  • I´ve been watching this show last sunday and I have to say that Nikki David Jones, the girl who was Elphaba on stage was AWESOME! I love her from now to eternally, I´ll come back to watch this show another time at less for sure and I live in Spain...

  • Now this musical is in Holland/Europe and the Dutch Elphaba is played by Willemijn Verkaik. She plays this part also in German version in Germany. You must see her by looking her up on YouTube. My opinion; she is better than Idina... but that's just my opnion.

  • @darlingalain

Not an opinion, a fact of life!!

  • @WickedFan157 my bad, but rachel hunter's better than both ;)

  • annotations killed it.

go defy gravity off a bridge.

  • @SSBBify Every time i look at your comment, i can't help but laugh

  • i saw idina two time in London....and then last year i saw Rachel.....i'm really sorry...but when all of you are just talking of how they sing ( a part that i 've heard idina twice and she was perfect)....but do you ever care also about how they act?...

idina is really elegant on the stage in the first act...then her face expression change completely in the bad moment of the second act...

really sorry to say that rachel walk on the stage like an elephant and has only one facial expression.....

  • it think Rachel Hunter's better

  • @jaszon28 where on her website?

  • @jaszon28 i dont think she was a smoker...how do you know?

  • I HEAR A FREAKY CAT !!!!

  • @JacquesJon I hear an asshole who doesnt know what it's like to sing a super hard song while having an asthma attack while performing in front of hundreds of people.

    You hear it, too?

  • Rachel (Elphaba from the London show) really needs to make a Cd too!

  • i accept that idina maybe wasn't feeling that good for this performance but if you look at her first defying gravity in london that's even worse than this one. i think coming to london was a big mistake for idina because she really sounds like she's pushing her voice :/

  • @ben3585 What the hell does coming to London have to do with anything?? Is London so fucking spectacular that an amazingly talented and successful woman was brought down a few notches just from the sheer intimidation factor of being on a London stage? Fuck off. So typical! OMG I'm infuriated. Leaving this page now so I can breathe.

  • @stephiebug wow calm down, its just my opinion. i'm not saying she wasn't amazing on the cast album or on broadway but i think by the time she came to london her voice was not as good as it used to be. u gotta learn to accept that some people have other opinions :/

  • @stephiebug You need to seriously calm the fuck down bro and let others have their opinion.

Go punch a teddy bear or find some stress relief methods cause you clearly have some form of an anger issue.

  • she has never said she has asthma, and @Kylezilla to each his own.....

  • Using her asthma as an excuse is not an exception. I have asthma and am a performer and can manage to keep the talent level up. I'm sure with the amount of time she's been performing and vocal classes she's taken she's mastered her breathing patterns. This is her just not taking care of her vocals and butchering her throat by belting these notes unhealthily. Not to mention, she does smoke. Do I think she has talent? Yes. Do I think she's taking care of her voice? No. So, yeah.

  • @Kylezilla she must have a much worse case of asthma than you, in fact you probably have a very mild case...

  • @jasonr1929 Well, it doesn't help that she smokes and I chose to actually be active and fight it. So, perhaps she just isn't taking the right approach. I just think it's silly to blame it on something like that. Own it. Do I think she has an amazing voice? Sure. But just because she has the ability to be a good performer it doesnt mean she's always a great performer. She should take some more care for herself or else she'll completely lose the gift she has.

  • @Kylezilla She doesn't smoke anymore.

  • @Kylezilla She doesn't smoke anymore.

  • @Kylezilla what the hell is wrong with you? i dont care if you have asthma, what does tht hv 2 do with anything? YOU sing "Defying Gravity" which even I can't sing, and i've been taking vocal lessons since i was 2. she's performing in front of hundreds of peeps. and even when she has attacks, SHE KEEPS GOING. and you idiot, she quit wicked already! so stop being stupid!

  • everyone please know even when she was on broadway it wasn't in her range so thats why she dosen't sound as good as she did on the cd! she is amazing either way!

  • her voice is beautiful either way so why is everyone hating on her i wanna see you have the balls to get up there and perform

  • Just to clear it up, y'all.. Idina DID screw up her voice. She got nodules from performing this show... and now that her nodules have healed she is performing again. That was NOT asthma. It was nodules. You guys obviously aren't singers.

