  • Hey Kurt, you are a genius working out a punk theory of astrodynamics while on orbit!

At 8:50 you had "rotated your orbit's line of apsides". At 15:40 you were "precessing your orbit's angular momentum vector" like a baaws.

By 16:07 you had picked out a point called the "ascending node" and realized you had to fire perpendicular to your orbital plane at just that spot to adjust your "wankery" with Mun. Just keep in mind the phrase "ascending node, anti-normal", and you'll be fine next time.

  • Btw, does anyone here know how to align your orbit with the Mun'/Moon's orbit? I need my AP to collide with the Mun's trajectory but instead it's shooting over and above it.

  • Holy crap, solid boosters in space really pack a punch on your trajectory! Nice rocket!

  • I tried to make a Kerbin slingshot but ended up slingshotting myself into a sun orbit :/

  • i made it to the mun albeit it crashed but i still made it

  • If you press X you put your throttle to 0 while being in the map (makes it easy to match your orbit with the moon or make a perfect orbit :)

Thump's up so he sees it.

  • cir·cu·lar·ize/ˈsərkyələˌrīz/ : Distribute a large number of letters, leaflets, or questionnaires to (a group of people) in order to advertise something or canvas opinion.

  • 0:14 *Snoooooooooorrrt*

  • And throughout the whole flight, Jebediah Kerman laughs in the face of death.

  • it rotated the orbit. dim wit.

  • do do. :)

  • Me : Houston, we got a problem, the screen blacked out

Houston: you accidentally turned off your monitor. dumb ass

  • if its legal, can you put the folder where the rockets save for a download?

  • what you need to do do is make a burn to get your apogee at about 100.000 and once your craft passes your apogee make a second burn to get an even orbit

  • meh.

My Alpha 0.9.9 got me to 30,000 meters and it was just a liquid fuel rocet.

  • Just wait till when he tries to orbit the sun...

  • Couldn't you slingshot yourself out to the moon?

  • jebedaiha will HUNT YOU IN YOUR SLEEP

  • You were on the right track Kurt: during your last burn you should have faced in precisely the opposite direction. It doesn't look like you noticed, but you tilted your orbital plane towards a polar orbit.

Also, while in the far-away view ("orbital"?) toggled with M, you can bring up the instrument in the bottom-centre of the screen by clicking the triangle thingy there, which allows you to control your ship from that view. Useful for precise burns ;)

  • Without fail, the astronauts look like this: D: [: D:

  • @Mahkia Nvm, Bob seems to be freaking out more then usual.

  • @150booyadragon LOL, you were partially right, though! Normally Bob's a little less involved in the whole situation.

  • @Mahkia And with in-game fail, the astronauts look like this D: [: D:

  • "when I do do what I do, I need to do the same thing that I did here" SPACE TALK!!! hahah good 1 Kurt

  • i find orbiting the sun easier than orbiting the earth XD

  • AHAH! I CAN ORBIT THE SUN! BEAT THAT KURT! :D

  • i have a half fuel tank left.

  • anyone else stuck orbiting around the sun when u tried to orbit the mun

  • 6:04 hey look a giant monkey face in the background 0.0

  • Apoapsis and periapsis are the generic terms for orbits around any celestial body; apogee and perigee only work for orbits around Earth. Each individual body can have its own peri- / apo- suffix (-hermion for Mercury, -areion for Mars etc.). I guess would make orbits around planet Kerbin have a "Perikerb" and an "Apokerb"? It has a certain ring to it.

  • Kurt, your plane-changing was fundamentally correct. In your second plane change burn you were actually facing the wrong direction: you were altering your orbital plane farther away from the equator instead of towards it. You were also not perfectly at 90 degrees so without some sort of autopilot to hold you there, you'll inevitably gain or lose some orbital velocity and thus change your altitudes.

  • im having trouble with downloading, my computer keeps saying the download folder is empty. can someone help me?

  • @TakaNuva231

I was having a similar problem. Just keep trying to download it and you will, eventually, get it.

  • 10:13 ooh thats happening really quickly egegegegegegegeggg! Kurts sex noise :P

  • "Thats really sensitive" "thats what she said" Why never thats what he said? I have a really sensitive penis head after a *cough*. Really now.

  • @MusicTheoryNeil

Play the game! it's fun to explode your rockets

  • well while u are aiming for the moon don't throttle up too much:::

i did throttle to full and started orbiting the sun :(

  • i like how you included the kermans in the tags

  • if you want to 'circularize' your orbit, don't wait for the altitude, just at 90degree angle from your max altitude, that way you will push your orbit without gaining too much unneeded altitude ...

