this is nice to see. when i was young, back in the 50's and early 60's, i rode this from dwtn So bend, to a stop called lydick. my granma lived at the lake there. i rode it every weekend back and fourth. it did sway a lot! we used to put pennies on the track when it was coming, so it would 'squash' them. sill have some! i also remember , when the brakes failed in so bend, and it went roaring thru town, and crashed into the garage where the tracks ended! they were this orange color back then.
The CSS&SB Railroad in my mind is the BEST there is Rail Fan and Ride. The crews are the most friendly of any line that's ever been out there!. I met many dear friends who worked for the line during the time I filmed "The South Shore in the 1970's". I rode the Hegewisch EB dead head car a lot with the crews, had coffee, Dunkin' Donuts, and never once had my ten ride ticket punched! Several of these friends are seen in my movie. I was lucky indeed to have met these
I grew up riding these trains. I used to go downtown South Bend across the river to the storage yard and catch a ride through the car washer! Thanks! Perfect music!
I'm from South Bend and also remember when South Shore trains went all the way downtown. Oddly enough, I only rode on it once, two weeks before we moved to New Jersey in April of 1967.
I have a South Shore collection;K-Line trains, posters, train schedules, many photos and 3 books about the South Shore, I wish NICTD would allow reproductions of the "Little Train That Could" decal for sale. That would be something neat to have for a collectible.
Has anyone been up to East Troy,Wisconsin? North of Lake Geneva, there is a working train museum with to rehabbed South Shore cars, on a special dinner train in the Summer months. I plan on doing this next summer, 2010, got to see how they run and sound. They always had that peculiar acceleration electric car noise. Lots of good memories.
I remember one gal from Hammond referring to the South Shore as "the Vomit Comet".
Personally, I always liked riding the old orange cars, especially at high speed east of Mich City. At that location, it was most like an old interurban. Never got to ride the North Shore or 'Roarin' Elgin', but the street running in Mich City & rural racetrack east of the shops was a treat.
I knew someone a long time ago, she also called the South Shore Trains vomit comet. I think its great to keep the history alive of the South Shore. I am glad they are still running and hope they stay in business
I rode in some of those smelly old orange crates in the late 1960's when the SS still ran through the streets of South Bend, IN. I sure wish they had a restored 4 car set of the old MU'srunning on weekends today!
i rode the old css trolley to randoph st w/ my dad to mcclurg court cenima in late '77 big memories to ride the train from gary to chicago r.i.p. dad i had fun thanks
Many memories. The old orange trains were great. Only 56 minutes from Randolph St to Tremont (the old Dunes stop) in the 50's and 60's. Flourescent lighting and air conditioned...ahead of their time.
Hello this is Norm from Lake Station and thanks for taking the time to put this together so well I realy enjoyed watching it.I rode entire line but that was about 1963 and 1967/68.
Great job! I am proud to live in a section of America that still hasn't forgotten its once-great interurban system was a convenient and affordable way to get around. Hopefully the proud American railroad will regrow one day!

I rode this line back and forth between Chicago and South Bend when I was at Notre Dame from 1961 thru 1965. We called it the "Rattler".