  • @rosiewebber94 This'll sound dumb, but what exactly are nodules? D:

  • @BlazedHearts They're callouses on the vocal folds that a singer can get from excessive abuse of the voice. They cause chronic hoarseness and pain while singing. Luckily, if the singer rests their voice for a set amount of time, the nodules will eventually heal and the singer will be back to normal.

  • i saw this live!

  • shes good here, but was amazing in the one in new york. :)

  • I saw this in New York city in 2009. It was amazing how scary and intimidating Elfeba truly was as she rose up into the air. Chills went up the back of my neck becuase it really was like being faced by a real witch.

  • Her voice is obviously really strained in this performance. She has not lost her ability to hit these notes though being that she hits them every night on tour.

  • Poor Idina...at the end around 0:55 she looks like she's about to cry...she knows that her voice isn't what it used to be, and if that were me up there, and I heard myself singing like that, and I knew that it used to always be beautiful, before it became a hit and miss sort of thing, I'd be upset with myself too. I know Idina loved being Elphaba, and I'm sorry that she just can't 'defy gravity' like she used to.

We'll never forget you, Elphie. <3

  • shes on glee :)

  • People always say she's very sick when her performance sucks. I think this is one of her worst Defying Gravities ever.

  • at 0:54 she seemed nervous:( everyone stop hating on this version!she is an amazing singer and she sounds like this because she had been singing this song everyday for a few years and + she might be sick.

  • Idena Menzel is an amazing singer (listen to the cd and other performances); by this time she had been singing wicked shows [literally] every day for a number of years, added she was very ill when she performed this...

and even on her worst day (here) she's a TON better than those haters on their BEST day.

  • it just never sounds as good as the soundtrack, or if your actualy there, if you dont have the echos throughout the room it will never be the same.

  • she might have asthma, but she could take on just about ANY performer out there now and kick their tail! and for the record, her style isnt "singing loud", its called belting. its also very hard to do, only about 10% of singers can do it properly.

  • i love how all the idina fans always blame a not so good performance on her asthma :L

  • @MikeSaurus Agreed.

Idina's voice has probably been overused and its caused her to become "not-so-good".

Of course now her voice is almost near-ruined, and I dont know if even waiting can repair it.

  • @MikeSaurus her performance is probably 1000000000000000000000000 times better than yours. so you have no right to say that she sucks, you idiot

  • @pinkbear542 so because she's a better singer than me, I shouldn't be able to voice my opinion......? No. Goodbye.

  • @MikeSaurus Did I ever say that? No I did not. I pointed out what I thought was right, and I also pointed out that people who have mean things to say should not say anything at all.

  • @pinkbear542 you actually did say that...... wow hun, you're so confused that you don't even remember your initial argument (how tragic)... anyway, since you dont have the capacity to understand anything, i'll have to go. bye dumb whore

  • I'm a vocal coach (not teacher) & I can tell you that while the human voice is the most lovely, it is also the most delicate of all instruments. After so much wear & tear & with or without asthma, the human voice will break down and can only be restored with vocal & physical rest. For instance, if a violin or guitar string breaks, you only have to switch it out & voila!

  • Do either of you sing? Just curious.

  • i dont think she has asthma. i just think that the song makes you sing really high, and she has to obviously do it loud. im probably wrong but i just think her throat got a little wacky in that part because she has to sing it high and SUPER LOUD! everyone i know say: ya so what she just has to sing loud anyone can do that! but i dont seee anybody else who can sing that awsome and LOUD!

  • Sorry, even though she got a Tonny for this, she is out of song...

I heard Alexia Khadime in London - she's perfect in this role.

  • she is just wonderful!

  • God, I love Idina, but this certanily wasn't her best performance. Still, she is the queen of Wicked.

  • excellent job!!!!

  • She has asthma and she cracked a rib during her final week in the Broadway run of Wicked. Made a dramatic return to the stage on what would have been her final night and walked on stage in regular cloths and sang her final song. She is an amazing performer who still sounds incredible with her limitations.

  • I like this performance of Defying Gravity. I also hear the high F.It's too bad she has asthma sometimes.

  • She looks pretty disappointed at the end, clearly not happy with it herself.

  • ozzians are so dumb minded why don't they just get glinda when they got the chance?

