  • well.... ummmm....... yea......

  • Frank Black has an amazing voice.

  • @REVOLUBE On the records yes, but his voice live is generally pretty weak.

  • @0TheBestMan When I saw them just after they got back together, his voice was great.

  • I'm reading the comments below. Kim Deal can't sing? first Breeders album was unlistenable? Imagining how Deal & Thompson would fare on American Idol? Christ, what a world we live in.

  • What a great response. She makes 100% sense. She was the bass player. She wrote Gigantic, presented it to the band, and the whole band liked it enough to add it on Surfer Rosa. They weren't saying, "Alright, now Kim's the lead singer." They just liked the tune and everyone else made a big deal about it because it reached whatever on the pop charts.

  • Kim's Mom voice rocks! I lol'ed!

  • This is pathetic. Kim Deal was never anything really...she can't sing and barely gets by playing bass. She was simply that "oh wow, a girl's in the band" factor. Big deal, pun intended. This was Black Francis' band...he wrote most of the material. Even Santiago was questionable. What made the Pixies great is that they made a garage band sound exceptional at times. Just my opinion. Then Black made of the best solo albums of all time. He's the talent and always was.

  • @DickLodge68

Santiago is more important then you give credit for. His sound is so unique as are Blacks vocals. Kim is just cool as shit.

  • @joed88 I first started loving the Pixies in..oh jeez...1989? Santiago has a "unique" way of playing...based upon more noise and effects than actual playing ability. I've been playing guitar almost 30 years now so I know a little about the subject. Most guys simply went goo-goo because a girl was playing bass. Big Deal (hehee). She simply cannot sing. Can you imagine how fast she'd be out on American Idol? Funny, no one mentions Lovering, who was fantastic on the skins.

  • @DickLodge68 You may not like or even know these others I'm about to mention. Tricky was the talent, sucked after getting rid of Martina Topley Bird. Sneaker Pimps sucked after asking Kelly Dayton to leave. Morcheeba sucked after kicking Skye Edwards out. Frank slipped into obscurity while Kim enjoyed a rise to stardom after the Pixies and that speaks in volumes. Frank might have been talented but Kim knew what was sexy about the music and what we wanted to hear. Neither is any Pavarotti.

  • @Vlaxitov Frank, Francis, Charles was the driving force of the Pixies. After he left he created one of the best solo albums of all time! Self-titled..Frank Black. The was brilliant and every song was good. Yet Kim Deal did what The Breeders? Give me a break...that simply sucked and proved where the talent was in the Pixies.

  • @DickLodge68

Kim Deal did what?, she went platinum while remaining on the same label as the pixies.

    Pixies - gold

    Breeders - platinum

Frank Black - two albums on 4AD before bouncing around back and forth from label to label and that "solo" album you're touting is actually a colaberation with eric feldman. Now I'm not saying black sucks. I'm saying that when you say how much better he is than deal that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the record sales disagree with yours.

  • @Vlaxitov Then rod stewart is better than the pixies because he sold more records. Leave sales and popularity out of conversations about talent.

  • @Vlaxitov The Breeders went platinum because they played "Cannonball" to death on the radio! Conversely, Frank Black got virtually no air-play. And I could care less about who stayed with one label or not. That's the suits playing money games. That first Breeders album was almost un-listenable....while Frank Black is simply one of the best solo feats I've ever heard. Yes, just an opinion...you have your's and that's great!

  • @DickLodge68 The first breeders album was the best imo. It had tanya donelly and you could tell. My favorite song by them is also on that album. They played cannonball to death because it was catchy and got your foot. BTW, can you imagine how black francis would do on american idol? Worse than Kim imho. I said something similiar previously, shes no ann wilson and hes no mike patton. Neither can sing that well, again imho, so that leaves you comparing bad to bad.

  • @DickLodge68 A couple more things, the corperate conspiracy theory is ridiculous. Its not "the suits playing money games." Its the suits being in the business of making money and the squeeky wheel doesen't get the grease in the music industry, it gets replaced. That solo album you keep talking about is actually a collaboration with eric feldman, who has a pretty impressive resume that started with captain beefheart.

