Not touchy, just curious how you define masculine & feminine traits in FS since you brought them up. We can debate merits of artistry w/o resorting to trite attributes of masculine/ feminine. I know many male ballet dancers are defined by society as "feminine". But they're more athletic than most guys, & they're straight tho there are many gay dancers as well.
If "masculine" = having powerful jumps, what about a male skaters who say, skates to a balletic program & lands quads/ other triples?
@sangfroidjen It's also the attitude of the skater that makes them seem masculine or feminine. All I am saying is that some of the very seemingly feminine male skaters could stand to have a little more of a masculine attitude.
Brian was always the standard of masculinity in FS because of his powerful jumps, but sangfroidjen is right, we can´t say exactly define masculine and feminine in FS. Plushenko use to have quad combos and Bielmann spin and spiral in the same program. Was he feminine or masculine, or both?
@SimonaCB Well said! I would say Plushenko was masculine, he skated like a man but had great artistry. You can be artistic and masculine at the same time.
@MikaSirikit4Ever Spoke person said he had stomachache...later Brian himself added that indeed he wasn't feeling at best, but could have skated only he didn't want to jeopardize his previous score or make a poor figure...
well, he simply is not there....stiff, many mistakes, expressionless....I think he retired because he knew he was not going far. I feel sorry for him, but perhaps, after many season of this, he should consider leaving competitions...
i feel bad for brian, this is really bad! hes spins havent improved, i feel like i seen this program before. no choreography...just poses and hand movements. not to mention hes stiff as always. the only thing that has kept him as a top skater is his technicality/jumps and it looks like hes having problems with that too. maybe he needs to hang it up and go on a high note. or take a break. i still like him
@AshesWithin7 His camel spin has improved, but you would have noticed that if you had watched him from earlier in his career. In fact, he worked with Lucinda Ruh and she helped him work on all of his spins.
@Greensleeves1984 im sure he has improved, no doubt about that. but the position on his spins are still very simple and basic and not up to the level where he should be or there other top skaters are. i really wish him the best! hes a great athlete and has done alot for the sport.
@AshesWithin7 Well, I simply don't agree. I think Joubert's skating is wonderful and at least he skates like a man, unlike a lot of the other men who skate like women! LOL! You'd never catch Joubert doing a layback!
@Greensleeves1984 Are you implying that men skaters who skate w/o artistry = skating like a man? I'm really interested in how you define masculinity in figure skating. So is Plushenko a feminine skater b/c he does or did the Bielmann spin?
Oh well, I guess some Joubert fans ( not you specifically) just have to inject superficial gender politics into the mix in order to prop up their stiff, un-artistic skater.
@sangfroidjen A bit touchy, aren't we? LOL! Joubert's artistry has improved through the years, he is masculine and artistic, but I guess you don't agree. You didn't understand my comment correctly. What I meant to say is that you can skate like a man and have great artistic components, without looking so feminine.
@sangfroidjen I could never put my finger on it, but you hit the nail on the head! that is why his skating is boring--it always looks the same. I used to like him when he was younger, but he's gotten even stiffer as he's aged. Sorry, Brian, time to hang it up.
@countessberrywood Joubert has always skated stiffly. He has this weird way of moving his head only in-line with his torso, instead of moving it in all directions irrespective of his upper body placement. Also those stiff arms. Whereas most skaters improve artistically over course of their careers, Joubert hasn't. A dancer he is not, in fact Antonio's choreo only makes his weakenesses more glaring.
He's fun to watch when his jumps are good, otherwise he doesn't have much to offer us.
the costume is scandalous... -.-

@iceskaterrn This year he is trying something new. David Wilson is his choreographer and his lp is to classical music, he never tried that before.

We know Joubert is the greatest skater even if he feels much pressure.
We fans always support for him.