  • If she has asma like you're talking about I think that is totally understandable to say that she's limited, but a bad singer she's absolutely not...

  • her hat sucks

  • @strudllekitte339 ESCUSE MEH?

  • @strudllekitte339 U SUCK

  • @Incie100 now my opinion has changed i kinda likeit

  • well, you guys obviously don't know this , but she has VERY bad asthma, especially now that she is older. i've seen many of her performances where she is gasping because she is having an asthma attack on stage! she is amazing, ESPECIALLY since she keeps going on while having attacks. yeah, when she has them she doesnt sound her best, but she is still pretty good. and yes, she is getting older (i mean she's 40!) so her lungs don't have much strength , but she is not a bad singer in the least

  • @xHEYxITZxUSx well said =D

  • @xHEYxITZxUSx Goshers wow she is very strong I mean I have a little case of asthma and when I have an attack I can barely breathe and it's very hard to gasp for air, let alone sing songs... especially ones as amazing like this!! Wow, sh'es truly amazing.

  • @xHEYxITZxUSx you suck. i really dont think she would be having asthma and having attacks whens shes doing BROADWAY! i dont think she would ever be on broadway if she knew that she had asthma and that singing that loud could make it worse, and that she could have an attack during a show!!!!!!!!

  • @lola999ist so, i suck for her medical condition? ok, that makes total sense, and she has said it herself and you can look it up and i am not the only one who says this so why don't you go up to her and tell her she sucks for her living her dream. singing loud, as far as i know, cause asthma attacks. she doesn't have attacks often, it has to do with breathing, not how loud you talk. get your facts straight before being a bitch and talking shit that you have no idea about.

  • @xHEYxITZxUSx Although I am a great admirer of Menzel and I do realize she can sound struggling at times due to her asthma attacks and I sympathize with that, I must clarify that the age of 40 is actually around the peak of a singer, where she is in top vocal condition - not too young that she is still inexperienced, and not too old that the diaphragm is just gone - it is usually at around 60 that vocal decline begins in singers with proper vocal technique.

  • @xHEYxITZxUSx I knew that and the way she ties her gasping in to Elphaba's panic she is genus!!

  • @xHEYxITZxUSx you know, no one has ever confirmed that Idina has asthma... it's just something people started to say to defend her in the comments to the Tony Awards performance video :)

P.s. I'm not a hater, Idina is on my top 3 of favorite LIVING singers :D I can't decide if she's over or under Barbra Streisand...

  • @xHEYxITZxUSx Having astma is a real problem while singing... But really, that's no excuse for every single bad audio of Idina.... Especially since practicaly every bootleg I have of Idina is awful in this song. Idina is awesome! But she ruins the end of this song at almost every single performance, sadly. And it's not always because of her astma... she would have been fired after a few months is that was the cause... (true, she did suffer from attacks during SOME performances.)

  • @xHEYxITZxUSx actually her asthma isnt as bad as it used to be the first couple of years in the show she had quite bad asthma but now shes been taught how to try and control it more and dosnt have to take as much gasps :) and asthma r no asthma still awesome and dsnt sound any difrent to evry1 else :)

  • @xHEYxITZxUSx she said in an interview herself that she doesnt have asthma

  • Idina doesn't have the power to do this role anymore. There are so many Elphabaa that are way better than she is. Its sad to say but its true

  • @jeeeem agreed.

  • @jeeeem YOU KNOW WHAT? IDINA WAS THERE BEFORE ANY OTHER ELPHIE AND SHE WILL BE THE BEST FOR LIFE TIMES TO COME AN IF U THINK JULIA MURNIA IS GOOD THEN THERE IS SOMETHING LODGED YOU YOURE SMALL MINDED BRAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Phew sorry.

  • Who fucking cares?

  • At least Idina didn't have to leave 2 months because she killed her voice.

  • maybe she should have.

  • agree.:)

  • i'd rather prefer the actual riff she has in the end over the one from the tony's

the original sounded more wicked and less chest cold

  • i didnt hear any diffrence at all

  • keep the pitch UP!

  • As an Idina fan, I would have to disagree on this being one of her best performances, and also on the fact that I really don't think her Tony performance was that good either. Her London run was quite AMAZING though. And having seen her live twice in 2004, I thought she was incredible. But she did have her inconsistencies. All Broadway actors/actresses do.