  • @MusicTheoryNeil Its difficult but the tutorials are really good. Time passes as though you're playing Minecraft!

  • When you decide to go to the mun, be sure to make a correct orbit. I did mine wrong and I went into orbit around the sun. Without any fuel left .

  • Once i went into an orbit around the sun....

  • @MusicTheoryNeil

    It's honestly not that hard.

  • im rely liking the kerbal lp

  • @lost4468yt He is doing that...

  • my rcs doesn't work. anyone have an idea why?

  • Kurt! Fire to the top of the inferior hemisphere of the naviball to adjust your orbit (when at the apoapsis)

  • Mine was tuck orbiting the planet...forever...

  • I was expecting a: Helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo D:

  • If you disable S.A.S. when the Command Module has touched down you can attempt to recover it yourself by using the W,A,S,D,Q,E controls. The results are... interesting.

  • i messed up my orbit and it became a line then i went afk, when i came back i was rapidly crash-landing on the mun :)

luckiest landing i have ever had

  • been messing about, managed to build a craft that can easily get into circular orbit and back. now modifying it to get to the moon!

  • i played this game today its awesome! but my rocket keeps blowing up when i go to my last stage :(

  • @Timmysjoblom you may have to wait untill the pre. stages rockets are done, if your not

  • Your orbital eccentricity was 0.0086. By comparison, the earth's is 0.0167, nearly double. Good job (:

  • How do you turn on the RCS?

  • @aluluei I think it's R

  • @aluluei press r

  • rofl, space flight, trail and error. Even thought this is kinda wrong it was fun :P

  • You make it look so easy, my shuttles either shake themselves to pieces or explode

  • @Xbox360fan4life a couple of my designs just fell apart on the launchpad :D

  • So you got your orbit , plan on making the moon.

I once made it in 144 days around the sun , sure they got lost , died of starvation or never met a another space race.

But it prooves that i already taken the flight around the entier solar system. Tadaah :D

  • Kerbals: Houston we have a problem, the engines just turned off .

    Houston: Nope, just lag.

  • @MusicTheoryNeil When you get the hang of it, it's as easy as pie.

  • @kurtjmac can you do a how to install

  • You can’t “move the whole orbit down around the thingy”, because the orbit is always around the primary body’s centre of gravity. When you burn to tilt the orbit, you’ll always tilt it along the axis between the COG and your ship, so you do indeed want to do it when you’re intersecting the equatorial plane. The second burn was in exactly the wrong direction, though.

  • Jebediah: I can see my house from here!

  • Kurt, remember basic astrophysics! Mun, even being virtual still have a kind of strong gravity well, and as you now gravity wells are spherical. About 2/3 of the way to the Mun, you will be catched by the gravity forces.

  • @ManeroXR 5/7 of the way

  • @MusicTheoryNeil Nah, it is actually easy! And besides, if you buy it you would be helping the devs!

  • Mun or BUST!!!!!

  • Kurt you can speed how fast the game runs at in the top left corner...

  • @lost4468yt He used that several times in this video...

  • Aww. I kind of wish Kurt would go back to the old days of Far Lands or Bust, but that's just me...

  • @forsurenoob he still does Far Lands or Bust! just it does get boring just minecraft all the time!!!

  • @samgray22 he hasn't in a long while. Last one was 4 days ago, the one before it was more than a week ago. I am disappoint. But as I said, "that's just me"....

  • 5:39 XD

  • @rigo230997 the downloadserver is stressing out due to the overwhelming amounts of kurt's followers trying to get the game ;] try a downloadlink mentioned in this thread: kerbalspaceprogram [DOT] com/forum/index [DOT] php?topic=5715.0

  • i have problem downloading it. can somebody help?

  • Moar! I want to see more!... Because all of MY rockets explode before they launch...

  • Kurt, having done moon landings (with stock parts) before, I can say that your method of modifying your orbit to meet the Mun's is correct. However, the timing can be solved in this way: if your orbit goes more towards 90 degrees, wait until the Mun rises above Kerbin before you burn, and if your orbit goes more towards 270 degrees, wait until the Mun sets.

Keep in mind when designing that you will probably need to retro burn at the Mun, no matter how accurate you are, to land straight.

  • *even more hints*

Hey Kurt! Just another little hint. At the moment you are throwing away a lot of energy during your start: If you wait before gaining momentum for your orbit Kerbin is slowing you down every second you still move up. Your first inclination after leaving the atmosphere needs to be WAY more extreme - like 30 degrees above the horizon. Outside the atmosphere you wanna gain horizontal momentum which was limited in the atmosphere due to the drag.

    Just saying!

    Keep on spacing!

  • Reaching the Mun is not as decieving as it would seem. It's landing on it and actually getting OUT of it that's really hard.