  • @Vlaxitov It's not a "conspiracy", I never said that. Have you ever done anything in the music biz? They basically rape you for your talent monetarily You keep mentioning Feldman..fine but it was really Charles that performed it. Sure, Black doesn't have the greatest voice but he sang most Pixies songs and proved to me that he has a plethora of talent over Deal. Again, just my opinion.

  • @DickLodge68 No he didn't prove he has a "plethora of talent" over deal imho. He sang all the songs and the first song he let kim sing pretty much broke up the band cause he couldn't stand how well the reception to that was. He wasn't about to sit back and watch her take the spotlight. I keep mentioning feldman because what he does with indie rock titles is along the same lines as what someone like eric foster or max martin did and it was really britney spears who performed it.

  • I always looked at Kim and Frank's vocal layering as the essential component in the band. I always looked at Pixies as a two-singer band. I really, really love all of the Frank Black stuff that came after Pixies, but without Kim's voice the Pixies would not have been anywhere near the beautiful thing they were. Loved where the voices melted together until you couldn't separate one from the other.

  • bloodi trouble causing interviewers...!

  • I'm a Pixies fan but more a Kim fanboy. Pod is one of my favorite albums, I want "Cannonball" playing at my funeral, I even like The Amps, and I don't care one bit for Frank Black's solo stuff. But Pixies were better off for having one lead singer and songwriter. Kim's stuff would have just not really fit in. "Gigantic" is a classic Pixies track, but can you really imagine Pixies playing "Divine Hammer" or "Do You Love Me Now?" I don't think Kim could even play the "Cannonball" bass line right.

  • We all have the opportunity to sing... I get it. People think to much toward ego, when they miss the fucking point.

    Fah, fah, fah, fah...

    Fah, fah, fah, fah...

    Raise your voice.

    If you want to...

  • astonrd, If Frank alone was the Pixies, his solo career would have sounded a whole lot better.

  • @horizonrusted His solo stuff is good.

  • What a great answer. You tell'em Kim!

  • Frank was the Pixies. Deal with it LOL.

  • I get the fdeeling that if time and whatever was infinate then the Pixies would have experimented more and used Kim to sing and I think thats what they should have done. But I guess Frank assumed he was the Pixies and therefore the front man and therefore the singer.

IMHO the Pixies has to be all four.

  • friggin awesome I love Kim Deal

  • i love this woman and have named my bass after kim deal.

  • 0:04 That's what she said

  • no kim deal-no pixies.

  • Interviewer is a twat.

  • In every live performance Joe sings, but with his guitar.

  • @DeVileDanish This is a good comment.

  • I'd trade 'Down to the Well' 'UMass' 'Subbacultucha' or 'Head On' for 'Into the White' or 'Gigantic' ANY day of the week. KD was carrying her weight and then some. And what about DL's (amazing) LaLaLove You? When the focus shifted from songs to 'the Frank Black show' (talented as he may be) the band disintegrated. But who cares. They suck anyway. :-)

  • kim is awesome. but as dave said from nirvana why do i have to sing when you got kurt cobain. although frank was a dick like morrissey was to marr. power goes to their fn eads and they start tripping.

  • Kim was the talent of the band... frank black came close. But kim is a clear winner

  • @bedergriggs No it isn't a competition like that, it doesn't work like that....

A band have to come together, they all have to "get it"

  • this reporter sounds like shes shoveling shit into her mouth while trying to speak

  • Kim is much smarter than this interviewer. Why are journalists so empty headed? Or maybe they are very sly and just pretend to be dumb? Everything Kim said was true....it's like the media just makes shit up and tries to start fights. Charles didn't word it as the reporter said. Or maybe they are dumb and don't realize how dumb they are. It's like the nosy kid in school that stuck their nose in every one else's business. Not all famous people want media attention and that should be respected.

  • @Flipper79able well most of them do want media attention, otherwise they wouldn't be famous.

  • @Flipper79able "Not all famous people want media attention and that should be respected."

They probably shouldn't do interviews, then...?

  • @TheGuest4000 I have seen interviews where musicians ask politely to just talk about their music and not personal things and the interviewer asks anyway because they want a pat on the back from their boss. The thing I'm really talking about though is that there is a world of difference between doing an interview and having reporters stalk them at their home.....bothering their kids. That is the media attention I am really talking about. A lot of the media is so disrespectful and irresponsible.