P.S. Being in different environments can take a toll on your health and vocal abilities. ( This was proven when Kerry came to Broadway.)

  • I also say that because I was deployed to Iraq for ten months and when I first got there I was sick for almost a week. And then got sick quite frequently. Once I got to America, I was sick for a while as well. Trust me, going to different countries and staying there for a while can really effect you.

  • i think it took a toll on kerry when she went to broadway because they flew her out there and the next day she was doing the show so she literally had no time to adjust

  • i love this song.

  • ahh that was quite bad :(

  • omg....horror...

  • Indina Is amaising

  • hahahaha TONY AWARDS AHHHHH hahaha hilarious! good thang she won in 2004 woop woop

  • she IS amazing. she has to work on getting it right every time or else things like these awards are going to fly out the window. on the whole very good. lol im speaking poshlyishily! :?)

  • That is a complete lie...she hasn't ruined her voice at all, that's a rediuculous rumour that can be proven untrue! (Just look at her 2008/09 concerts...where she sings this song EASILY!)

She doesn't push at all, she uses a technique based on SLS and the sole purpose of that is you don't have to push.

I've had one lesson in SLS and already I understand the true genius of this woman...

  • Well I know many professionals who would disagree...

and the Tony comittee so whatever.

But ofcourse it's you who makes the deciding verdict!

  • No, she hasn't. She obviously has these notes, as she can sing them. Her acting in this role is absolutely perfect, and she obviously didn't ruin her voice, as she has made several CDs since Wicked. She has a personal vocal coach, and I don't think that her coach would let her f*** up her voice.

  • ok thats y she cracke the first time she sang this song, these notes r too high in her register she pushes all the time., look how she strains to reach the notes, she was terribile in this role

  • With due respect to her acting career, I think she was perfect for this role -- her looks are the perfect match -- she really looked a witch, plus her acting was SUPERB!!! but I do not think she had the voice to make me say "Amazing"....as the play says "unlimited" her voice to me is very "limited" as far as high notes -- to the point that it hurts my ears when she hits high..sorry but its an opinion...

  • hah I COMPLETELY agree! Thank you!

  • @Soon2beonbroadway No she was actually very ill when she performed this.

  • poor Idina had a bad throught on Tony and RVP she did an AMAZING job though =D x

  • is that sweat on her forhead or a mic. i see it in all her defying grafty performances

  • it's a mic. i think i read somewhere that she has 3 mics - one in her hat, one on her forehead, and one somewhere else lol.

  • the other one is on the side of her face.

  • thats true, im not sure about her hat, but there is one on her forehead, one in her ear -in her to she knows what she sounds like- that streches around to her mouth (built to be invisible to cameras, and from the seats) and i think one on her dress(es)

  • I've sat in the front row and all I've noticed is a head one, so I don't think she wears one on her face at all. Maybe her dress, but not her mouth

  • ive seen it ;)

i was in the second row, and i brought binoculars to see the details. she has one in her hat, on her cheek/mouth (from her ear) and in her dress. i saw it ;)

  • Yeah, I like her old hat better. But in none of the productions of WICKED, the hat doesn't have a peice of cloth attatched like a ribbon to it like in the movie, THE WIZARD OF OZ!

  • @mightypower7 there's one in her broom.

  • mic

  • haha, it's a mic that's like threaded through the wig or something.

  • thats the sad thing about ms menzel, you have to edit her voice to make it sound good, sure she has an incredibly good voice, for instance the chess concert blew kerry out of the water as far as singing goes in that, but during her london wicked stint, she was simply awful, pitchy, screechy even, sorry menzel fans, but its just an opinon

  • Idina Menzel is amazing. but ur right. sometimes she just doesnt hit some of those notes right. and her breathing thing is definitly not good. if u listen to almost any of her live performances, the way she breathes between lines, its a high shrill sound, and its VERY distracting. im annoyed that people are like.... poor thing.. had asthma. No. she didnt have asthma. she needs singing lessons to control her breathing when shes singing. and shell be able to fix that. like he said. just an opinion

  • thank you

  • shes an amazing singer and her breathing is fine, its just htis role. like i said she dusnt have these notes in her range, she pushes all the time to get them

  • shes an AMAZING actress. but not singer. If she were amazing she could do diverse roles and sing the highest and the lowest notes. Clearly she cant. She is a 'good' singer.

