Ah, Final Fantasy 7. The boon and plague of the final fantasy genre.
He who put Final Fantasy on the map of mainstream, but also opened it up to being whored out to the desires of the casual gamers for the purpose of marketting and making big bucks by greedy corporates stinking up the creativity that produced the prior Final Fantasies.
By no means a bad game, it's a great game, but undeserving of it's fan base.
Nevertheless, the music is catchy and impeccable, as is many FFs songs.
I don't think FF 7 is overrated or overhyped at all honestly. What people seem to forget is that the recognition the game gets is not because of the game itself, but what the game achieved. It was the first FF not on a nintendo console and the first in 3d so it was a massive change of direction for Square. It was the first FF to make it to PAL territories, and it essentially popularised FF and arguably RPG's in general in the western world! I think it deserves the hype with those accolades.
Mario RPG is what actually got me hooked on RPGs, but thats besides the point, you pretty much nailed it, but I think the reason so many people dislike FF7 or why people think it's over-rated is probably due to the spin-offs. For a while even I started to hate FF7 because of the shit storm of spin-offs. But one day I looked back at the game by itself and except it for what it is and try to blur out the spin-off shit that almost ruined it for me. Though I will admit the graphics are a bit dated
I'll admit the spin offs need to stop where they are. But in my experience (and this is a sweeping generalisation) most people whom have jumped on the overrated bandwagon are the people who didn't play it when it first came out, and came to it later after hearing all the hype, expecting a jewel encrusted masterpiece from the treasure vaults of Xerxes! Which of course it isn't. It's just a good game. One that's 13 years old! Honestly I would start to worry if nothing better had come out since!
Just becase it was first to do all those things doesn't mean it's the best. It's absolutely overhyped and overrated for the exact reasons you just stated. It was the first Final Fantasy that people in PAL regions played, so it is definitely going to have a place in their hearts, but that does not at all mean that it's as good as they believe it to be.
And yes, the majority of the people who don't like FF7 are the people who didn't buy it straight up, and waited. But what that did for them is let them see the game for what it actually was.
But I still respect people's decisions when they say FF7 is great, I just wish they'd realise why they think it's great instead of just going fanboy on it and saying "ALL FF'S SUCK EXCEPT 7 BECAUSE I NEVER PLAYED ANY OTHER FF'S BEFORE IT"
I have honestly never seen anyone say anything like that apart from people complaining about so called "fanboys" that I have honestly yet to encounter. I have played every FF in the main series and quite a few of the spin offs and 7 is my favourite, I don't think its the best but it is my favourite. It just irks me that although best is a subjective term, you can't say anything positive about 7 nowadays without being told your wrong or being labled a fanboy!
But this page is a prime example of what I mean. SNAPPLECAP94 left a message saying he/she thinks this should be number 1. A fairly innocuous coment about how they apparently like this song more then tomenaki, and for that they got 5 thumbs down (and counting) and a message pointing out that they were wrong. If I were in their shoes I would be like "I'm sorry I didn't realise you all knew what I like in a song better then me... I have seen the light!"
In my opinion, i think saying that this song (while it IS good and has many memories attached to it, even for me.) should be number 1 is taking it a little far. XD

Yes there probably are people who do rate something above it's station purely because it's attached to FFVII. There are probably people who do the same for every other FF too. But I also know someone shouldn't be made to feel like an idiot for having an opinion that isn't the mainstream nowadays. I mean you think 7 is overrated for the same reasons I think it's not but we've managed to have an adult conversation about it. Although we do seem to have strayed away from FF7 a tad :)
It's okay. I don't mind these conversations. I wouldn't say 7 is overrated, to me, and I appreciate it for what it did. It also has a place in my heart for introducing me to RPG's, which are my favorite genre of game. I think people take it too far, because there are many games out there that have improved on it, but i still love the game, hence why there are the songs on this list from it. :)
This is one of my favorite themes every. I think there are much better battle themes, but this was my first RPG so it holds such a special spot in my heart. Even when I replay it still feels amazingly awesome to play. The game really is extremely overrated, and I would have to admit that, but it will always be special to me.

That aside, I'm glad you put this in place for it's musical quality rather than fanboy/fangirlism.

This is probably my favorite song in VII, alongside some other of the more emotional character themes. I still liked IX's battle theme more though.

And the materia system is also flawed making the classes of the characters useless. which is what made FF9 and FF10 so great after it.

This is one of my favorite themes every. I think there are much better battle themes, but this was my first RPG so it holds such a special spot in my heart. Even when I replay it still feels amazingly awesome to play. The game really is extremely overrated, and I would have to admit that, but it will always be special to me.
