Hey Kurt, you are a genius working out a punk theory of astrodynamics while on orbit!
At 8:50 you had "rotated your orbit's line of apsides". At 15:40 you were "precessing your orbit's angular momentum vector" like a baaws.
By 16:07 you had picked out a point called the "ascending node" and realized you had to fire perpendicular to your orbital plane at just that spot to adjust your "wankery" with Mun. Just keep in mind the phrase "ascending node, anti-normal", and you'll be fine next time.
Btw, does anyone here know how to align your orbit with the Mun'/Moon's orbit? I need my AP to collide with the Mun's trajectory but instead it's shooting over and above it.
cir·cu·lar·ize/ˈsərkyələˌrīz/ : Distribute a large number of letters, leaflets, or questionnaires to (a group of people) in order to advertise something or canvas opinion.
what you need to do do is make a burn to get your apogee at about 100.000 and once your craft passes your apogee make a second burn to get an even orbit
You were on the right track Kurt: during your last burn you should have faced in precisely the opposite direction. It doesn't look like you noticed, but you tilted your orbital plane towards a polar orbit.
Also, while in the far-away view ("orbital"?) toggled with M, you can bring up the instrument in the bottom-centre of the screen by clicking the triangle thingy there, which allows you to control your ship from that view. Useful for precise burns ;)
Apoapsis and periapsis are the generic terms for orbits around any celestial body; apogee and perigee only work for orbits around Earth. Each individual body can have its own peri- / apo- suffix (-hermion for Mercury, -areion for Mars etc.). I guess would make orbits around planet Kerbin have a "Perikerb" and an "Apokerb"? It has a certain ring to it.
Kurt, your plane-changing was fundamentally correct. In your second plane change burn you were actually facing the wrong direction: you were altering your orbital plane farther away from the equator instead of towards it. You were also not perfectly at 90 degrees so without some sort of autopilot to hold you there, you'll inevitably gain or lose some orbital velocity and thus change your altitudes.
if you want to 'circularize' your orbit, don't wait for the altitude, just at 90degree angle from your max altitude, that way you will push your orbit without gaining too much unneeded altitude ...
If you disable S.A.S. when the Command Module has touched down you can attempt to recover it yourself by using the W,A,S,D,Q,E controls. The results are... interesting.
You can’t “move the whole orbit down around the thingy”, because the orbit is always around the primary body’s centre of gravity. When you burn to tilt the orbit, you’ll always tilt it along the axis between the COG and your ship, so you do indeed want to do it when you’re intersecting the equatorial plane. The second burn was in exactly the wrong direction, though.
Kurt, remember basic astrophysics! Mun, even being virtual still have a kind of strong gravity well, and as you now gravity wells are spherical. About 2/3 of the way to the Mun, you will be catched by the gravity forces.
@samgray22 he hasn't in a long while. Last one was 4 days ago, the one before it was more than a week ago. I am disappoint. But as I said, "that's just me"....

Kurt, having done moon landings (with stock parts) before, I can say that your method of modifying your orbit to meet the Mun's is correct. However, the timing can be solved in this way: if your orbit goes more towards 90 degrees, wait until the Mun rises above Kerbin before you burn, and if your orbit goes more towards 270 degrees, wait until the Mun sets.
Keep in mind when designing that you will probably need to retro burn at the Mun, no matter how accurate you are, to land straight.
Hey Kurt! Just another little hint. At the moment you are throwing away a lot of energy during your start: If you wait before gaining momentum for your orbit Kerbin is slowing you down every second you still move up. Your first inclination after leaving the atmosphere needs to be WAY more extreme - like 30 degrees above the horizon. Outside the atmosphere you wanna gain horizontal momentum which was limited in the atmosphere due to the drag.
Kurt To flatten out your orbit be sure to aim at let's say 90 line and stay on it as best as possible. The mun is not extremely hard to get to just landing is and leaving is.
OK, I really don't mean to be patronizing Kurt but believe me when I say - this rocket is a ROCK! You call that wobbly?! Wobbly is when you can't say if you have a vector 'cuz it's all over the place, wobbly is when lowest and top stages are doing their best to fly in opposite directions! Wobbly is when you can't make adjustments to vector because it's showing different direction every second! What do you know about wobbly fool?!
(this comment is written with *wink**wink* in mind :) don't rage )
@kurtjmac Be careful when you try to orbit the Mun. I tried once. Ended up getting the three stranded in a large orbit around the sun without any fuel. I left them to orbit for a year to see if they would intercept Kerbin again, but no joy.
Kurt, I've tried getting this game, but it says something about needing to decompress a file. Um... help? What does that mean and where do I go to do it?
@sourbabies just click on the downloaded file. It'll create a folder, which you can place wherever you want. Both windows (including XP) and OS X can decompress zip file. But if it doesn't work, look for WinZip or 7-zip / seven-zip on google
Have you ever played Orbiter. I though I heard you say you played in Far Lands Or Bust. If you did you should definitely be familiar with the orbital mechanics. All your guess were pretty right. It is just extremely hard to plan any orbital trip without any sort of autopilots or visual aids.