  • @emerald11108 But she won a tony award, it was for her whole performance, so she must of been amazing

  • completely agreed

  • @emerald11108 WILL YOU SHUT UP ID LIKE TO SEE YOU SING WITH ASTHAMA YOU WOULD SUCK!

  • she really is amazing! we saw the musical just three days ago and kristen and idina were wonderful!!! i seriously recommend it to everyone!!! even if you're not a musical person it was an awesome experience!

  • i dont think that kristern and idina were in it 3 days ago? more like 4-5 YEARS ago

  • lol then they have really good understudies/look-alikes :)

  • i think you saw Ali Mauzey and Dee Roscioli or Nicole Parker?

  • probably... haha idk for sure tho... whoever they were could definitly sing:)

  • Kristin and Idina were wonderful?? They havent done wicked for years now!

  • I'm very impressed with her. Maybe because I never saw her live, but my first show was in London a few weeks back and I fell in love. The lead was absolutely perfect. Not one mistake.. well not any major ones at least..

  • I also thought her Ahh from the tonys was one of the best ever.

  • Wow! Very legit! Great editing! You're very talented in this area. Great job!

  • it iz spelled elphaba... NOT WITH AN "F"

  • its is with a s.... NOT WITH A "Z"

  • LOL.

  • i love her performance but the last note that she hits is a little shaky

  • yeah, but try singing that high in a musical lol

  • what does that have to do with my comment??

  • It was only a C#, so it wasn't that high. I think she was straining her voice and not supporting it enough from her diaphragm, so it came out a bit shaky & a little off key.

  • hey markymarc45 i totally agree Idina is amazing and she did start the Wicked show in london, haha and all those kerry ellis fans who says shes the best then why didnt they have kerry start it? huh? haha GO IDIAN!

  • seamless!

  • Good Job!

  • what do you mean??? this video is unavailable!!! how can you see it? is it good?

  • isn't that "green witch" the girl from rent?

  • Yes, Idina played Maureen.

  • ooh yes (:

  • wow.

  • she is the best of all the performers i hav seen so far 4 this song but if u c her up close u can tell that she iz too priddy 4 the part

  • if you read the book youl see she isnt suposed to be ugly, just has a distinct jaw and green skin...

  • in the original wizard of oz she isnt even green

  • im talking about WICKED the book lol

  • i love idina but this wasn;t her best

  • i think it's her best performence. She is does it with so much passion! and i think when her voice goes out it doesn't have a bad effect on the song. people dont like this because of her being ill and her vocals but i love it!

  • actually she wasnt ill that night, my friend saw her in the show that same night before the whole cast hot footed it across london for the royal variety. its just its tough on her to do it twice. understandable though! that show is a major sing!

  • idina has made elphie more and more real all this time!

  • Its because she smokes! Gah!

  • i don't know about then, but i heard she quit. she can't have that great of a voice while smoking.

  • Really! That's so goooood!

  • She is amazing!

  • this wasnt her best perfomance of defying gravity

  • wait at wat pt did she have the attack?

  • wasnt that at the the tonys?

  • i have full shows with the obc if anyone would like to trsde let me know

  • people you need to chill whether she had an asthma or a heart attack she sang this song eight times a week for nearly five years and so she went out of tune of key or whatever a couple of times so what big deal she was still amazing i couldn't do it and also people need to stop comparing her to the other 9 elphabas she was the original and the best and did it for the longest lets hear it for idena ps if she reads this please do a concert in ireland mwah xxx

  • ... 2 years.

  • Are you mentally retarded? Idina did work shops with Wicked 2-3 years before the show opened... SF previews... a year and a half on Broadway(8 Shows a week), London work shops, and 3-4 months in London. That's HARDLY 2 years.

  • u think she would waste her time on youtube and actually read ur comment?!?! LOL.

  • it suprising, if celebs and actresses get the time, quite alot of them like to go on youtube and se what people think of them.

but still, it's very unlikely she will take any notice to that comment.

  • actually most celebs avoid youtube because the DON'T want to know what people are saying about them. especially broadway stars. most stay as far away as possible because if they read all the bad comments it would make them too self conscious to perform and it would greatly diminish their self esteem. fact

  • she does have youtube and does watch videos and comment, smart-alec!