  • @TheGuest4000 Some people really enjoy acting or playing music and want to do it as a career. So why do they have to put up with harassment just because they made a certain career choice? Not everyone asks for that. Most normal everyday people would be livid if they had their personal space and privacy violated.....so why does someone who plays music or act have to put up with that.....or why do they have to deal with manipulative and careless reporters? I think everyone should be treated equal.

  • wow. kim is a pretty nice girl. I love her

  • Joe should sing.

  • Impressed by Kim. Seems like the interviewer was really setting her up for a self-pity party. Kim showed good character answering the way she did and an unselfish team attitude with her comment about Joe.

  • She actually humors the interviewer and does it brilliantly. The average performer today would've gone on a tantrum when asked such deep questions.

  • I think a lot of this stems from the fact that Gigantic was an amazing song. Also the Breeders were really really good and a lot of people were upset when the Pixies broke up. I'm glad they're back.

  • love her.

  • kim is smarter than I thought

the interviewer was loading that question very much, and I never saw that take on it.

  • She's brilliant.

  • what a sexy voice

  • I think alot of what Kim was talking about occured because of anti-male sentiment in America. The message coming from American media, academia, justice system, and many women is that man = bad, woman = good. In this light, everything is perceived as a slight and the fault of a "priviledged" man and/or the patriarchy. I'm even more sure of this because Kim's strongest fan base is among lefties and feminists. Kim seems okay but I can see the influences she had.

  • @ActaNonVerba71 Yeah I think the interviewer could have phrased the questions better.

  • @ActaNonVerba71 I think that's a bit simplistic. My point of view is, I love the pixies, I love Frank's voice, I love Kim's voice. If all those things can fit together on the same album/in the same band, I am happy as a clam. The more songs Kim sings, the happier I am, but that doesn`t mean I want her to start singing every song.

Of course, like she implies, she should not be singing just for the hell of it or because she`s the only girl in the band, but because she has a smokin` voice.

  • bull shit small talk but good interview

  • Funny... i was just having a conversation with a friend about this precise thing. people think they own public figures and have the audacity to think they know better than the people they worship... Kim is Amazing. one of best female musician of all time. she has the Amps, the breeders, I also think she woulda been happy in Guided by Voices...

  • wheres the rest?!?!?!?!

  • What a classy response to an inappropriate question.

  • that was edited.

  • @comakid4000 What was edited? It's an unedited segment from a 15 minute interview.

  • @cdgrenouille is their an audio or video for the whole 15 minute interview ??o.o

  • Yea ,,prolly edited .. bottom line .. Pixies Breeders > Succesful franchise = GLOABAL MILLIONARES Fact is Kim and Charlesb write songs SO..CT_14 songs so..KD - 11 songs The Fans win !! CT+KD + = 28 of the Beat Rock n Roll songs !! :) God Loves
  • @comakid4000 The sound is gated, makes it sound like it could have been edited

  • yeah, but it's also true that there are whole sentences in there which haven't been edited and she couldn't have been possibly talking bout something else. she makes a good joke in the end and everything

  • @comakid4000 If you're referring to the drop outs during the silences, that may be due to compression, which is designed to cut out ambient noise when there is nothing registering on the VU.

  • Kim is the bomb! You know, you were there girl! Pixies, Breeders, Frank Black, it's all music, it's all a gift!

  • i don't get it why did she say they broke up?

  • @THeEraSerr ego. Kim & Frank both wanted to be primary song writers. Bet it chapped Franks hide when the breeders sold more records than the pixies.

  • @WesSideCali you are too young boy, go and listen your Limp Biskit album

  • @CBronsons so age gives authority? How very 1950s. BTW i was just reciting what i had just read in an oral history of the pixies. But hey, you sure told me. Was i playing on your lawn old man?

  • @THeEraSerr she didnt really explain why they brokeup she was kinda offended by the way the interviewer asked the question, so instead of answering the question she basically said, im a bass player we work as a team everyone is doing their job and you should stop being a dick trying to induce conflicts in our band

  • @imgordonfreeman They broke up because Kim wanted to be co-captain. Thompson owns the publishing as well as the Pixies name....he got more money than his band mates because it was Thompson's band. That's the reason there will be no new Pixies CD. Kim is demanding a bigger cut for herself, and Thompson wants to continue under the old business arrangements. Just as well, I'm sure any new material would be a disappointment.