  • Kurt To flatten out your orbit be sure to aim at let's say 90 line and stay on it as best as possible. The mun is not extremely hard to get to just landing is and leaving is.

  • OK, I really don't mean to be patronizing Kurt but believe me when I say - this rocket is a ROCK! You call that wobbly?! Wobbly is when you can't say if you have a vector 'cuz it's all over the place, wobbly is when lowest and top stages are doing their best to fly in opposite directions! Wobbly is when you can't make adjustments to vector because it's showing different direction every second! What do you know about wobbly fool?!

(this comment is written with *wink**wink* in mind :) don't rage )

  • I lold on "thats what she said" joke :D

  • @ Kurtjmac I really love your videos, also Kurt, you should play another flash game like QWOP. Please reply. Thx

  • When I DO DO what I DO, then I need to DO what I DID.. lol?

  • Screw the moon, go to the sun! :D

  • I like how you are approaching this from a sense of realism and seriousness. Those three little guys are in good hands.

  • Are those white/greyish spots on Kerbin cities? I would be interested to see what they look like.

  • It's all about thrust. Next Time: Orbital Experiments.

  • @kurtjmac Be careful when you try to orbit the Mun. I tried once. Ended up getting the three stranded in a large orbit around the sun without any fuel. I left them to orbit for a year to see if they would intercept Kerbin again, but no joy.

  • really good orbit the ISS orbits at 360km by about 350km :P

  • Kurt, I've tried getting this game, but it says something about needing to decompress a file. Um... help? What does that mean and where do I go to do it?

  • @sourbabies just click on the downloaded file. It'll create a folder, which you can place wherever you want. Both windows (including XP) and OS X can decompress zip file. But if it doesn't work, look for WinZip or 7-zip / seven-zip on google

  • when you can try for orbiting the sun (I've done it)

  • Ay know how to get the parichutes from my boosters to deploy? The never seem too despite me plachem in what i think the right spots.

  • @blizrfiz just make sure they are in the same stage as the radial decouplers, they should then automagically go

  • @PendragonDaGreat gotcha, thanks.

  • Have you ever played Orbiter. I though I heard you say you played in Far Lands Or Bust. If you did you should definitely be familiar with the orbital mechanics. All your guess were pretty right. It is just extremely hard to plan any orbital trip without any sort of autopilots or visual aids.

  • @MusicTheoryNeil I totally agree

  • @kurtjmac Seriously, Kurt, if you want to learn about orbital-mechanics, play some more Orbiter. And, "Apogee" is only a term used for the highest point in an orbit around Earth (and "Perigee" for the lowest). The universal term is "Apoapsis" (and "Periapsis"), and since this isn't Earth, the correct term is "Apoapsis" (and "Periapsis").

  • I got them into orbit, but then they got stuck in orbit

  • In the orbital map, you can open up the navball and then you can change your heading and throttle while still on the map screen. Makes for much easier orbital adjustments. Also, the RCS thrusters are more powerful than you think, I've used them to change my orbit drastically many times.

  • @kuroryuutube If you make a ship out of rcs fuel tanks, covered with hundreds of rcs, you can even take-off and make into orbit :P

  • The Irish Lantern is on the Mun.

  • Kurt's becoming quite the astronaut

  • no one likes Jeb in the ksp community

  • That last phase of your rocket look like a penis :)

  • Love this series(:

  • You do not need your orbit to be in the same plane as that of the moon, as long as you are near the moon you can bring yourself orbit around it. The moon is spherical object and all sides are the same gravity-wise.

  • Yes, you can land on the moon with current stuff in the game

  • Kurt knows how to space. I'm impressed!

  • This is way off topic Kurt but do you know where IrishLantern is?

  • Kurt when you are full throttle press x and you'll cut the engines without holding lctl

  • Bill: Craps pants when subjected to loud noises

Jeb: NAFOD (No Apparent Fear Of Death)

Bob: Craps pants when someone says his name

  • Jebediah seems to be rather ambivalent..

  • KURT! you don't understand!! Once you're high enough, 40-50 thousand ms you should just fly horizontally. You'll continue to gain altitude but makes a much nicer orbit. Plus, it saves a LOT of fuel.

  • Kurt go to da moon. This video somehow relates to cats. Kurt screw preparation I've done this hundreds of times. Let me use a superfluous amount of words to get an irrelevant point across. Make these longer. Use some mod. Like so he can see.Blatant misuse of grammer. At 7:21 you can see something. Check out my new channel, I'm not begging I promise. CAPS LOCK SO YOU KNOW IM SERIOUS. .........There, now you have no reason to read any of these comments.