The universal term is "Apoapsis" (and "Periapsis"), and since this isn't Earth, the correct term is "Apoapsis" (and "Periapsis").

Kurt, I think you are the best minecraft commentator over Yogscast, CaptainSparkelz, Total Biscuit, and all others because you basicly talk about random stuff in a unique way
I once saw Jebediah freak out, I wasn't paying attention to my engines, one exploded and caused a chain reaction which blew up my whole spacecraft. In the last half second, I saw Jebediah in terror.
"So I need to burn here to make the orbit more of an egg shape so it intersects the Mun's orbit. But I also need to aim where the Mun's going to be when I get there!"
Getting to mun isn't that hard. Just aim roughly at it and get that egg shape you want orbit the planet a few times untilled you get caught in its gravity. It will give you a slingshot trajectory slow down near pe and it will close the slingshot. I found this by trial and error. Many kerbals now lay on the surface of mun as I have been working on a way to land. Good luck and thanks for showing me this game!!!
@lunkheroofnuts I had two stages, stage 1 had the command pod and a parachute as regular, second stage had a liquid rocket with 4 things of fuel, and I had 3 more put around that with 4 things of fuel each, I had wings for stability, and a LOT of struts so it wouldn't blow up. that thing got me so close, yet their power was where I had to be just a command pod to orbit, if I saved my fuel, I wouldn't reach the orbit. D:
Hey Kurt, just saying. I know you like vanilla, but with a game so early in dev there's not much you can do. Once you reach the moon (Or should I say, 'Mun') you should get the C7 Flight Pack and play around with that some!
This series is great, please don't stop making it, kurt! I've downloaded KSP, but I'm terrible at it, and it really lags my shaggy PC, you're my only hope of getting to the Mun
I think boosting up, perpendicular to the equator and tangential to the planet surface, will turn the orbit up for the next 180° and down for the previous half, with the equator as reference, and boosting down would cause the inverse... But that's just my intuition after watching his first test.
So I think he didn't aim his second boost correctly. He aimed down instead of up, when he wanted to turn the next half up.
Kurt, I know this won't be relevant till you record new footage: something that might help you in making your orbits more consistent, if you have an Android there's an app, KSP Orbit, you input the height you want and it'll tell you how fast you need for a circular orbit. Also you can pull up the Nav Ball on the map and control your rocket from there, might help.
And I can't wait until you start "Mun and Back or Bust!" Ma BoB is also the name of the Kermin Bros. aunt that nobody talks about.
@123arianagrandefan you do know you don't point the spacecraft to where the moon is currently. you point to where it is going to be when you get there. other wise you will miss it.

You can control your throttle while looking at orbital view. At the bottom of the screen there is a tab that bring up your navigation ball.

Kurt! I love this series! I would love to see longer episodes of this though! Just when you are getting into it, it ends!

Congratulations, it's rocket-science.

I was playing around in this game and was making stupid designs I thought would never do anything, and then one got me in an orbit with the sun. :D
Deliphin11 1 month ago
@Deliphin11 same as me! My first stage had about 9 engines and 18 fuel tanks.
lunkheroofnuts 1 month ago
@lunkheroofnuts I had two stages, stage 1 had the command pod and a parachute as regular, second stage had a liquid rocket with 4 things of fuel, and I had 3 more put around that with 4 things of fuel each, I had wings for stability, and a LOT of struts so it wouldn't blow up. that thing got me so close, yet their power was where I had to be just a command pod to orbit, if I saved my fuel, I wouldn't reach the orbit. RELEASE DOWNLOAD TO ROCKETS!!!
brandon35335 1 month ago
I've got to start taking notes while watching these. My first "successful" orbit ended up going around the sun with no fuel left.
Biidi2001 1 month ago
Hey Kurt, just saying. I know you like vanilla, but with a game so early in dev there's not much you can do. Once you reach the moon (Or should I say, 'Mun') you should get the C7 Flight Pack and play around with that some!

This series is great, please don't stop making it, kurt! I've downloaded KSP, but I'm terrible at it, and it really lags my shaggy PC, you're my only hope of getting to the Mun

@theoneandonlyandyman well, from the website...
I guess you could try torrenting it since it's not a big deal while it's still free

Kurt, if you de-orbit so the green circle is on the purple one, you actually will land on the pad.

honestly my favorite series on youtube right now, i love you kurt :D
guitarsk8r11 1 month ago

Kurt, don't worry about overheating SRBs. They burn out before they overheat.
MrJacksley 1 month ago
@MrJacksley Not exactly true, if you have to many of them together, they can overheat and explode. But generally, they dont explode.