  • @MrSloika That's fair comment and besides, I think the special thing about the reunion was that we get to ride the time capsule, back to a very special musical era. I'm quite happy with the material without spoiling it with any notion that fans demand new stuff.

  • Idiotic question, brilliant answer.

  • please tell me what is said in the interview, thank you very much!!!!

  • kim Deal is the shit!

  • @SOYUNPINCHEBOY Why did someone give this a thumbs down?

  • it was probably an accident

  • Kim Deal I love you !

  • She's sooo right!!!!

    Good answer!

  • @gvozd123

there's nothing wrong about it, Kim is just too much for any man...

  • Comment removed

  • Frank is just, well... ok how many Kim Deal songs has David Bowie performed or asked to record of hers?

  • @addalee .. ok why is Bowie to be considered important and what has he ever contributed to actual development of rock n roll? :) Seriously, though, Bowie may have been offended by Kim's comments circa 1990 (?) when she dismissed his public 'advice' that Pixies will/must become the Talking Heads of the 90s, or something along those lines.

Bowie did cover I've Been Waiting for You, which is a Kim song in a way, he he. :)Peace.

  • @ImantaBabite "I've Been Waiting For You" is a Neil Young song. Pixies just covered it ( I know you hinted that it wasn't a real Pixies song but givecredit to the author). Bowie also covered "Cactus", an actual Black Francis song. Bowie's influence on rock and roll? Let's start with being a pioneer/godfather of glam rock, add in a pioneer in the fusion of rock with ambient during the late 70's. Oh yeah, and saving Iggy's career? I'd say that's important and infulential.

  • I love her. And she has an excellent talking voice. It's so unique. And her singing fit very well with the music Pixies created.

  • No one should point fingers about Pixies breaking up. There was just too much talent for one little band. Period. They had to break up. They were just too good.

But that is also why they had to get back together, they were just too good!!

  • Your comment makes me sad, mostly because I am afraid you are right. I haven't seen their post reunion shows, but they don't seem to have the magic they used too at all. They are pretty much all I listen too, no doubt my favorite band, so of coarse I want to see them in concert, but I'm afraid it might ruin it for me. Maybe they should quit while they are ahead you know? *cough cough Bob Dylan*

  • wow the interviewer has a lot of nerve. I'd be scared whether if Kim was gonna flip out on me

  • @FirePaperMario :of course, she's british!

  • @blueroomexit - NO U! I love both of them, but kim deal > kim gordon. FACT.

  • Again, I call bullshit on Kim. I read an interview given by Kim back in 93or94. When asked if she'd get back with the Pixies, she said something to the effect of , "Charles doesn't like me, but I love the other guys and I'd wanna be anywhere they are." As for money, Kim wasn't broke-broke in 2004, but she wasn't rolling in money either. BTW the 2004 tour grossed $16 million. I don't know about your reality, but to me, $16 million ain't chump change.

  • Meh, it's a stupid question from the interviewer, and Kim obviously doesn't want to answer it (in fact, having listened to the whole podcast, it's a pretty weak interview overall).

Kim's there to talk up Breeders' new album, not to discuss something that happened a decade and a half earlier. ~15 years is a long time. People's thoughts and attitude's change and they grow up.

Can you really remember the reasoning behind things you did 15 years ago? And would it be relevant now? I'd guess not.

  • She's full of shit. Read "Fool the World: The Oral History of a Band Called Pixies", and see what people who were there have to say about it. Kim made demands, and wanted to include her own material. She wanted to turn the band into a partnership. Thompson felt threatened, and tried to fire her on two separate occasions. The only reason any of them are back now for the has-been tours is for the big, fat paychecks.

  • so fucking what, ofcourse she wanned to include her own material as it was fucking amazing, why would you be in a band and not include your awesome songs in em?

  • @rayolacer Because it was Frank's band. Frank started the band and recruited Kim, not the other way around. It wasn't a partnership, it wasn't a democracy. She didn't seem to understand that. She wanted writing credits, she wanted to be co-captain. This is why I accuse her of lying in this interview. "All I wanted to do was play bass." Bullshit. She's a fucking liar. BTW, except for Pod, her solo work sounds like shit.
