If I was your teacher I would give you an A for this. I've sort of noticed a pattern with how abridged series are made but I never thought what you've come up with.
This was indeed highbrow old chap! I must say this internet video project of yours tickled my brain in one form or another... school has defunit lee mead u smartur. :3
In all seriousness though, cool vidja bro! I liked it!
You deserve an A+ for this connection. I have been following abridge for several years and am now finally getting involved. I plan on waiting for a new series to get released to to begin my mark, hope you see it in the future. That LittleKuriboh really pulled my strings, curse those several years ahead of me.
I hope you get an A+ on your project! Just two points: Firstly, you did not list your university or school and class in the credits--are you aware that there are additional intellectual property issues with publishing school related work? Secondly, Why do you feel it is important for newcomers to experience barriers to entry to the abridging community in the future? Do you consider that a good trend? You don't see abridging expanding into newer and more mainstream genres?
@herbidesea 1) If I cared so much about Intellectual Property law do you think I'd be making AMVs and Abridged Series? Just so you know, I don't think my teacher cares that much about it. She pretty much outright said to those of us who were doing videos to post them on YouTube . . .
@herbidesea 2) I do think barriers to entry are good. And yes, we already have them, by virtue of the fact that crappy series get ignored (for the most part). The problem is how the good ones float to the top. That's why I said they'd probably need a leg up in some way. I'm not sure what you mean by newer and more mainstream genres: are you talking about live-action television?
The most flawed thing about "Oversaturation" is unlike other genres where you see "Another Law and Order" or another "CSI," the only qualifier is doing an episode and not even doing half the effort as the next one. Yeah, there's 10+ of a certain series but that's not as special as one would think.
Wow. I had no idea how smart sounding and big worded the abridging community is!
P.S. I have seen way more Code Geass Abridged series than Death Note, however, there are many out there. New ones arising for multiple abridged series are Naruto Shipuuden and TTGL. One thing you'll notice though is that all of the best abridged series have no competing abridged series based on their anime or what have you (See Example TFS Dragonball Z Abridged and Yugioh the Abridged Series).
Nice job! A very insightful and interesting look into abridged series. I love reading scholarly-esque articles/speeches/presentations that explore the connections between online media (OK, let's call a spade a spade and just call them memes) and "traditional" views of pop culture and media. Hope you get a great grade, because you deserve it.
...also, I imagined Sousuke Sagara presenting this entire thing, which is a hilarious way to listen to serious things!
A very coherent and well-put together presentation of the meme ("genre") of "abridged series."
My two cents on the "future" of the genre: it's more likely to fizzle out and die within the next two years. Saturation, as you mentioned, will play a large part (espec. considering that the 2nd parody of one series is usually considered a "ripoff"), as will the continual self-referencing; new abridged episodes continually alienate newcomers by making knowledge of previous abridged series a necessity.
Also the overall bombardment of new episodes. I've been following this "genre" since early 2007, and I seriously thought it would never get old, but, now that my subscriptions are yielding ten new abridged episodes PER DAY that I will need to keep viewing in order to understand the references of next week's episodes, I am considering leaving the genre. I can't be alone on this.
@StrikerSL9 If I recall correctly, hbi2k has said something alone those lines, or rather that he only follows a very select few now.
Of course, the same sort of burnout happens in all fandoms: a good parallel to Abridged Series might be the AMV community. There is a constant influx of new editors and exit of old editors. Very few of the old guard remain.
Very true that the entire community would never form a collective intelligence but going along with that various patches of the community certainly have and not just in doing collaborations. Far more so than that it's the fact that certain abridgers specialize in different kinds of parody or have more resources than others and they often enough are willing to share those resources along with their "know-how" which is how the intelligence becomes more collective.
Well, I gotta say, bold move using abridged series as an example of this sort of thing. I never had the guts to do that.
Only thing I say is that yeah...collective intelligence is a stretch. Other than that, very spot on. You should check out Jenkins' work on "Textual Poaching" as well. I'd say a good chunk of abridged series to a T.
@xexyzl That, and that the so called abridged community is inherently fragmented and will never be able to fully form a single collective intelligence to the extent that fandoms of single shows will be able to.
For example, say Abridger A makes K-On Abridged because thats the kind of show they enjoy. Its highly unlikely that they will be able to form a collective intelligence with Abridger B -- who makes Gundam 0083 Abridged because their tastes are so drastically different. (Continued)
Because there are such a wide variety of fandoms being represented by abridged series, there will inevitably be a clash of tastes and personalities that will prevent a true collective intelligence from forming.
Further, Youtube does not provide the tight-knit networking of most online forums, local clubs, or fandom specific conventions. In my own experience, I had not even talked to other abridgers terribly often until around the release of my sixth episode, over a year into the process.
Its easy for groups or individuals to become isolated from the rest of the would be community, and because Youtube is so vast and impersonal, theres a more tenuous connection between these groups and individuals than youd find among those on, say, a large Naruto fansite.
So yeah, in terms of abridging as a form of media convergence and participatory culture, I think youre absolutely right, but abridgers have and will continue to have a difficult time forming a collective intelligence.
P.S. Love the project, A++, if you don't get that grade, then your teacher is a moron for it's a great presentation, one thing i would like to add, maybe you could discuss how abridged series can sometimes make users watch the real anime, out of curiosity, intrigue or even because it looks interesting. i got hooked onto a few animes after watching the abridged versions first and wandering about the plot, Darker than BLACK is a good example, wish you the best and for that A++ ;)
quite an interesting take on dissecting abridging and breaking it down to it's essence. Please teach me more Professor Xexyzl XD lolz j/k nice job I hope you get/got a good mark for this.
I found this presentation very interesting, insightful, and enjoyable. I think you did a great job! Also, looks like my name made a slight cameo @ 7:34. XD
