does anyone else have trouble switching from the front squat grip (couple of fingers off the bar) back to the normal grip for the press?? In the video he does it as the weight bounces up at the top of the front squat but without the bounce I struggle to make the switch...
@weirs8 No, he's mixing his weights systems (lbs/kgs). Hes' got 80kg + 10lb = 84.54545kg = 186. Plus collars though, so yeah he is selling himself short by the weight of the collars lol :)
Dude you are a beast! Got any suggestions for books or videos for how to learn to do those complexes? I've only ever down the slow lifts but want to learn to do some olympic lifts.
Guys, thanks for the video, its by far the most clear and comprehensive instruction ont he bear. I think I have it nearly right but now and again I am pulling a muscle where my neck joins my back. I dont always feel it straight away either. The only injury I can compare it to is whiplash! any idea what I may be doing wrong? I figure it has to be related to the powerclean?
Reminds me of the "brown bear" I did in college on the crew team - but it was more endurance and less power. It was curls, squats, overhead press, clean and jerk, upright rows, 45 seconds on, 15 seconds off on each exercise with a 45lb bar for 40 minutes, never putting down the bar. I was told the workout was originally developed by a coach at the Naval Academy's crew team.

LOL!!! okay, so I dont wana sound like a complete ass but this seems ridiculous. Im a soldier n the philosophy of the guy who talks about operations seems like a joke. THIS WORKOUT....wtf??? how in the world does this actually benefit a person on a regular cycle. oooooo, im gona go out n waste my body on a one time event, call myself a badass, n never be able to apply what im doing. you guys really need to work on ur philosophy.
I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean by "regular cycle". Could you explain please? Also, this workout seems to use functional everyday movements, so I would say it's applicable to daily life.
and you are?? apparently you're a desk jockey in the military. people do movements like these all the time in the field. go out and see the world you pencil pusher.
You're a soldier and that automatically makes you a fitness expert? He's doing all compound movements and and some explosive ones too. By doing them in a complex he's also getting an insane metabolic workout. He could just do this and he would be a better sprinter than you, even if he never sprints. All the moves translate to real life. Not only that, but he has a crap load of strength too, most people couldn't do that much weight on a lot of those moves if they just did straight sests.
Lots of respect for The "Bear Complex".. I have a PR of 135 right now, but hoping to hit 155 pretty soon and keep working my way up.. Awesome form.. and dude, I know how brutal that workout is.. Good stuff
there is too much break in your motion when you push press. the motion should squat into a push press. one motion
Jayskyglider23 1 week ago
@Jayskyglider23 Its not a thruster, they are two separate movements.
jhubbard66 5 days ago
@Jayskyglider23 no, that is the incorrect way of doing the complex. The press should be separate from the squat, it elimanates momentum.

the seven reps is one round. typically you do five rounds, increasing the weight each round. At least thats how I understand it.

why do u stand there with the bar on ur lap?
naraku127 2 years ago
@naraku127 im guessing youve never done this. not allowed to touch the bar to the ground longer than abiut 2 seconds for the power clean touch
BreakingBenjaminJoko 2 years ago
i have done it, waiting with the bar there would get me tired though, maybe im holding it in a wrong position
naraku127 2 years ago
@naraku127 yeah, i guess it could. you could just hold it in the rack position. It depends where you wanna take a break, during a rep or between.
