similar events.
I want to know a simple question which some of you may be able to answer , could the barret .50 cal cause a human body to explode (with humans being around 70-80% water) i'm sure it is capable of that , and also , is there any gun which would cause a human to die with it being shot within 1 meter of them ? , Thanks

Based on what I've seen on YouTube, our military is amazingly well-equipped and trained. If we are facing insurgents with AK-type assault rifles and RPG weapons, it's like 1960s weaponry vs. 2000 weaponry. The amount of firepower we have available at the squad/fire team level seems to be about 10x that available in Korea and 5x that available in 'nam.
its more about tactics. we dont have the best tactics for dealing with rebellions, hit and run, farmer by day rebel by night, and stuff like that. we cant pacify the local population, especially because they are being funneled weapons and sometimes troops from other places. its like the revolutionary war, we are like the english, and we cant win. btw, i wouldnt base any estimates of our military off of youtube, but thats just me

Use of this weapon is primarily anti-personnel sniper system, unlike the M-2 .50, which is vehicle mounted. Current ROE prohibits the M2 from being used on personnel unless its all you have. As for the shooter, he should get used to using the system without a sleeping pad under him....train how you fight.
ROE doesn't expressly prohibit the M2 being used against personnel, but it does discourage it. It's not really an issue of "it's all you have." It's more of an issue of what's going to save your life. I'd say about half of the gun trucks are still outfitted with the M2 as of my most recent deployment, July 2009. I used the mat because I was on a range and maintaining your uniform and appearance is still required in a combat zone.

Think about it... you're firing a machine gun at someone... it's not a movie. If eliminating the threat means shooting the person then that's the action you're going to take. It's a split second decision, and I doubt you're going to be worried about whether you're hitting the person or the engine compartment.

@USFISTER The weapon is an anti-material sniper weapon system, it's not specified for shooting trucks versus insurgents or vice-versa. The weapon is designed so that it *can* take out vehicles, its primary cause is in fact stopping vehicles but that means a lot of things:
@USFISTER shooting the engine compartment, shooting the driver, shooting an IED in the backseat, shooting a bird out of the sky so it lands on the window of a commercial airplane so that it crashes into the side of a building causing it to collapse into it's support beams onto the road taking out the backseat of his car, blowing up the IED in the backseat, exploding the vehicle and killing the driver. There is no specification except get the job done.

@generationKILL29 I wasn't a sniper. I was a forward observer and one of my platoon mates was issued the rifle as a designated marksman for the company he was attached to. He didn't go to sniper school or qualify. He zeroed and shot for training but didn't qualify.

Based on what I've seen on YouTube, our military is amazingly well-equipped and trained. If we are facing insurgents with AK-type assault rifles and RPG weapons, it's like 1960s weaponry vs. 2000 weaponry. The amount of firepower we have available at the squad/fire team level seems to be about 10x that available in Korea and 5x that available in 'nam.

its more about tactics. we dont have the best tactics for dealing with rebellions, hit and run, farmer by day rebel by night, and stuff like that. we cant pacify the local population, especially because they are being funneled weapons and sometimes troops from other places. its like the revolutionary war, we are like the english, and we cant win. btw, i wouldnt base any estimates of our military off of youtube, but thats just me

Use of this weapon is primarily anti-personnel sniper system, unlike the M-2 .50, which is vehicle mounted. Current ROE prohibits the M2 from being used on personnel unless its all you have. As for the shooter, he should get used to using the system without a sleeping pad under him....train how you fight.

ROE doesn't expressly prohibit the M2 being used against personnel, but it does discourage it. It's not really an issue of "it's all you have." It's more of an issue of what's going to save your life. I'd say about half of the gun trucks are still outfitted with the M2 as of my most recent deployment, July 2009. I used the mat because I was on a range and maintaining your uniform and appearance is still required in a combat zone.

@RATM582 False? Depends on the commander's ROE and escalation of force. Some commanders encourage disabling the vehicle but some say if you're gonna shoot, then shoot to kill. Think about it... you're firing a machine gun at someone... it's not a movie. If eliminating the threat means shooting the person then that's the action you're going to take. It's a split second decision, and I doubt you're going to be worried about whether you're hitting the person or the engine compartment.

Thats what the barret was made 4, armor piercing, but snipers arent suposed to be use in firearm combat, its suposed to be a spotter and a gunner camping from a distance , stopping an important vehicle

@generationKILL29 I wasn't a sniper. I was a forward observer and one of my platoon mates was issued the rifle as a designated marksman for the company he was attached to. He didn't go to sniper school or qualify. He zeroed and shot for training but didn't qualify.