  • Keep it up kurt, loving these videos!

  • Just an FYI:

You're gonna need a MUCH bigger rocket to get to the moon.

    Otherwise, good job.

  • So i'm trying to pre-order this game and download it, but why does it need my shipping informaition? I'm buying a download game, not a book.

  • Kurt, I think you are the best minecraft commentator over Yogscast, CaptainSparkelz, Total Biscuit, and all others because you basicly talk about random stuff in a unique way

  • You can control your throttle while looking at orbital view. At the bottom of the screen there is a tab that bring up your navigation ball.

  • Kurt! I love this series! I would love to see longer episodes of this though! Just when you are getting into it, it ends!

  • GO TO DA MOON!

  • Horizon in the space?

  • I once saw Jebediah freak out, I wasn't paying attention to my engines, one exploded and caused a chain reaction which blew up my whole spacecraft. In the last half second, I saw Jebediah in terror.

  • "So I need to burn here to make the orbit more of an egg shape so it intersects the Mun's orbit. But I also need to aim where the Mun's going to be when I get there!"

    Congratulations, it's rocket-science.

  • does anybody else see the face in the stars at 7:10?

  • @kiln17650 That's not stars :D

  • GDI i want this game now.

  • You probs make it to the mun but you might knot

  • not gonna lie, I miss flob

  • hey you could create the first IKSS (International Kerbal Space Station)

  • **spoilers**

Getting to mun isn't that hard. Just aim roughly at it and get that egg shape you want orbit the planet a few times untilled you get caught in its gravity. It will give you a slingshot trajectory slow down near pe and it will close the slingshot. I found this by trial and error. Many kerbals now lay on the surface of mun as I have been working on a way to land. Good luck and thanks for showing me this game!!!

  • I was playing around in this game and was making stupid designs I thought would never do anything, and then one got me in an orbit with the sun. :D

  • @Deliphin11 same as me! My first stage had about 9 engines and 18 fuel tanks.

  • @lunkheroofnuts I had two stages, stage 1 had the command pod and a parachute as regular, second stage had a liquid rocket with 4 things of fuel, and I had 3 more put around that with 4 things of fuel each, I had wings for stability, and a LOT of struts so it wouldn't blow up. that thing got me so close, yet their power was where I had to be just a command pod to orbit, if I saved my fuel, I wouldn't reach the orbit. D:

  • RELEASE DOWNLOAD TO ROCKETS!!!

  • I've got to start taking notes while watching these. My first "successful" orbit ended up going around the sun with no fuel left.

  • Hey Kurt, just saying. I know you like vanilla, but with a game so early in dev there's not much you can do. Once you reach the moon (Or should I say, 'Mun') you should get the C7 Flight Pack and play around with that some!

  • This series is great, please don't stop making it, kurt! I've downloaded KSP, but I'm terrible at it, and it really lags my shaggy PC, you're my only hope of getting to the Mun

  • @Sjowmalf

where did you download it from? when i try to download it from the site it stops about half way

  • @theoneandonlyandyman well, from the website...

I guess you could try torrenting it since it's not a big deal while it's still free

  • Kurt, if you de-orbit so the green circle is on the purple one, you actually will land on the pad.

  • honestly my favorite series on youtube right now, i love you kurt :D

  • I think boosting up, perpendicular to the equator and tangential to the planet surface, will turn the orbit up for the next 180° and down for the previous half, with the equator as reference, and boosting down would cause the inverse... But that's just my intuition after watching his first test.

So I think he didn't aim his second boost correctly. He aimed down instead of up, when he wanted to turn the next half up.

  • KURT TO GO TO THE MOON JUST BURN AT AN ALTITUDE OF 100 KM WHEN THE MOON IS RISING UNTIL YOUR ORBIT INTERSECTS THE MOONS!

  • @123arianagrandefan CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL.

  • @FalconFetus8 youre funny

  • @FalconFetus8

THIS IS THE ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE!

  • @123arianagrandefan you do know you don't point the spacecraft to where the moon is currently. you point to where it is going to be when you get there. other wise you will miss it.

  • shot in the dark, but i think the hardest part about going to the mun will being getting your orbit to line up with it's

  • Space flight trial and error! Jebediah at his finest!

  • @kurtjmac When you do your countdowns on KSP Its T- Not just the number.

  • @jgood56 that's a NASA thing this is KSP on the planet Kerben. With Kurt being the Director of Operations.

  • lol making up words and making that's what she said jokes. 2 things i never expected from kurt

  • Kurt, don't worry about overheating SRBs. They burn out before they overheat.

  • @MrJacksley Not exactly true, if you have to many of them together, they can overheat and explode. But generally, they dont explode.
