In the Marine Corps our dogs are one rank above the handler, so if the handler ever gets caught abusing the dog he is slammed with up to 5 or 6 articles of UCMJ and some time in the Brig. Assault of a commissioned officer, Noncommisioned officer, and insubordinate conduct towards a superior. A Court Martial can follow you around for along time.
I don't understand what the training purpose of that would be. I do take issue with the "plastic bottles full of pebbles" comment in the video. That has a purpose to get them used to and ok with loud distracting noises when they are in a fight. Mentally weak dogs will run away, which is not what you want in a street k9. But, stringing him up and kicking him? I don't see the point of that. That is abuse.

Well I am a professional trainer of dogs, and law enforcement style dogs are an area of speciality.
I have trained dogs hard before, however this trooper is going waaaay overboard. Given the time it takes to get the dog strung up, the sustained nature of the attack, and the lack of clear handling, there is really no justification for his actions from a training or handling standpoint.

This NC Hwy Patrolman is only doing his job! The public is not aware of how violent and vicious these K-9 animals can be, their not house pets. When trainning these K-9, someone puts on a protective suit and these dogs(K-9) attack. these dogs can bite through thses suits sometimes. Yes, you are right. The NC Highway Patrol refuses to reinstate him and has appealed that decision. They neglected to mention that fact in the news coverage earlier today but now have aded that to the newscast.

The judge found that he didn't abuse his dog any worse than his fellow troopers (who were obviously untrained themselves and who testified on his behalf that they also used these techniques to "train" their k-9 partners).

The dog, Ricoh, was retired and the whole program was discontinued.
Actually he hasn't gotten his job back... yet. A state administrative law judge and the State Personnel Commission have found that Jones should be reinstated, in part because the evidence indicated he was doing as he was taught. The patrol has appealed those decisions.
So we are still waiting to find out the ending to this debacle. What a damn shame if he gets away with this!

Fuck cops.I was pumping gas at a station when a cop pulled over a guy .The cop and the guy go at it and they roll into a ditch and the guys on top of the cop beating the shit out of him.The cop starts screaming "help he's going for my gun!", anyway if myself and two other guys had not been there the cop would have lost his fancy Glock pistol.He probably would have lost his life along with it. This is what the K-9 school he attended taught him to do...which his own agency sent him to. So in essence his own agency taught him to do this as a valid training method.
These are working dogs, not pets. Hunters use shock collars all the time on dogs for training, should they go to jail? "choke collars" are sold at every pet store in America, should they go to jail?
What some see as animal abuse others see as a training method which is why he won his case.
Is this wrong? Yes. Illegal? No.

Well I am a professional trainer of dogs, and law enforcement style dogs are an area of speciality.
I have trained dogs hard before, however this trooper is going waaaay overboard. Given the time it takes to get the dog strung up, the sustained nature of the attack, and the lack of clear handling, there is really no justification for his actions from a training or handling standpoint.
If he was taught to do this, who by?

This NC Hwy Patrolman is only doing his job! The public is not aware of how violent and vicious these K-9 animals can be, their not house pets. When trainning these K-9, someone puts on a protective suit and these dogs(K-9) attack. these dogs can bite through thses suits sometimes. Yes, you are right. The NC Highway Patrol refuses to reinstate him and has appealed that decision. They neglected to mention that fact in the news coverage earlier today but now have aded that to the newscast.
Aside from his employment issue, I am wondering whether he is being prosecuted for animal cruelty . . . because he certainly should be!

@dearaewi If a dog is trained correctly, all that is every req'd to bring them back under control is a slight leash correction, which is nothing more than a quick snap of the leash that does nothing more than jiggle the choker collar to get their attn. It doesn't in no way, shape, or form hurt the dog in any manner. It's like popping a diapered child w/5lbs of padding on the bum if they go where they shouldn't or need a pop on the bum. This clip is several months old. This trooper did get his job back, along with back pay - unbelievable!
The judge found that he didn't abuse his dog any worse than his fellow troopers (who were obviously untrained themselves and who testified on his behalf that they also used these techniques to "train" their k-9 partners).
So, if they all were abusing their dogs, it must be okay??? Disgusting.
The dog, Ricoh, was retired and the whole program was discontinued.

Actually he hasn't gotten his job back... yet. A state administrative law judge and the State Personnel Commission have found that Jones should be reinstated, in part because the evidence indicated he was doing as he was taught. The patrol has appealed those decisions.
So we are still waiting to find out the ending to this debacle. What a damn shame if he gets away with this!

The dog may be a tool, but unlike a taser or gun it is living and breathing creature. Plus, it's a proven fact that you get much more out of an animal when you train it humanely than if you train it with cruelty. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I read that a dog has intelligence that is equivelent to a seven year old? I'm sure every little kid would learn much faster if we strung them up and kicked their butts. The dog doesn't even unbderstand what it's meant to do in this situation.

Unfortunately, this behavior is far too common among police, especially those who are closet drunks and/or drug dependent. Studies show that up to 40% of police families suffer both emotional and physical abuse--much of which is never reported by the family members who live in a state of fear and uncertainty. Such families are often quite relieved when the cop in the family dies or is killed. It is heartening to seem how many of them are happy for the first time once the problem is gone.
