I drive an Alpine 1.3LS most days, she is a 1981 model, on the log book it records the colour as "beige". Had her for 2 years and driven 10k with no faults.
talbot solara minx, 1985 322,000miles took me around europe for 2 months, never missed a beat, now bmw 540 v8, 11,000 miles, engine blew up, scrap. give me my old talbot back!
pple call talbots crap but the samba was first realized in the USSR in 1964 as the Moskvich Nami 1in 1977 the Moskvich 2149 and was regarded as very advanced
Hahaha ... they don't look nice but they have a lot of nice stuff for there age , plus they could carry a lot... I used Solara more then 5 years to carry 1.7 to 2 tone on the trayler. Say what you whant that baby sure holds toghether.
A similar car to the Talbot Horizon was manufactured in the USA. Called the Plymouth Horizon, it was the first domestically assembled front drive car in the US. Despite the same appearance, the mechanicals were completely different.
The Horizon, Alpine and Solara were essentially the same chassis, using the same suspension and drivetrain. All three were rusty & rattly (then again, wasn't any 70's/80 car) but the horizon handled better as it was shorter
The strange thing is, although the Chrysler/Simca/Talbot Horizon and Alpine were dull, rattly and badly made, they managed to win European Car of the Year in 1976 and 1979 respectively. How?? Were the panels composed of fools?
Made redundant in 1990.BMW went back and was given £425 compensation returning it in the notice period - Bought an '81 met green Alpine with bashed in passenger door (stylish!) for £395. Bashed the dent at home with hammer and lump of wood, resprayed a few months later in the shed...Looked brilliant! Car went like a steam train! Had it 3 years, only the alternator gave probs at end (why when selling does this happen?) - sold it with full MOT to an AA engineer(!)for..£395 ...RIP 'Bucket' !!
from New Zealand. the reason pommy cars died, about as reliable as an honest world leader!I had an alpine with low kms. gearboxes had aids! fuck me. I will only buy from Germany now! fuck Austin and Talbot and morris it was all poo! hello Audi and BMW!
Your bad luck, they couldnt have been that bad as the Talbot based Peugoets were made up until 1994! Also the Talbot based Citroen AX until 1997....if you want to be a stereotype who drives a german car go ahead, i just be happy with my Brazialian built Beetle....
are you kidding??? which cars have you lot ever made, none! German cars are terrible, Ive owned 7 in total and all have been utter, utter shite, electrical, trim problems galore, especially vag stuff!! SHIT
My first car was a Talbot Solara; my Dad had to teach me how to double de clutch cos the synchro had walked. The engine sounded like someone had loosened everything - but dam reliable nonetheless.
In Ireland the ads used to have the tagline 'Saw your Solara at the races/supermarket/bank/match' etc, something 'prestigious' to indicate that it was 'up-market'(!). So in no time, if you owned one, people would come up to you and say 'Saw your Solara outside the VD clinic' etc
if the marque had proper backing they could have faced of rivals like the new cavalier by 1991 but by lack of investment and mistakes the company didnt survive here was the mistakes 1 campingcar it wasnt an rv or a trailer it cost $20'0000 they didnt get back 1990 the tagora it overed the same as a volvo and was ditched in 1993 the murana was ditched in 1994 the last talbot was a red talbot samba rio that rolled of the line in 1997
They are like anything, look after it and it will last.... as for rattle rattle engines, that honour has been past on to the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Astras of this world, cheap and abused motor cars too!! PS My Samba hasnt yet broken down, 25 years and counting.....
..........and of course, the Citroen AX was originally going to be the new Talbot Samba! There are prototype pics around with it wearing a full width radiator grill, and Talbot badge!
The 305 was not based on the Horizon! That was the 309, which actually was more 205 based except for engines and drive train from Simca. The Americans were the ones making the european Horizon under Dodge and Plymouth well in to the 90s!
Hehe, yes they were slightly prone to rusting weren't they. I also owned a couple of Avengers which were just as bad from a rust point of view, but they were nice to drive and I liked 'em.
Heh, tell me about it, my first car was a Samba and I've never seen a car rot so much in the year I had it. Still had a lot of affection for the thing.
Best one(s) I ever saw were the Sambe Convertible, still see the odd one in the summer, the covers come off when the sun's out, only way to preserve 'em!
The Talbot still lives on in a small way, for instance the Rapier 406 SE which was a Solara SE, hard to beleive they were still making the Horizon in south america until recently along side a VW badged Morris Ital!
Ah yes, I think Peugeot might own a fair few names from the Rootes/Simca days! - Oh yes, that VW rebadged Ital - Actually in Argentina it was the Talbot Avenger, rebadged as VW 1500 (VW apparently bought out Chrysler's Argentinian operations), and given a facelift disturbingly similar to a Morris Ital! It lasted in production until the early 1990s!
Hey. Just read your comments. I think the Ital in South America you refer to was actually an Avenger with an Italesque front grafted on. They called it the VW 1500. You could also buy an avenger there badged as a Dodge Polara! Hope this helps. Regards. Paul
A great alternative range of cars there - it is a shame that Peugeot didn't keep that up - Talbot's heritage, lets just say it is one very convoluted, and involved a LOT of marque-names, from both England (Rootes group) and France (Simca).

Chrysler put VW engines in the U.S. Horizons. The tappy Simca engine was not fit for US motorways.
