  • Do you know where "Buy the Farm" came from?

    Back in the day when a pilot crashed in a field of crops the Farmer would be paid for the lost crops. (I think this originally came from Kansas where a lot of training fields operated).

    Buying an acre of crops was probably not uncommon after a crash.

    But, when a crash was bad enough the Whole farm would be destroyed.

    As in:

    "Hey ! Charley augered that one in so bad they had to buy the whole farm"

    I know...boring stuff...but I thought it was cool.

    The early F-104 had a downward track(bottom ejecting) ejection seat.

    2 of the ejections seats on a B-52 eject from the bottom as well.

  • @JohnLeePedimore Early 104's were fitted with downward ejecting seats due to concerns over impacting the razor-thin vertical stabilizer when ejecting at high speeds. 104 pilots were trained to make every attempt to roll the aircraft inverted if they had to eject at low altitudes. After 104's were retrofitted with more powerful upward ejecting seats, several pilots died when ejecting at low altitude after rolling their aircraft inverted out of habit.

    Blades blasted away by special charges right before ejection, its part of the process.

  • @will891410 The Russian Ka-50 is equipped with ejection seats which can be used after the rotor blades are separated from the rotor hub by explosive bolts.

  • @bajesus666 half of its true..just dont go inverted and try to eject...not gonna work..

  • @bajesus666 I'm pretty sure it's the same principle, I see no way why it could've changed, I play the DCS A-10C simulator which is the same that the US Air Force uses, and thanks to that video, I survived twice from a battle damaged A-10C. First ejection was simple. Both wings teared off, time to punch out. Second one, was more complicated. I had only one wing teared off, and before my first ejection I had stabilized with one wing. But this time It didn't worked and I punched out 1 second short.
