1. no it doesn't hurt at all, its just REALLY uncomfortable because you can't swallow your spit, a machine (like, a tube thingy) has to do it for you, and your mouth starts to ache after awhile because it takes long time to put them in.
2. It depends on how bad your teeth are. I had such a bad overbite, and spaces inbetween my molars, so i needed mine for 5 years. The average time is 4 years. I'm getting then off on JANUARY 5TH!!!!! SO EXCITED!
You'll be fine! The only this is, when you get them tightened, you can't eat for like, a day because it will hurt to touch your teeth, but its not that bad.
